Lots more boys, enrollment is prob. the culprit. Also, coaches tell me they just can't get kids off the internet (lol), and the PlayStation to come out and play.

Well, may be, but I happen to know the administration went to the mat for him. I think the something that is wrong is the KHSAA. Just look at the craziness with the playoff system, the mess with the realignment, for instance letting certain teams pick where they want to play. (no one in this county), the issue of public/private. It doesn't surprise me much. There were issues between parents that are private that affected this also. This however isn't the place to bring them to light.

LB may have been responding to me Waggle, but in any case, I too believe that if a kid "goes after" a good education, he/she can at Cawood. And I agree the size of the school can make a difference in how hard it is to keep discipline. I do think that no matter how hard it is, that you still have to do it, and there are more principals to do just that at Cawood. I just think that Harlan is more focused on Academic excellence than Cawood. At any rate, I'm ready to get back to FB! Dairy Deluxe with Cheeze, no onion, but onion rings and a peanut butter shake. Lordy!

Well, I was going to try to get back to football, but since you asked.... I think Harlan County has some fine elementary and middle schools. Yes, by test scores, but also having watched my kids compete with them in academic teams. Also, by the innovative ways they reward their kids and seem to care. I also have close friends with kids in those schools. I won't name the ones, cause I don't want to start a different arguement. Something happens when high school time comes around. Look at the % of students who attend/graduate from college. Look at the test scores. Look at the academic teams. I happen to know the discipline is fairly lax at Cawood.(incredible source for this info, so you can argue, but without basis). I have some friends kids in different years tell about how ahead they felt after transferring from Harlan to Cawood. I don't want to put down any school, but facts are facts. Cawood High School is broken and needs to be fixed. I'm talking discipline and academics. I hope the new school helps, but if the same old folks do the same old thing, then you will get the same old results. There are some good educators there, I know and some great students. For some reason though, the results are less than county taxpayors should settle for. Again, I am not downing anyone. Just answering your question.

Yes, guys, thats why I think I should have the choice, not for sports, although you can't stop folks from considering that. I've said it before, if the best elementary school is Wallins, I should be able to send my kid there. If I want to switch to Rosspoint for middle, I should be able to. If I want them then to go to Harlan for High School, I should be able to choose that. Its about my control of how my tax money is spent for my child.

Hey, agree with you on that one! I'm saying a parent should have their choice if they pay taxes. That ain't the way it is, but I think its whats right. If the rule is no recruiting , thats the way it should be. No arguement from me on that one.:thumb:

I could have sworn that Cawood had both middle school teams up until the New Harlan team was formed? Anyone know for sure? As for the size, its about your perspective. 14-15 literally against 40 are pretty terrible odds in football.

I'll take Harlan's problems any time over County. Maybe the big Patriot creators put themselves in a bad spot taking away Cawood and Wallin's identity in Middle School football.

Its fine to form a "super team", just don't get bent out of shape if my 15 doesn't want to play your 40. Harlan competed with Evarts and Cumberland. Again, ask Evarts and Cumberland how they feel about the Patriots. As to holding back, my opinion is if the student stays back, they don't play sports period, but nobody likes my opinion. As to the pee wee league, you would have maybe 4 teams without the city kids. Folks just ain't going to drive from Lynch, Bledsoe, and Holmes Mill for practice, and even Saturday Games. I know a little about this one, cause I was involved the first year. Again, you need to "think" for yourself and not quote the "company line". Basketball is very different, but if you can't see it, I can't take your blinders off for you. This kind of behavior is what gives the county district a "small" reputation. And hey, if they don't want to play Harlan, fine with me too, but too bad for kids of both districts. And by the way, I think you and I finally agree on something. The Pee Wee league should be a joint venture. I wonder if you know who would agree to let the City help? No, I don't either.

Thats my point about recruiting. There aren't any jobs anywhere around to recruit families to. That makes the accusations more ridiculous. And as to city kids. Those are any kid who choses to come to Harlan. However, theres no denying that Harlan sports benefits from any talent who chose to attend school in the city from the county.

Who are you talking about? Also, Harlan/Cawood has been a game for many many years. I do believe there was a gap after the big basketball fight in the 1970s and for awhile the two schools didn't play, but in recent memory, there hasn't been a gap. I guess you are two one track minded to discuss the difference between football, basketball, and baseball, but when you are a team with 15-20 players every year, playing teams like Bell and this conglomerated New Harlan team(which was created because no county team could compete with Bell) its a useless venture. Also with the county's more liberal hold back policy, what you had was a team of maybe 40 with lots of true freshmen, playing a team of 14-15 many times with maybe 1-2 hold backs. Ask Cumberland and Evarts if they feel on equal terms with the big Patriots! As to the overcoming part, who said they couldn't get a good education at Cawood? I think the original point was, parents should be able to choose.
