  1. That spin move was nasty. Belfry showing their own accumen on creative 2-pt playcalls.
  2. All the Belfry player had to do was tackle him, and it seemed he was going for the ball. Nice play call on the 2-pt conversion.
  3. Fun game to watch. Tale of two halves. Who would have thought a FG was all BW would get in the 2nd half to seal the game. Between last year and this year, you couldln't pick two teams that are more even than these two. Congrats to both teams on stellar seasons.
  4. I didn't go back and re-watch the game, but my suspicion was that the Mayfield D was overly focused on Hergott and that left wider lanes for Berger. It seemed to be "pick your poison" at that point though. If Mayfield would have started focusing on Berger then Hergott would have ran wild. These losses are much easier to stomach knowing the better team won. 2A title game gonna be a dandy.
  5. It was another fun season watching Mayfield. Not many fans get to watch their team make the final four almost every year, so I feel very fortunate. Beechwood simply controlled the line of scrimmage. Offensively, Berger had at least 5? runs where he wasn't touched until 20 yards down the field. There really wasn't much need to throw the ball, save for a few third downs. Defensively, Beechwood stopped the Mayfield run game without ever having to commit even 7 men in the box (it seemed like), which in turn didn't open up the pass game for Mayfield. I don't think the score is indicative of how good the Mayfield defense was. Mayfield offense kept shooting themselves in the foot with penalties and turnovers, constantly putting the defense in tough positions. Can't get away with that against teams like Beechwood. It was also clear that, while the Mayfield QB did make significant strides this year, he wasn't quite ready for that big of a stage. Hats off to Beechwood. They have a tremedous team this year, and were just better than Mayfield in all phases. As far as the Beechwood defense being the best high school defense they had ever seen? Not even close. This was the least talented Mayfield team that Beechwood has ever played (I would think most BW posters would agree), so I don't think we saw anything Friday night to sway any opinion we might have had prior to kickoff. I commented on a previous post that having a QB like Hergott can mask many flaws a team might have, because he is so talented. I would say that logic applies here, and Hergott makes the entire team (defense included) much better than they would be without him at the helm. Good luck next week to all those teams still playing!
  6. Beechwood has the upper hand, regardless of game location, simply because they have the most dangerous player. I'm ready to see what Mayfield's defensive gameplan will be. They are going to have to do a great job of mixing it up to keep Hergott off balance as much as possible. It would appear he prefers to run the ball over throwing it. Hopefully Mayfield can keep him somwhat contained and make him win with his arm. A tall task no doubt, but possible. Offensively, Mayfield needs to do what they've been doing. Lean on that run game with Galbreath and Starks, while mixing in some downfield shots (hopefully for touchdowns). The best way to contain Hergott is to keep him on the sideline as much as possible. I have been critical of this years Mayfield team, as far as title contention goes. But they are a tough, gritty bunch and seem to be playing at a high level right now. Mayfield and Beechwood have always matched up pretty evenly size and speed wise, and this year is no different. It's hard to believe Mayfield has managed to win all 8 games between these two, given the caliber of Beechwood's program. My head says Beechwood, my heart says Mayfield. Go Cards.
  7. Anyone looking at this matchup objectively is gonna pick Mayfield. Does that mean Green County can't pull out a win? Absolutely not. The only team to beat Mayfield was run-oriented. That alone should give Green County some confidence. The biggest swaying factor, as you pointed out, is the scheduling. Green County wins 4 or 5 games if they play Mayfield's schedule, IMO. Does that matter to either team playing Friday night? NO. Everyone's record is 0-0.
  8. Starks has more breakaway speed than Galbreath, but Galbreath has much better agility and tackle breaking ability is smaller space, hardly EVER gets brought down by one tackler. Starks can break tackles, but he needs more room to build momentum. Maybe in the future Starks will get more run at RB, but right now that would be silly with a senior already performing as well as Galbreath has. The coaching staff seems to have found the right combo, with Galbreath getting around 70% of the touches and Starks at 30%. I really like Starks as a late game RB, where the defense will be tired and he is fresh from only playing one way. I like Starks staying at DE. I don't think Mayfield will find anyone to play that position as well as him, and Mayfield tends to have players athletic enough to fill in and play LB, not so much at DE. I also think he can pretty much lock up one side of the field playing DE.
  9. I would definitely classify this as a trap game for Mayfield. I think if you look at the result of the 2 Murray games, we can more or less say that Mayfield didn't come ready to play in the regular season matchup. I did see Mayfield implode a little in that first game mentally, they couldn't get any stops on defense and it kept them from building any momentum and you could see the frustration. Green County has seen the keepaway recipe work so they know how to beat Mayfield. We will just see if they can execute. If Mayfield shows up unfocused and worried about next week, then Green County has the potential to upset the redbirds.
  10. Looking at Green County schedule, not really sure where to find a quality win. Taylor County appears to be it, but Taylor County doesn't really have a signature win either. They got beat by 11 by Glasgow, and that looks like their toughest opponent. IF Mayfield plays as well as they did last week, I don't think this will be much of a game. A one-dimensional running team plays right into Mayfield's strength. Will Green County be able to run it up the gut like Murray did in their win over Mayfield?? Murray never could get the edge on Mayfield in either game, so I don't Green County being able to accomplish that. I'm hoping to see Mayfield continue to work on the passing game. If they win Friday night, I think they will have to throw the ball more than they want to pull out another win. #4 RB for Mayfield is the best all around back. #24 is talented, but not as laterally agile as his counterpart. He does have some breakaway speed #4 doesn't possess, so I like how they are getting him more carries in the Murray game. However, he is Mayfield's best defender and playing him too much as RB will diminish his effectiveness on the defensive side of the ball.
  11. Murray couldn’t get anything going offensively. Maybe less than 100 yards of total offense?? And no team is going to win a game turning the ball over the way Murray did. Mayfield run game was churning, and the quarterback continues to stretch the field and hit on some deep passes. I never saw the game playing out like that, even if I thought Mayfield didn’t play well in the regular season game. Big confidence boost for Mayfield moving forward. They looked great on both sides of the ball.
  12. These conditions favor Murray for sure. But both teams have to deal with it. It can't be an excuse. As far as Joe Morris swaying the refs, you think Mayfield gets calls because he has a collection of state championship rings? I had no clue the refs called Mayfield games with so much underlying biases.
  13. Based on how the last 3 contests have gone between these two teams, its hard to pick a winner. Either way, I see a one score game, with a similar score to last game with both teams in the 20's. Gonna be a good one!
  14. For starters, Murray seems to have more talent on their roster the past 2 or 3 years than they've had in quite a while. Secondly, as previously mentioned, their offensive philosophy allows them to shorten the game and maintain control of the clock, which keeps them competitive with more talented teams. Lastly, its obvious the new coach is good at what he does, and he seems to have unified the team and has them believing in each other.
  15. I agree last year Murray was the better team. This year Mayfield just didn't grab the bull by the horns. In the past, they've had alphas that would have gone up and gotten both of those potential touchdown passes, or would have had better ball security late in the 4th quarter when all they needed was a couple first downs to bleed the clock. That is why I haven't classified them as championship caliber. No alphas and no killer instinct.
  16. There are level headed Mayfield fans on here. We just aren't as loud 🤐 Murray executed better than Mayfield last week, and that's all there is to it. Don't know the exact count, but Murray won the time of possession battle easily. Mayfield defense was fatigued in the second half and just couldn't come up with stops. Did Mayfield have a chance to make plays and win the game? Absolutely. Missed on two deep TD passes, and had the fumble at the end that gave the ball back to Murray. Seems like Murray's style of play just matches up well with Mayfield. The Cards are used to playing spread teams. Playing defense against Murray requires assignment football, and Mayfield didn't play disciplined enough to win. Maybe this will be a wakeup call for them. If these two teams manage to meet up again, it will be interesting to see what Mayfield's defensive strategy will be. They stayed in a 4 man front the entire game, I'm guessing to limit the big play outside, and instead were beat to death up the middle.
  17. Murray converted quite a few 4th and short scenarios throughout the game. Mayfield didn’t have an answer for the fullback dive most of the second half. Cards also missed two deep passes (potential touchdowns) that they have been hitting in most games. Give Murray credit for beating mayfield how no One thought they could, grind it out game without many big plays. Just kept Mayfield D off balance. And Murray holding Mayfield to 21 was unthinkable before tonight. Gonna be fun seeing how this region shakes out come playoff time. P.S. I’m glad we can be done with the whole RPI and will Beechwood stay at 2 or will Mayfield pass them convo. Look, didn’t even matter.
  18. Mayfield scored on their first offensive possession. Their next three scores were a pick six, punt return for TD, and another pick six. Backups played 2.5 quarters. Mayfield running up the score would have been putting up 100. I promise, Ballard really is that bad.
  19. Murray will need to pull out all the stops to come away with a win this friday night. They don't really have a signature win, and they dropped the game last week to Caldwell, who Mayfield easily took care of while playing their sloppiest game of the year. Murray pass game will dictate if they can be competitive in this game. I don't see them breaking alot of long touchdown runs the way Mayfield controls the line of scrimmage.
  20. I have a hard time with Graves. I want to see them successful, but typically they beat who they should, and don't seem to win many games as the underdog. I need to see them beat some teams that they "shouldn't" beat before I see them going far and making some noise in the post season. They had a shot with Mayfield, but really could only muster a quarter and a half of fight and that was it. I can't speak to the Bullit East win. Both teams appeared to be even, so I woudn't have considered Graves an underdog in that game. Tonight will be their last chance to gain some confidence and momentum, because Muhlenburg and Marshall will be cake walks. Good Luck to the Eagles.
  21. I think UK playing offense they way they do is two fold. Yes, Stoops is offensively conservative by nature, but that's also what has allowed UK to climb out of the cellar and be consistently competitive. I don't think a high volume passing attack was going to help the Cats win games. We all know what happens to spread teams that have a bad offensive game. A lot of three and outs, and too much pressure on the defense. Running the ball also chews the clock and gives the defense a break. As previously mentioned above, UK also hasn't had the players to pass well, until this year. Hopefully recruits see how explosive and successful WRs can be at UK without passing the ball more than half the time.
  22. Mayfield scored and missed extra point, then forces a safety on Caldwell to go up 8-0. They fumble the ensuing kickoff and that’s where Caldwell took the momentum. Multiple turnovers for Mayfield, and too many penalties…
  23. I wouldn't etch anything in stone. Beechwood opponents seem to keep winning. Mayfield opponents seem to keep losing. I have a feeling Beechwood passes them in the RPI, but who knows.
