  1. Trinity v. Cincinnati St. Xavier. Who wins and by how much? How is the Trinity injury situation? I saw Cincinnati St. Xavier in their opener, and their star running back Darius Ashley sprained an ankle early. He did not play last week when they dismantled number 5 nationally DeMatha. BTW, today they play the Tarblooders of Glenville, Ohio, ranked eighth in USA TODAY's preseason Midwest Region rankings, who earlier this year lost to Long Beach, Calif., No. 11 in USA TODAY's Super 25, 21-13. Ashley's status is uncertain for the Glenville game.
  2. Very good. Congrats on a victory over an over matched but courageous team. Now on to Cincinnati against a very good team that will provide formidable opposition. I saw Cincinnati X play their opener and was impressed, but happily reminded their confident fans what happened the last time Trinity played a team ranked number one in Ohio.
  3. As discussed above, the injury situation may be a factor in this game. The latest word is that X will be without the services of three players, two of whom appear headed for Bowl division (the old 1A) schools next year. Lex Cath may be without one starter, a possible eventual 1A player. Will this affect the outcome? Why or why not?
  4. Flaget High School was opened on October 21, 1942. I believe that it closed June 6, 1974. The Flaget Braves were hard to beat!
  5. I have done a decent amount of research on Hornung and tend to believe you are correct that he was the best football player ever in Kentucky to not win Mr. Football. Much like a prototypical Michael Bush, he could do it all and do it all well. He could pass, run, and kick. He had size (6 ft. 2 in., 215 lbs), speed, guile, and toughness. This thread is "Best players not to win Mr. Football". Indeed, he did not win Mr. Football because "Mr. Football" did not exist at the time. Had it existed, and had he not won, you, myself, and UKCATSFAN could organize a picket of the "Mr. Football" apparatus! Snippets regarding Hornung from an earlier thread on the Best High School Football player ever(Kentucky): "Most people don't realize he not only played QB at Flaget he also punted, kicked field goals, pats and even played some on defense, if it was a close game. In College at Notre Dame he played QB, HB, DE, punted, kicked off, kicked FGs, kicked PATs and was on the kick off return team. In fact in his final College game against USC he ran back a kick of 95 yards playing with TWO broken thumbs. He won the Heisman in 1956 (how many others from KY have won the Heisman?) His ability to "do it all" continued into the NFL...Most people don't realize he held the NFL record for the most points scored by an individual player in a single season for 46yrs until LaDaian Tomlinson broke it last year. Just an FYI the Packers only played 12 games in 1960 when it set the record and he played RB.-176pts Paul Hornung, Green Bay, 1960 (15-td, 41-pat, 15-fg) I might even venture to say he played on the best NFL team that ever existed the 1961 Packers team. He was like a greek god among men when he was in High School, he in his high School prime against any of the others mentioned in theirs, its no contest." "No less than Vince Lombardi said of Hornung:"Paul is tremendous down near the goal line. He's the finest man I've ever seen when he gets down there." His Notre Dame coach, Frank Leahy, said of the 6 ft. 2 in., 215 Ibs Hornung: "He runs like a mower going through grass." "And his kicking—why, when he reported to me as a freshman, he could punt 80 yds. and place-kick over the crossbar from 70 yds. out.""
  6. That is my hope also. Butler is young and the coach is in his second year. I say Rocks 54-0.
  7. At Trinity. Who wins and by how much?
  8. Who was the most dominant Mr. Football in Kentucky high school history? For the purposes of this thread dominant is defined as how much better than the average player that year that particular Mr. Football was. As an aid, I have listed, by year, each Mr. Football, his college, and his pro career, if any. (Source-Wikipedia). 1986 Frank Jacobs Newport Central Catholic Notre Dame 1987 Kurt Barber Paducah Tilghman Southern California New York Jets (NFL) Denver Broncos (NFL) Chicago Bears (NFL) 1988 Jeff Brohm Trinity (Louisville) Louisville San Francisco 49ers (NFL) – 1996-97 1989 Pookie Jones Calloway County Kentucky British Columbia Lions (CFL) – 1997-? 9. Ox, we are flying under the radar thus far because we have merited under the radar treatment, based upon scrimmages and regular season. Trinity beat these guys badly in a scrimmage, but the Rocks seem to be firing on all cylinders and may have one of their all time great teams. If Israel plays for Cath and X again has a number of players out with injuries, look for a very tight affair. Predictions for this game are fraught with uncertainty because of the injury bug for both teams. Assuming everyone plays for both teams, X 28-14.
  10. 1. Trinity 2. Highlands 3. Male 4. Bowling Green 5. X, Lex. Cath
  11. Park1221, the excessive reaction may have been blowback from a long simmering dispute between St. X and Trinity. X has traditionally played few, if any, juniors on the jv team. T traditionally plays juniors, For some reason this rankles followers of both schools. Guru's take on it is similar to the view many of us have: "I think programs do what works for them. Trinity plays juniors on the JV and I strongly assume Moeller does not. I don't have any issue with it, I just want to be informed when I consider the final score of a contest like this, that is all."
  12. He has tried several times but your phone is always busy with the advice you are giving to coach Beatty.
  13. I viewed the Trinity "fluke' win over Central. As I recall, the Yellowjackets began taunting a bit when it appeared the Rocks were beaten. Trinity roared back to win 19-12. That Central squad learned the hard way that you don't tug on Superman's cape.
  14. X has been hard to read thus far in scrimmages and the first game, but 31- 14 sounds right.
  15. That reminds me of the old Winston Churchill quote, responding to the statement that one of his enemies was a humble man: "Well, he has a lot to be humble about." Regarding the predictions of the size of the Trinity victory, PepRock01, many who make predictions may have hidden agendas. Most knowledgeable football people do concur on a Rocks victory; the margin is the issue, and that could depend on when Coach Beatty inserts the reserves. RockPride, I have always analogized the 94 Trinity team to the 99 X team. X stunned an undefeated Male team in the playoffs, paving the way for a Rocks state title. In 99, Trinity returned the favor, defeating a Henry Clay squad I thought was the best in the state, clearing the way for an X state title.
  16. stickymitts: High school only. onetoya: Al Baker is on the list. punttheball: Artose Pinner is listed with the Minnesota Vikings this year. He was a load. Sandman32: I saw Larry Schrieber play his senior year in college. I did not know that he had played HS ball at Dixie. I suppose it is because his career was so long ago (1949-1952) that Paul Hornung does not receive more attention. He had size (6 ft. 2 in., 215 lbs), speed, guile, and toughness.

  18. Who was the greatest high school running back to ever play in Kentucky? I have compiled a starter list. Try to vote with your head, not your heart, to the extent possible. 19. As usual per this author, well written and informative. Projects of this nature are time consuming. Thanks for the time, talent and effort. BTW, Scribe, do you not see the clash of BGP's pre season number one 6A against BGP's pre season number two 5A (Trinity v. Bowling Green) as one of the "Five games to keep an eye on this weekend"?
  20. A good 5A team takes on a 6A team that is the consensus number one in Kentucky this year at the 6A team's home field. BG lost a lot of talent last year (Avery Hibbs, Stuart Hines, etc. but returns an experienced and talented QB and explosive receivers. The O line is inexperienced and the defense was nicked for 21 points by Boyle County. If Trinity has a weakness this season it has yet to be revealed in scrimmages. Already the Rocks have handily vanquished a talented team from a lower classification (Lex Cath in a scrimmage). This could be the beginning of another memorable season for the Shamrocks. Trinity 42 Bowling Green 7
  21. You are no doubt correct regarding the smile on his face when he said it. The Courier quoted him as quipping "They would have taken me and thrown me off the back of the bleachers," regarding the Tigers' faithful had his team lost. This was just Coach engaging in a bit of mirthful hyperbole. RockPride: Re: "weird vibe" Part of the feeling may have been that one seldom attends a HS football game where the temperature at kickoff is hovering near 100 degrees.
  22. All Tell, elaborate on the boycott. Is it limited to Trinity? Does/would Eastern's athletes play Assumption, Mercy, DeSales or any other private?
  23. No doubt! Yet another reason to attend. Speculators, you have been advised. Ox, as the broker of this hot tip, do you get a commission?
