Instead I listen to sports talk with a bunch of bickering and news of the weird.

I know a lot of people genuinely struggle to ever be able to appreciate "classical" music...but I'm very gladly not one of them. Sure, I'm not always jonesing to listen to things like this, or Fauré's In Paradisum, or Satie's Gymnopédie...but I'm always glad they're there when I do want to listen to them.

I'm right there with you. When I was a young boy, one of our school trips was to see the Pittsburgh Philharmonic Orchestra downtown. It was awesome. I highly recommend it and have enjoyed classical music ever since.

^ When I was in grade school they took us every year to see Peter and the Wolf; Baltimore Symphony, as it was very instructional for youngsters.

Yep, here in EKY, they take you down to the Piggly Wiggly and listen to Billy Jack pick the banjo, and his cousin Earl blow in a whiskey jug.

Not that there's anything wrong with that!!

They had motorized transportation back then? :D

For those of you who have never seen the symphony, a Broadway musical, an opera, etc., do yourselves a favor, put it on your bucket list and follow through. I can almost guarantee you won't be sorry.

Doc is a youngster; no problem for him.

Horse and buggy for me...

I'm editing this quote from Dennis Miller so as to comply with BGP rules:

I think that 95 percent of what passes for art in this world is complete and utter poop. And 4 of the other 5 percent is poop with an asterisk.

But oh, that 1 percent makes you proud to be a human, doesn't it?

I couldn't agree more.

And for what it's worth, there's a GREAT one being performed this Friday night at Cincinnati Music Hall. They're performing Verdi's Stabat Mater and Orff's Carmina Burana to open up the May Festival. That means you'll get to see the entire Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra playing with the +/- 100 member May Festival Chorus singing along. I saw it as a 13 year old and it still stands as one of the most amazing musical performances I've ever seen...all around. Here's the famous "O Fortuna" movement. It's recognizable from probably a couple dozen movies.\

Couldn't agree more. In fact I would say go see one of each type. They all effect you differently and you never know which one you might love. I would have never believed at 20 that I would love opera, but I do.

Thanks for the link. Definitely one of those 1-percenters.

I went to a Broadway (touring) play for the first time, last year. There's nothing like it -- and the richness and texture of a live orchastra is half of the enjoyment.
