Isn't Hurd considered the CCHS ace?

Coach Matt Wilhoit decided to stop the bleeding (6 game losing streak) today in Florence and threw Brad Krohman on 4 days rest. He took care of business, pitching a complete game 2 hitter, striking out 7, in leading BCHS to a 12-1 5 inning win over NewCath. Hitting stars were led by Senior Josh Alexander's first HR, a 3 run shot which highlighted Boone's 7 run 2nd inning which chased NewCath starter Pangello. Mark Reed had 2 hits for Boone, as did Kevin Williams. One of Kevin's hits was a 2 RBI double. Alexander also added a single, and John Ham went 3 for 3 with an RBI. Kurt Kordenbrock also drove in two with a single. Boone goes to 10-6 and is off till Friday when they face Scott HS at Champions Window Field at 7 PM.

You could maybe flip a coin between Wander and Nick Houlehan for the #2 spot. Nick was not available, having started against LexCath on Saturday am.

Garrett Wander started and certainly did not have his usual stuff. Remember he pitched well last week in the CovCath game before errors hurt him. A cast of relievers then followed without much success. 10 Boone walks certainly contributed to Dixie's cause, but coming off the last 5 games Boone's pitching staff was somewhat shorthanded and overworked. Take nothing away from the Colonels, though, as they swung the bats well and often. Nichols went the distance for Dixie. Boone had HRs from Cory Farris, 3 hits from Brian Robertson, including a 2 RBI double, John Ham had 2 hits, and Drew Fulton had a 2 run HR for his first varsity hit.

Elliot for beechwood is good. But the best junior in the 9th region is Corey Farris. I don't know what everyone else thinks? This is not directed to be against Elliot because he is right up there. But the term best junior would be imo definitely Corey Farris.

Boone County lost 3 yesterday at the Harrison County Classic, but the day was not without its bright spots. One, all three teams, LexCath, Eastern, and Boyd County are ranked in the top 30 in the state, two, Cory Farris and Frosh Ronald Cotton made the all-tourney team, and, three, none of the defensive lapses which plagued Boone is losses last week to CovCath and Ryle reared their head. By the time the weekend ended Boone's last 5 games were all against top 30 teams in the space of 4 days. These were 3 quality teams Boone faced and I challenge anyone to play all 3 of them in one day without your number 1 and 3 starters available. Cory awakend from a power slump with 2 HRs and a double, among his other hits during the day. Cotton's first 2 varsity hits were HRs in the game against Louisville Eastern. John Ham also homered in the Eastern game. Their was no quit, despite the long day (at Cynthiana by 9:15 am and back home at 11:00 pm), and all of us there came away convinced this bunch will bounce back from this week, learn from it, and be ready to make their run over the next month.

Congrats to the Raiders. They played better ball tonight and deserved the win. I have only one earned run allowed by Brad Krohman as the Ryle cause was aided by 5 BC errors. The defense has got to toughen up. Great weather and great crowd for a ballgame. I estimate the crowd at well over 1000 folks, and don't believe I am off by much. A lot of great student body support tonight for both clubs. I have said this in previous posts, but if you are a HS baseball fan you need to start coming out to Florence for these Friday night games.

I would be interested in seeing the thoughts of all of you on how the game should be played the Right Way. Post a tip, pet peeve, or other comment that may be helpful to the many HS players who log on BGP to catch up on the scores. Maybe they and the rest of us will learn something. First one: In an RBI situation look for the first good pitch you can drive, and attack it. You are unlikely to see another good one, especially from a decent pitcher who recognizes he just served up a mistake.

Congrats to the Colonels. They certainly deserved the win, outplaying Boone both defensively and with key hits. However, it should be noted it was a pitcher's duel through 4 with the Colonels holding only a 1-0 lead. 3 Boone errors and 3 CovCath hits ignited the 5 run 5th which put the game away. Garrett Wander deserved a better fate as the Boone starter before being lifted after the 5th with a high pitch count. A Boone reliever pitched the 6 run 6th which led to the run rule Colonels' victory. Boone will have to learn from this and be prepared to make the plays and get the clutch hits, which eluded them today, if they are to challenge Ryle, LexCath, and Louisville Eastern in their next 3 games.

Boone County scored 2 in the top of the first, highlighted by starting pitcher, Brad Krohman's RBI double, and never looked back in beating Conner today at Conner. Boone scored 2 in the first and put the game away with a 7 run third. Conner had trouble throwing strikes in the third, and the inning also included 4 or 5 singles for Boone. Krohman went the first 4 innings to improve his record to 4-0. He allowed 2 hits and 1 run, and struck out 4. Nick Houlehan pitched the 5th and 6th for Boone allowing single runs in both innings and pitching out of a bases loaded jam in the 6th. Junior Holden Rouse allowed 1 run in the 7th. In an unusual twist, I believe each of Boone's runs were knocked in by a different hitter as Coach Wilhoit had a chance to play a lot of his subs today. The win moves Boone to 9-0 on the season. Big games coming up before the week concludes against CovCath Wednesday, Ryle on Friday, and LexCath and Louisville Eastern, both on Saturday as part of the Harrison County Classic.

Still at Boone County as far as what the players have been told.

Senior Brad Krohman is the clear number 1. Junior Nick Houlehan has been the number 2 starter to-date. Other starters from the senior class have been Kurt Kordenbrock and Brian Meimann. Effective relief has been provided from juniors Garrett Wander and Holden Rouse. Wander was the starter against NewCath on Friday night.

$5 for adults and I believe it was $3 for students. Good crowd tonight, probably around 150 or maybe a few more. I expect a big turn out next Friday for the district seeding contest at 7 PM between Boone and Ryle.

This one deserves more than just a report of who pitched and who hit; an absolutely well-played game by both teams with only one error committed the entire game on a cool, but not too cold night, under the lights at the Florence Freedom's Champion Window Field. Pitching dominated the first 5 innings. Garrett Wander held NewCath to one run, while at the same time Enzweiler for NewCath only allowed 2. Things changed in the top of the 6th when NewCath put together a 2 out rally which led to 4 runs and a 5 to 2 lead. This represented the largest and latest deficit Boone has yet faced during what is now their 8-0 start. Boone responded in the bottom of the 6th, the highlight being Mark Reed's 3rd HR of the season, a 3 run shot over the fence in right field to stake Boone to a 6-5 lead. NewCath was not done yet, getting the lead off runner on board to start the 7th. The runner was forced out at second on a sac bunt attempt. With runners on first and second with one out a couple of batters later, Boone turned a 4 to 6 to 3 DP to end the game. The win went to Nick Houlehan in relief of Wander. The hitting star for Boone was Reed, who went 3 for 4, with a double, HR, and 4 RBI. The other RBIs were from Kurt Kordenbrock and Brad Krohman. Corey Farris had a double and 2 walks for Boone. John Ham had 2 base hits for Boone, including one which led off the bottom of the decisive 6th. Clayton Stone for NewCath went 2 for 3 with an RBI. Others for NewCath played well and deserve mention. I am sorry I do not know their names. Great game. Great setting. More games are upcoming at the field. Don't miss them if you are a fan of good HS baseball. Last night, CovCath over Ryle 3-2 and tonight this one. I encourage you to support the Freedom's effort to give our area kids a superb place to play. My guess is the expected rain which will probably do what the cold could not, wash out all games in N.KY. tomorrow.

Boone County went to 7-0 on the season with an 11-1 6 inning victory over Holmes today in Florence. Brad Krohman was the star of the day with 3 hits, including 2 HRs, 3 RBIs and a complete game 1-hitter. He struck out 10. The no-no was lost on a slow rolling infield hit down the 3rd base line in the 5th off the bat of the Holmes 3B, Wells. Cory Farris also added a 3 run HR of his own for Boone. Mark Reed had 2 hits for the Rebels, including a 2B. John Ham and Brian Meiman also had 2 hits each for Boone. Ham also added 2 RBIs and 2 SBs. The game finishing hit was a 2 RBI pinch-hit single by Tony Krohman in the bottom of the 6 with the score 9-1. To editorialize for a moment, it is hard to believe this squad, after getting 6 votes in the KY. HS Coaches Assoc. pre-season poll, received no statewide votes in last week's poll given their impressive start.

The newspaper reported the score as 10-4 this morning.

Boone County improved to 6-0 this season with a 10-5 win at Highlands. Nick Houlehan went the first 5+ for Boone to pick up his second win of the year. Garrett Wander earned the save with 2 innings of relief work. Mark Reed, Nick Houlehan, and Brad Krohman each drove in 2 runs for Boone. Highlands hung tough behind Pat Allen the first 3, but his defense crumbled behind him in Boone's 6 run 4th. A non-official book at the game had Highlands with 6, maybe more, errors, 4 of them in the 4th alone.

Boone County exploded for 12 runs in the bottom of the 4th to put away Villa Madonna today in Florence. Senior Brian Meiman went the first 3 on a very cold afternoon for the win. Junior Todd Krohman pitched the last 2 for Boone. Among many hitting stars were Sophomore Brian Robertson with 2 doubles and 4 RBI and Junior Mark Reed, who continued his hot hitting with 3 base knocks. Boone goes to 4-0. They will travel to Ludlow tomorrow afternoon at 2 PM to complete last night's suspended game, which Boone leads 13-2 after 3 complete.

I talked to Coach Sanders and Bellevue won 19-13 vs. Berea in a wild one.

Boone County broke open a 4-4 game in the 5th with 7 runs and went on to an 11-7 win over Brossart. Junior Nick Houlehan pitched 4 strong innings as the starter and Junior Garrett Wander followed with 3 innings of relief work to pick up his first varsity win. Boone's 5th was highlighted by Junior shortstop Mark Reed's 3 run HR. Brad Krohman had a 2 run bomb in the first. Junior Cory Farris had a 2 for 2 day with 2 doubles. He is now 3 for 4 in this young season with 2 doubles and 1 HR. Brossart attempted a rally in the top of the 7th aided by Heck's HR, but it was too little too late. Boone goes to 2-0 and faces Holy Cross tomorrow, weather permitting.

Boone County opened their season with a nice 6-1 win at home against Pendleton County. Senior, Brad Krohman allowed only 2 hits, while striking out 8, to get the win. He went 5 strong innings. Junior, Garrett Wander pitched the last 2 and struck out 4. The offense was keyed, as usual, by Cory Farris, who was 1 for 2 on the day, that hit being a 3 run HR to right center.
