ColonelCrazy Posted January 5, 2006 Posted January 5, 2006 Beechwood led by 2 at half. Beechwood committed 24 turnovers. Chas Moore for the Tigers led all scorers with 20. Michael Romes had 11 last time I heard, mostly from the free throw line. I'll admit that I'm a bit surprised how close this one was. Timmy Tierney did play for the Colonels, and added 7 points. Sounded like CCH killed Beechwood on the boards in the 1st half... Ugly game, from what I could tell with lots of fouls and turnovers...
NEERFAN Posted January 5, 2006 Posted January 5, 2006 Closer than I expected, hard to believe they kept it so close if they turned it over that many times.
ColonelCrazy Posted January 5, 2006 Author Posted January 5, 2006 Both teams had 10 turnovers at the half...CCH ended up with 13, I think
gold sunrise Posted January 5, 2006 Posted January 5, 2006 Keeping my eye on Beechwood..look for them to make some noise in the 9th.
ColonelCrazy Posted January 5, 2006 Author Posted January 5, 2006 Keeping my eye on Beechwood..look for them to make some noise in the 9th. They may be able to knock one of the "big boys" off; unfortunately for them, they are in the toughest district in the 9th and one of the toughest in the state, with Holmes, Holy Cross & Covington Catholic. It should be an interesting district tournament...
Theoldguy Posted January 5, 2006 Posted January 5, 2006 In a less than stellar performance tonight, CovCath beat a Beechwood team who (IMO) outplayed the Colonels. If it weren’t for CovCath deep bench and better skills, the Colonels would have taken an L in their first 35th district Basketball game at CovCath. I believe that playing down in the 5/3 Lexington Classic hurt the Colonels tonight as in Lexington the Referees let the teams play, while tonight looking at a player caused the officials to blow their whistles. Beechwood just seemed to want this game more tonight than the Colonels and if you remember what I said a couple of day’s ago this was a big concern. Give credit to the Tigers, they came to play and played their hearts out, but they just don’t have the numbers. I hope CovCath learned a lesson tonight that just because CovCath is written on their uniform, it doesn’t mean the opponents are going to roll over and play dead. If I were Coach Listerman, the Colonels would be at CovCath gym at 6am tomorrow morning and shooting free throws, as they missed far too many of them in the last couple of minutes and allowed Beechwood to stay in the game when the Colonels should have put the Tigers away. Give Beechwood credit, they played I think as well as they could but still came up short. They will be a force in the All “A” in the Ninth Region. If the officials call the same kind of game Friday when CovCath and HHS play, neither team might be able to send five players onto the floor in the second half.
cshs81 Posted January 5, 2006 Posted January 5, 2006 Let me compliment the Tigers. For basically playing 6 boys, they hung in there and battled. They're a pretty athletic bunch and actually they do well more for that than they do basketball skill. The Moore kid was the best pure athlete on the floor and I'm betting the vast majority of his 20 pts were layups. Many times, he released on the CCH shot and beat everyone down the floor. Their challenge is at the PG position. They really struggle against pressure as indicated by the large amount of turnovers. Duran Jefferson will kill Beechwood with steals. I like the effort and scrappiness of the Tigers. They're limited offensively but they battle and make up for any lack of talent they may have. Fun team to watch.
cshs81 Posted January 5, 2006 Posted January 5, 2006 BTW, I saw nothing tonight that indicates CCH is ready to challenge Holmes.
cshs81 Posted January 5, 2006 Posted January 5, 2006 Sidenote: I got to see the Lampl kid that just came to CCH in the JV game. He looks like a solid player. He's athletic and aggressive with the ball going to the hole. No clue as to why he's not at Ryle but CCH will gladly take him. He will contribute.
Champs05 Posted January 5, 2006 Posted January 5, 2006 I thought that the Cov Cath Student section was very well behaved tonight with the way they treated Michael. Romes didnt have the greatest game, but his former classmates were not all over him as i suspected. Nice Job guys, way to show colonel pride, and class. Good showing too considering the Rose Bowl being at 8

Good showing too considering the Rose Bowl being at 8 Yes the students showed why they are the class of the Commonwealth when it comes to students cheering. My only complaint tonight is the PEP BAND...Get rid of them, as I think they take away from the boys cheering. BTW the CCH boy's did an outstanding job of singing the National Athem prior to the start of the game. Wasn't that 1st team all region place kicker Tony Roch in the group? Great job men......

Crossbar Posted January 5, 2006 Posted January 5, 2006 The boys don't like the band either. It's a point that other schools with bands are poked fun at when the section cheers "our band's better", but if there is a band... that cheer is taken away. Good section tonight with the Rose Bowl.
Crossbar Posted January 5, 2006 Posted January 5, 2006 CCH did a great job containing Romes. No FGs in the first half?? How many other teams hold him to that this year... or last year? He ended up with something around 11 points when i left the game around 3 mins left to watch the Rose Bowl. Good job rebounding by the Colonels, which is where this game was kept close with bad shooting by CCH in the first half IMO.

Whats up with the Student section leaving the game in mass with over two minutes left. The fat lady hadn't quite yet sang her song. Also why don't the guy's sing "You lost that loving feeling" anymore. I know its old hat but I love it. And finally get the girls, even if you don't let them sit with you any more (they did years ago), to stand up and cheer. While they might look beautiful sitting there, there is nothing better in life than meeting that girl who understands sports and cheers her little old heart out while she tells you about the other teams point guard not being able to dribble to his left, or the pro and cons of using a zone. BTW if you meet that girl, marrry her, I did years and years ago
