March 26, 201214 yr I told you guys 2 years ago he had zero killer instinct... Yes you did. While I hated for UK to once again face UNC, Barnes was not the reason. Same here. Dadgummit, ol Roy apparently didn't recognize it. I asked Williams what impact the triangle-and-two had on his team. His answer was stunning. “I know they did for one possession, and they may have for another possession,” Williams said. “I’m not sure about that.” Williams clearly was unsure because from press row it looked like the Jayhawks played the triangle-and-two for nearly half of the final 20 minutes. The Jayhawks confirmed that they played the combo defense for the final eight or nine minutes. March 26, 201214 yr Maybe this is a topic for another thread, but is North Carolina the most under performing program in NCAA history? Looking at talent, I would say no one has had as much talent over the years, especially the last 40, as UNC. I know they have won a few titles but it seems like they should have won so many more with all the talent. This year is another example of talent under performing.

From Dean Smith, Bill Guthredge, Matt Doherty to now no team has won less (titles) with more talent than UNC. Roy could care less about defense so no wonder he had no idea what was going on.

March 26, 201214 yr Here's the other problem, particularly for whatever NBA team drafts Barnes. It's possible that the reason why he didn't improve is that there just isn't much ceiling left. Barnes has no first step, he doesn't have a particularly great feel for the game, especially in the half court, and he doesn't play much defense. I guess he's technically a good rebounder for his size, but he's rarely showed sustained effort on the boards. He'll probably settle somewhere between Arron Afflalo and Jared Dudley, but definitely not much more than that. Carolina's other all-purpose super-recruit, Marvin Williams, had some of the same problems. He would show flashes in pretty much every part of his game, but could never find the one thing he could do to consistently affect the play on the court. Barnes is a much, much better shooter than Marvin was, but he's not the same level of athlete. It's just difficult to see where Barnes would really fit in an NBA roster — he'll shoot well from beyond the arc, but do you really want to spend a top-five pick on a jump shooter who couldn't get to the rim in college?
March 26, 201214 yr Here was the thing about Barnes that raised the red flag for me back in his AAU days. There was a huge Nike event in Atlanta on Memorial Day Weekend and at the time Barnes was the consensus #1 guy. Obviously all of the other elite guys in the class like Brandon Knight, Josh Selby, Will Barton, Terrence Jones and Tobias Harris had that target on him to make a statement about how good they were compared to #1. Not once in that 4 day event did Barnes play to the level of anyone that was challenging him. Those guys were going HARD and Barnes was just coasting. Never a good sign, and told me all I needed to know about his mentality...
