  1. I believe you are right and I think he got a deal just like Umberg.

And as SpecialK stated who seems to be very very close to the situation makes mention of a “Comprehensive Plan of Action”

BW maybe has finally realized that this is it and he is not going to let anyone on his coaching staff take him down. If he is going down it’s going to be all his fault and all on his own.

Maybe he read my earlier post about “make no excuses” tantrum and realizes Iam right.

Let’s put it this way, I know for a fact that every coach under his command has been either demoted and replaced by someone else and everybody knew it but the coach he was replacing. He is a master of text and email firings.

That’s not how you build leadership skills and command respect from your coaches and players.

This is a train wreck that is barreling down the tracks out of control and I just can’t look away...so sorry I’m back at it.

Just get out of the way. Nothing you can do! Highlands plays CovCath in basketball on sat.

  2. Red Dog started his career in Ohio and then moved to Lloyd where he won a state title in 1976. From that gig he moved to Simon Kenton and was there for maybe 5 years. He came to Highlands to be an assistant coach under Jack Eicher, then Tom Duffy and lastly Dale Mueller.

He did not come to Highlands for any family relations. Kremer graduated in 1983 after playing on back to back state champ teams in 1981 and 1982.

Those were two really good Highlands teams.

  3. It gets to the point that enough is enough. 24 pages of bashing. Schedule a meeting with him and his boss which I’m sure none of you have ever approached him with your concerns or ever will. I would think as loyal, passionate alumni you would want to get the facts straight from the coach. But, meeting with him and being told the true facts wont be as fun as the gossip, I’m sure. If you have discussed your concerns directly with him, then I apologize.

For the record, unless you’re in the locker room, on the field, on the sideline, in the coach’s office, in the film sessions, interacting with players’ teachers etc, you have no idea what truly happens or what goes into every decision!

I was talking with a parent of a current player who was raving about Coach Weinrich (not BW) and how much their son loves him & how hard the workouts are going. I guess in the end, there are many kids who want to play football and are playing. I’m sure one of you will say it’s because they have to play, but seriously, 80 kids have to play? No, it’s because they want to play!

And, I was talking with someone today who confirmed that he is involved with the Jr league. He was at their most recent board meeting because he was asked to attend to give his thoughts on a few items, he has met with their coaches, participated in their safety training, invites the middle school team to have dinner & pre game with the high school team, attends games as his schedules allows, and provides access to their staff for clinics.

Well everything that you are stating about Jr Football league maybe true now but it took 5 years for him to get involved.

To me and a lot of others, he’s 5 yrs late.

  4. 23 pages of venting and I’m done.

As stated earlier, let’s talk about this again either in the first week of November or better yet in December after Highlands has won the State Championship. I will be the first one on here either way, you can count on it.

Until then, I hope the right people read these comments and use them as motivation to themselves and to their players to prove all the na sayers wrong.

Use it as a tool and don’t complain that there are people calling for your job and questioning your ability to lead this program. Don’t complain that your schedule is too hard, don’t complain that nobody is in the stands, don’t complain that the School Board is making your job hard, don’t complain that you can’t practice indoors, don’t complain that you are in the wrong classification, don’t complain that people are using social media making comments that bother you and for Gods sake don’t complain that you have no talent.

Just do your job, don’t be afraid to ask for help, don’t be afraid to admit that you are wrong, don’t be afraid to make mistakes, don’t be afraid to get involved with Jr Football, don’t be afraid to talk to parents and alumni. Don’t be afraid to find a way to right the ship and for Gods sake don’t be afraid to change your philosophy.

    GO BIRDS!!!

Well there you have it. Well said SB.

  5. Not at all, and I didn't mean to imply that parents choose Religious based schools strictly for the religion based education. My point was, that is one of the key differentiators between public and religious schools, and it's something that public schools cannot provide. For some, that's the deciding factor. For others it's the more rigid structure. Obviously, we all know sports can be a reason why kids choose any one school over the other, and that you don't have to be Catholic (or even religious) to go to a school like Cov Cath, or NewCath. Perhaps a better point to make, is that while Highlands is still a great school academically (arguably the best, and certainly in the argument for being the best), other schools have improved as well, and while not on the same level, they still can provide excellent education. And with other schools having improved athletically, perhaps more are choosing to stay where they are at, rather than making a jump to Highlands, like many did even a decade ago. I remember watching Highlands in the years prior to and right after Towles, and those teams were phycally impressive....not huge but decent size, very fast, and very deep. When I saw Highlands this year, quite honestly, physically, they looked like almost every other team in NKY, and I watched a young Scott team give them fits for 1 half of football without their best player. That wouldn't have happened 15 years ago...that would have been a 70-0 game. But Scott is a public school team in NKY that has improved in all areas. SK is another that has greatly improved over the last decade and a half. There are less reasons for people to jump to, or even stay at Highlands both athletically and academically these days.

This could be said for almost everyone that has watched Highlands over the years. Highlands was the leader of the pack back then. Goes all the way back to Homer Rice when Highlands started winning recognized state championships. Rice's teaching, training and implementing of the game of football was heads above everyone else. That continued with every head coach at Highlands throughout the years until a coach didn't keep the program ahead of the pack and others caught up. Changes were made. Dale took it to a whole new level as his results speak for themselves. He used to yearly have other coaches from both high school and college programs come to Highlands to see what all the fuss was and how and why was he so successful. These coaches used to laugh at the weight facilities at Highlands. They were, lets say less than par. Dale kept Highlands ahead of the pack by his knowledge, teaching, and you know what, his mind games he used to play against anyone who would listen. How many times over the years did you hear Dale say, "fastest, greatest, strongest, smartest, best looking", ........add adjective here and he said it. He made it a point to let everyone in NKY, Ky., and the Tri-State know about his teams. That was one of his ways of keeping ahead of the competition. There was even a little ceremony when he was inducted to the Hall of Fame that, well was a motivator for the years to come for Dale. Lol!

So here we are. Season 7 and still looking for reasons on why BW should stay. What has he done to keep Highlands ahead of the competition? I'm sure there may be something but for the life of me, I can't think of any at the moment. I know he has been given access to incredible indoor facilities for one. And FTIS continue to attract top students academically so numbers shouldn't be down. FTIS also has had it's largest boom in class size the past few years as well. So whats up?

You know, sometimes things become stagnant and a change is needed. Why is that such a big deal?

  6. Early in the thread, a questioned was asked "why would BW even want to coach Highlands at this point?" Not sure anyone answered that. I guess the question needs to be what are the reasons for keeping BW as head coach? 98.3% of people will respond with the easy answer of he guided Highlands to a state title in 2014. Ok, so when does a state title start to lose any weight in the reason he is retained?

    #makethechange

  7. So from what I’m hearing and gathering, there is not going to be a coaching change due to no money or positions available in the FTIS.

If a new coach was to be hired, he/she would have to do something in the district whether pushing a broom or teaching or changing light bulbs. But the is no money available in the FTIS.

So with the fact there is no money or open positions, looks like it’s same ole same ole.

Looking forward to @HighlandsFB tweet in Aug about how Highlands is ranked 2nd, err 3rd, err 4th in country in wins and 1st, err 2nd, err 3rd in Ky in wins. Let’s hang our hat on that one!

  8. Sounds like coaching is the problem if they are one of the best as freshmen but not when they are seniors.

To be fair, some kids are not continuing to play football or even stay at Highlands after freshmen year. Now reasons behind them choosing to do so are many but coaching has contributed to those reasons.

I, like many others, just feel like it’s time. It has happened in other sports at Highlands over the last 10 or so years, and yes over wins/loses and disconnect with players and community.

  9. First time seeing the Birds this year and they were impressive. Sam Vinson is the real deal and saw the Norse in the house to watch. Bush play by Newport at end of game and Highlands coaches were not happy about it.

Yeah, mentioned on radio about Listerman being livid about something. But they never said what.

  10. I’m basing the “bigger jobs” off the criteria of:

    1) Tradition/Talent

    2) Legit chance to compete for a region title and beyond year in, year out

    3) Facitlities/Resources

Thinking the last few years- the top:

    Highlands

    Bowling Green

    CovCath

    I’d also throw in:

    Hopkinsville

    McCracken

    Owensboro Catholic

    Hazard (this year)

    Paducah Tilghman

Corbin came open 6 or so years ago, but it had been 15+ years or so since it had came open. Reason for that, too.

Not many. The truly good ones don’t come open very often, and there is a reason for that (namely the numbers listed in my criteria), and if they do- a good amount of time they are in house hires (“If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”- see BG, Highlands, O’Cath.”

Not a lot of coaches jumping from head job to job in this day & time, few and far between really. Even fewer worth packing up and moving your family for.

Highlands is broke and needs fixing.
