I hope you have proof and a basis for this. If true, it should be dealt with quickly and strongly. But on the surface, it looks like paranoia. I think some of the "Harlan" paranoia is being generated by County Administration. For instance, can anyone tell me if The County Superintendent really instructed the county coaches not to schedule Harlan any more for any sport in Middle School, or is that a rumor? Also, for my 2 cents again on the issue on where kids should go to school. It should be a parental decision, not the kids. Kids don't have the judgement they need to make this decision. Seems we have a couple folks on here whose mission it is to beat the anti Harlan drum. Hey, here is one for you. Where did James A Cawood's kids go to school. Answer: Harlan! Ask an old timer! One last thing Whyme is a perfect handle for you!

I agree mostly Waggle. We have some very good linemen, but they will have to play both sides of the ball, along with some younsters. RB and Recievers also will have to step up. As noles said, Donahue gets the most out of the talent he is given to work with. I also think Coach Shope will show that he is capable of building and maintaining a defense.

IMO, Jones won the second Harlan game, not necessarily by points scored but by threat. Prior to his return the Jumpers were fairly one dimensional, but Jones opened up the field, proving too much for the good Dragon D, not to mention just about everyone else. JOnes was a senior?

I guess so, but I could say that the County is having probs. living within their means as well. All I would hope for is independent thinking. Your post is the company line. Truth be told, my opinion is if I pay taxes and taxes support public education, I should have the choice of any public school I want being paid to educate my child. If I wanted to send my 12 year old to Wallins because its a great middle school, then to Harlan , because its a great high school, why shouldn't I be allowed to do so? Parents should be deciding this, not anyone else. But you are probably right that we will just have to agree to disagree.

I do think the state prefers districts to be able to work out these agreements. And they should work them out. I think the County Board wanted to put the issue behind them. I think to some administrators, Harlan Ind. has become a personal issue, clouding judgement. I think Farmer and most of the Board recognized this and acted in the best interest of all. But hey, my opinion only.

I disagree with respect. I think it was well thought out. But, I hesitate to debate it here on a football thread. Only thing I will say about it, is that very few additional students were added to Harlan. It just let Harlan get paid for the students they had plus a very few more. It helped Harlan financially, but it won't boost enrollment much. What it does for the county is put the issue behind them, makes them look more reasonable since they have contracts with every other system bordering Harlan County. Again remember the money for the students going to school at Harlan High, who lived in the county just sat in Frankfort, nobody got it without the contract. Harlan County didn't get it. Harlan High didn't get it. It just sat there or went to Henry Clay, Leslie County or who knows. The contract just released the funds. That way at least the money is spent in Harlan County, which benefits everybody. The 5 year relief it gives is 5 years for the County to open the new school, prove it is going to make education better, establish its sports teams, and remove some of the reasons folks want their kids at Harlan Ind. If they are successful, problem will take care of itself. Hey, I said I wouldn't comment a lot. Sorry guys.

Could you possibly be more paranoid? As far as falling on your face, I have no desire to see the new school fail. I have lots of county friends. They usually are able to discuss without being as hateful as your post here. As a matter of fact, as far as football goes, I don't see Harlan and Harlan County High competing. I could root for both I think, I'd have a class A and a 5A team. I think done right, the new school will better educate the young people, but getting it right is the key. If you don't want to comment on my question, fine, but you need to level your head before you post. You are correct that the County is the master of its own destiny. The paranoia about the devil City School Dwellers needs to stop. The School Board took a step in the right direction by signing a non-resident contract, although some tried to screw that up. Again, my question was about football. Thanks everyone else for the comments.

good post which begs the issue not discussed much yet. What effect on Harlan's program will consolidation have. Some think it will bring some players to Harlan, some think it will decimate the program. I'm not sure. I think the Class A roller coaster will continue pretty much as is. What do you gurus think?

:thumb: For Harlan, I think, the big deal was the Cumberland streak of at least 4 years was ended. I think any of the teams would have made a big deal of it had they accomplished it. Again, it would seem strange to me to diminish any accomplishments the kids make. Having said that, I know at least for Harlan, we had tremendous away game fan support up until the end, even in horrible weather. I can't speak for the other teams. I think the future Black Bears have an opportunity to become a power. Its about numbers, the right coaching staff, and the ability of all to integrate together. For Harlan, we continue the small school Class A cycle. AGain, JB does well maximizing what he has. Class A schools with growing communities, jobs, etc can do better.

I would guess the Brain is just saying its a different system and would take awhile to make an adjustment. I think thats pretty standard with any system change.

I've heard rumors for 2 years about maybe moving Evarts/Cawood together in fall of 07, and also I've heard Cumberland/Cawood. I could see some advantage both in Sports and in just getting a school spirit together from doing this, but I know Cumberland and Evarts fans would like a final season before consolidation? Any of you future Black Bears have any insight, or is it just rumour.

I may be reading this post wrong, but the myth that Harlan is a school full of "rich folks" is just that, a myth. I may have misread this post though, so excuse me if I did. The Harlan budget is held together with bandaids and cross stitches. JB has done well, though, and everyone must admit with small numbers, and a small class A school pool of talent. All us Dragon fans, like everyone for their team, wish we could advance into the late playoff rounds. Since this is a Cumberland thread, I won't tread there again as we have aired it out on the good ole Preps many times about how class A teams rise above mediocrity. Cumberland, along with Evarts, and Harlan next year will be interesting. Harlan will be on a major rebuilding year. Cumberland lost a lot, but always is competitive, and Evarts has the numbers, and just needs, well lets say leadership to get it together. I doubt any one of these three teams will make much noise next year past the county, but who knows? Stranger things have happened. If Coach Perry can get things moving at James A, they may be the next "Kings of the County".

sounds a little like sour grapes. What has Harlan done by beating county teams the last two years? Something that hadn't been done in a while. Why would you diminish the kids accomplishment except for jealosy. Prob. won't happen next year for Harlan at least. Let folks have thier accomplishments, even if its not your team. AGain, on the play, think what you like.

guys, think what you like. I said the first desired result was to bounce the ball off a player, I didn't say it didn't take a little fortune for it to go just right. Coaches run drills like this all the time. It happened that Bianchi was a very accurate kicker (lots of soccer in his background). In on side kick situations, if you noticed, Harlan always kicked hard never a lob. Sorry, but like it or not, the play was meant to go that way, but we all know they had to have fortune on their side to be able to recover. Again, it worked twice last year. It didn't work that way sometimes also.
