Dixie 16 Boone Co. 8

They had to get something going after the blown game against Newport, and putting up a 16 spot against Boone seemed to be good enough...I believe #8 started for Boone

Garrett Wander started and certainly did not have his usual stuff. Remember he pitched well last week in the CovCath game before errors hurt him. A cast of relievers then followed without much success. 10 Boone walks certainly contributed to Dixie's cause, but coming off the last 5 games Boone's pitching staff was somewhat shorthanded and overworked. Take nothing away from the Colonels, though, as they swung the bats well and often. Nichols went the distance for Dixie. Boone had HRs from Cory Farris, 3 hits from Brian Robertson, including a 2 RBI double, John Ham had 2 hits, and Drew Fulton had a 2 run HR for his first varsity hit.

Its true Boone's arms were wore out great win for Dixie however, how does a coach let his starting pitcher throw 139 pitches in a game. Seems like this is a lot of pitches for a young man to throw. Hate to see Nicholos wear out a good arm before College.

Especially, coming back in the 5, 6 or 7 inning winning 12-5, 14-6 and 16-8. No way would I let my son continue this long. You hope kids like this make it to college. For Matt, it may end up being all about high school and later wonder why he has nothing left in what could be a hopeful career in college.

If I am not mistaking, Wander is their # 2 pitcher, the kid that pitched against Cov Cath. That's a nice accomplishment for Dixie.

You could maybe flip a coin between Wander and Nick Houlehan for the #2 spot. Nick was not available, having started against LexCath on Saturday am.

That is terrible, does a high school want to win that bad to throw a kid that many kids, Matt is a hell of a player and a good kid, would hate to see him use up all his arm in high school, when he can use it to get a good college education, terrible decision by the coach.

In that situation the coach knows what the player can do and if he is still throwing strong than he has the right to leave him in esp. if the player tells the coach he is fine. My first start this year I went 9 innings againts southern and threw 157 pitches and I was still throwing as hard if not harder in the 9th as I was in the first. So the coach knows his players and what they are capable and I am sure that if the coach thought he was jepordizing the kids future he would have never left him in for so long.

70-80 maybe 90 depending on how the pitcher did to get to this count but 139 is too many.

First of all it was not that many pitches, believe me when I say Matt's dad knows how many it was! To imply Matt's dad and our Coaches would ever do anything to harm a player's arm is just sad! Matt was throwing just as hard if not harder at the end and wanted to go the distance.Great win Dixie!!

canthitme - that is a shame if someone let you throw 157 pitches in a game. When is the last time you saw a major league pitcher throw that many pitches ? (Answer: rarely, if ever). Part of the reason that you shouldn't throw that many pitches is because adrenelin can sometimes compensate for a tired arm (thus your statement "I was still throwing as hard if not harder in the 9th inning . .") and you don't even realize at the time the stress you are putting on your arm and shoulder. In addition - while I'm sure you are a strong, tough kid - that many pitches would greatly tire/weaken anyone's arm and certainly make you more susceptible to injury the next time you throw. You will not find a legitimate medical doctor/specialist anywhere that would tell you it's a good idea for a pitcher - especially a high school age pitcher - to throw 157 pitches. Again, I'll bet you are indeed a very good pitcher and have a strong, lively arm, but if you want it to stay that way, you had better think long and hard about approaching pitch counts anywhere near that level. And quite honestly, I really have to question the motives of any coach that would knowingly allow a pitcher to throw that many pitches in a game. I could care less if you were throwing 10 mph faster on your 157th pitch as opposed to your first pitch - it is unsafe and a surefire way to invite some serious and permanent arm problems.

I saw a score book and the count is correct. 139 pitches.
