Yes Ben won his 10th game of the season vs. 0 losses today. If you take the 2011 season of 9 wins 1 loss and 1 save with this season record of 10-0 that's a 19-1-1 record. Not too bad for a kid who some say doesn't throw hard enough or doesn't have the correct body of a pitcher.

 

Seem strange that some forget he is from a family of rather outstanding College athletes and I am not at all including his brother Luke but his Father and Grandfather. You would think that one D1 College would take a chance on him, just for that family history of his....

19 career wins puts him tied for #2 on the career wins list behind Rob Harmon who has 23.

I try very hard to be fair to both teams in keeping score for CovCath at each game.

 

When in doubt I try to make a reasonable choice based on what effort a player had to make in trying to make a play and sometimes, if there is a person near me I trust, I will ask them for their opinion.

 

In the game yesterday Ben Maile in the 1st inning hit a fly ball to what I would call left center. The CF was playing and rightfully so, that Ben was going to pull the ball to RF. The wind was blowing at the time from Right to Left and at a brisk pace.

 

I will not say who was sitting/standing by me in the Home teams bullpen at the time, other than to say, it is closed off to the general public and two of the three people, were not CovCath fans.

 

Now I called it a hit and my reasoning was the distance the CF had to travel to even get to the ball and the fact that the ball due to Maile swing and the wind, was pushing the ball away for the CF as he ran to it.

 

Now indeed the young man did get his glove on the ball but just couldn't bring it in for the out. The HC CF is a rather good player and I have seen him make a lot of catches over the years but again to me, it wasn't what I would call a routine play and in fact if he had caught the ball, it would have been a very, very good play.

 

Now as I said, I asked the three people who were in the bullpen and they all agreed with me that it was a hit. I know that CovCath Radio gave him a hit but in today's paper Richard Skinner gave the CF an error.

 

Please again and only if you were at the game, what was your call? I honestly would like to hear what you thought of the play!

Since you are not getting alot of responses here I have to weigh in because I have been asked this before and this is my opinion.

 

I would score it as an error and I will tell you why.

Cheating out of position is the key here, this is a coaches or players decision and once you do this you sorta are giving up, well position. So, if a player is playing the position straight up, then a ball to either right center or left center could be construed as routine, so score it an error.

The wind theory is part of the game imo, I am assuming Maile is left handed hitter?, if so and the wind is blowing right to left, what the heck is the cf doing cheating to right center? Again, coaching or player error, score it an error.

And with all of this said, the other key here is the cf got a glove on it so that supports the whole play the kid straight up and not cheat and he catches it without question.

If he doesnt touch the ball and he is playing out of position and cheating then the argument for a base hit is pretty solid and it goes down as a hit and the either the player or the coach is charged with a mental error. JMO.

 

And all of this just based on your description. Had I seen the play in person, I may change my mind entirely. :thumb:

^ TOG - I wasn't at the game and with your description above I don't think I need to have seen the play to say that is an error. Unless the CF had to dive for the ball, if a fielder is running to make a catch and it hits the pocket of his glove but isn't caught, that is an error if I am scoring. Sorry for offering an opinion without seeing the play.
