Not to be a killjoy...but biblically speaking, wouldn't mowing the lawn on the Sabbath be a sin?

Sunday afternoon after mowing in this heat at end of school year, do not assume I have a functioning brain. :-)

My parents had rules when I was growing up. Irrelevant whether I agreed or disagreed, they were the rules.

God, who knows a lot more than my functioning brain can comprehend, has decided sins. It's His game and he gets to make the rules.

He knows what works best for the creatures He created. While my human pride and ego likes to creep in my mind and hint I would know better my life experiences have shown me that God knows better.

Once I have decided to follow His Son, than I chose to struggle to follow the life He laid out for me and stay away from sinning.

BUT I will knowingly fail miserably and I pray that Jesus sacrifice for me and you will be enough to cover my sins.

Couldn't agree more. :thumb:

Neither of you two intelligent people can answer the question? Are there things in the Bible that are listed as sins that you think are not sins?

Let me re-phrase then.

What listed sins do you guys know are sins yet you violate them the most?

"God, who knows a lot more than my functioning brain can comprehend, has decided sins. It's His game and he gets to make the rules."

I thought this statement did answer the question quite well. I don't get to decide what is sinful & what isn't sinful. So I guess the answer to your first question is no.

As to the other question, there are numerous sins I commit, but I would guess the primary vice of mine is temper/anger-related issues. There are (unfortunately) a lot of them I struggle with, but I'd say that one's at the top.

If it is listed in the Bible as a sin than it is a sin.

Just my two cents, but I thought that LBBC answered rather well. "Sin" to him (and me) is based on biblical teachings. It seems odd to answer "what sins do you not think are sins?" That's like asking "which prime numbers do you not think are prime?"

I'd also think that is quite a different question than "what sins do you violate the most?" I think that when I sin, I fully know that it is sin.

I will use this next time I have to mow yard on a Sunday! :-)

Here is how I would reply to this if it were one of my students.

Have to or choose to? :D

You joke about it...but it is a sin to work in the Sabbath according to the Bible. Is it not? How do you justify that sin?

Jesus' disciples picked wheat, I think it was, from a field when they needed to eat.

They tried to say Jesus was having them sin by allowing it.

He questioned "would you leave your ox to die in a ditch because it is the Sabbath?". He said you wouldn't and thus released His followers from that OT rule.

So this one is OK because Jesus said so. But Jesus also said that we weren't to judge....

Finish the Scripture of what Jesus said.

So how is mowing your yard a life or death situation?

Are you saying that Jesus changed the Ten commandments too the Nine commandments?

If the Sabbath is only old testament law,why did cities like Lexington have blue laws setup until the late 1980s?

Jesus actually elevated the Ten Commandments when he referenced them. He didn't necessarily cancel them out, but he raised the bar with each of them. It wasn't about the act of murder, but the hatred in the heart that leads to it. Nor was it about the act of adultery, but rather the lust in the heart that leads to it.

With the Sabbath, in the Old Testament that was a day you set aside to honor & remember God. In the New Testament, every day is a day you honor God. Additionally, the first day of the week begins to take precedent in the New Testament. Old Testament Jews rested on the seventh day in honor of a finished creation...New Testament Christians worship on the first day of the week to honor a finished redemption.

The blue laws you speak of are the choices of specific cities and/or counties.

Colossians 2: 16-17 gives a great deal of freedom to the believer, including how the Sabbath is observed.
