I would have to agree that Gene Combs is a great coach. For what he's done at a small school that didnt have much success since the 80's has been phenomenal.

Most underrated players in the 14th region?

I dont think Clinton Dixon or Cody Berryman from Estill get the recognition that they deserve. I guess since they're the new kids in town!! -

This should be one of the better post seasons in many years!! Every teams hopes should be really high since most have a legitimate shot at making a run for the 14th crown. -

The legend is 50 years old!! This was a great great story & a bunch of dedicated young men!! -
players get mad & talk of quitting but change there mind. It will be interesting to see if his "possible" decision sticks??

There are no rules regarding attending schools or transferring?? I was not aware that there was no rules on this topic. I must be confused about why several players have to sit out when transferring. i always thought it was a rules violation. i stand corrected!! can you please tell me why players are not allowed to go from school to school and sometimes have to sit for 1 year when they do?? please help me!!!

Leslie @ Breathitt Predictions

Lee should win -
This is understood but i'm simply stating that the rules for private & public are different! The KHSAA would not touch this issue with a 100 foot pole in fear of being sued. I simply feel that if you are under the KHSAA, you should follow the rules/guidelines set forth by the KHSAA. Private schools are an exception & this is allowed.
-
My point is this: Public high school have to deal with district lines or county lines. There have been many occasions that these rules have been broken & players have to sit or schools get in trouble. Private schools do not have to follow these same district line or county lines!! Is this legal?? yes!! Although it is legal, it is not the same rules or playing field for private & public schools!!
-
this is a great point. I do not know exactly how it operates but on this post I have heard they go get kids from their diocese. I was assuming that these were within conventional school districts but this may be incorrect as ARC has stated. if public schools are bound by these districts & private is not, there is an unfair balance. If you change a transfer request from "private" to "public" it should be legal. in most of these cases it is legal for private but illegal for public b/c of zoning/districting. If public has to operate under districting then private should as well instead of "recruiting" under the umbrella of the diocese!

Owsley just doesnt have a very good team. They have 2 really good players (neeley & smith) and 1 pretty good player in congleton but thats just 3. 3 players doesnt make a team. Owsley & wolfe have shown that good players cant beat good teams or even decent teams.
-
Has this happened before? Lee has beat Owsley & Estill 3 times. Will face owsley in district & then, if they win, possibly Estill in the finals. If they win both games, they would have played & beaten 2 district teams 4 times & getting 8 wins from those 2 teams. This is unheardof to me.

Sturring the pot?? He's a good kid! If he quit, someone will post that he did quit, i would hope.

14th region district rankings
Uk4Life replied to sportsazoid's topic in KY Boys Basketball (High School)
56th is decided!! #1 Lee vs. #4 Owsley #2 Estill vs. #3 Powell -
I dont think there will be a split from public and private but for the All "A", I would like to see the qualifying #'s for it reduced. Many schools have 2A footballl team and A basketball. The # needs to be reduced to 25% or 30% of the schools, 2A 25% or 30%, 3A 20-30% & 20-30% for 4A. 1. Get a # of participating schools 2. Divide that by 4. 3. this should help draw truer lines of how many should be in the A, 2A, 3A & 4A

This should be an exciting/entertaining game. The rumor mills have already started. neeley quitting??? smiths finger??? several players leaving the team???
-
I agree!! Daniel Neely is a great kid & competitor. Things are shaky in booneville so lets just wait and see what happens. Speculation will cause more trouble than there already is for the owls.

14th region district rankings

This is why you seed!!! Already the march madness has started in the 56th!! Lee could ultimately decide who they want to face in the 1st round. If they want to face Powell, they could tank the game. If they want Owsley, that would be harder! just win the game!! No blind draws!!! draws are crazy & why do you even play district games!! -
regarding: #1. Public schools do not get to choose or court players to their prospective schools. In the public school arena this is seen as recruiting (i.e. if a coach from Tates Creek tried to talk a player from say Beaumont Middle School to come to tates creek). Students can go but without the entisement from rival schools. also on #1. Catholic faith is an easy reason/excuse for transfers. If a kid going to say Boone County High School said, "I'm transferring to BB b/c i want to further my catholic faith & better my education." This would be a hard case for the KHSAA to refuse. Also, it is difficult for me to fathem that there are non-catholics going to catholic schools. #2. I would agree that some public schools in say Lexington, Louisville, Bowling Green and Ashland pay more for coaches because of their tax base but there are more than 100 other counties that do not have that luxury and choses are not give high salaries. I do not know the salaries but i would say that BB, OCC, Lex C, NCC all coaches salaries are much higher than most if not all coaching salary in the 13th, 14th, 15th or 16th region. #3 If you are a good player, you can be "chosen." If you dont know for sure, then you will more than likely be persuaded. Is it not legal to recruit your own kids?? What if that kid says i'm thinking of going to XXX?? Do you say ok or do you keep recruiting, which is legal since its your own kid?? what if this happened in the public setting?? #4 The playing field is not the same!! we both agree!!
-
Does this go for "ALL" private schools?? I did talk to a few lee fans about brossart. they said the coaches on the bench were not the same as those that came to scout in the regional. brossart had several coaches on the bench plus these "scouts" which they said were "freshman coach" was what they told the lee fan i talked to.

Private Schools do have an advantage: 1. They do get to "choose" some of the better players/students from several feeder programs. Most small schools get what they get & just hope they have enough year by year to field a freshman and jv team. Catholic Schools do not have this problem since they select each team each year. 2. Funding for coaching/equipment/etc. I've noticed private schools typically have large or larger coaching staffs than public schools. Many small schools only pay 2, 3 or 4 coaches at best. I've heard several small schools that only buy new uniforms every 3,4 or 5 years & do not buy their players shoes or equipment. I do not know about private schools but i'd imagine they have some "perks" 3. Open enrollment is not a factor as long as you are one of the "chosen"!! Also, parents of really really really good players always are looking out for their sons/daughters education and religious asperations. This also doesnt hurt on a transfer request!! 4. I dont think the schools should be seperated in the All A but the levels are not equal between public and private!!
