Outstanding pitching performance by senior right hand pitcher Matt Curtin who now has beaten both undefeated Boone County and the #1 rated Ryle Raiders.

 

Curtin who had the Boone batters confused for most of the day had some help from his CovCath teammates in the field as the Colonels continue to play some outstanding defense. SS sophomore Holochor and senior 3rd baseball Shane "the Vacuum" Popham are making both the routine and difficult plays, are well as the outfield of Stein, Reis, and Nutini are catching balls that other teams are letting drop in for hits.

 

CovCath at the plate was led by Maile, Isler, Stein, and a host of others players. CovCath seemed to always have men on the bases, but again were leaving the runners stranded that is until the top of the fifth when the flood gates opened and the Colonels started flowing past home plate for run after run.

 

Boone had a chance to get back into the game in the bottom of the fifth with the base loaded and two outs, when Coach Krumps brought in the House (Dan Niehaus) to strike out the batter to close out the side.

 

CovCath then scored six more runs in the top of the sixth to put the Rebels in a position to score to keep playing. Coach Krumps brought in Alex Smith to pitch the sixth, and he did the job closing out the game.

 

CovCath is now 10-2 while Boone County suffers their first loss of the season and falls to 9-1

Poor RD.... With the way Nutini is playing in the field and at the plate and with the Vacuum at third with his bat, where does RD play? Even if he DH's who do you take out Isler, or Bleser? O well, problems like this are nice to have on your team.........

Congrats to the Colonels. They certainly deserved the win, outplaying Boone both defensively and with key hits. However, it should be noted it was a pitcher's duel through 4 with the Colonels holding only a 1-0 lead. 3 Boone errors and 3 CovCath hits ignited the 5 run 5th which put the game away. Garrett Wander deserved a better fate as the Boone starter before being lifted after the 5th with a high pitch count. A Boone reliever pitched the 6 run 6th which led to the run rule Colonels' victory. Boone will have to learn from this and be prepared to make the plays and get the clutch hits, which eluded them today, if they are to challenge Ryle, LexCath, and Louisville Eastern in their next 3 games.

Looks like Boone's "soft" schedule finally caught up to them. Solid win for the Colonels as they proved this year will be a two team race with them and Ryle.

Wish that were true, but I can't see that this year in the Ninth Region. Beechwood, Cov Holy Cross, Boone County and a couple more will have plenty to say about who wins the Ninth. Baseball is a game that because of Pitching, can change one team from a just so, so team, into a tough victory.

It's good to be humble OG, which is why i respect you so much , But you gotta admit, both CCH and Ryle have looked imrpessive this year against other nky competition.

 

But pitching absolutely can change a so so team in to a tough victory. I just feel both Ryle and Covcath's pitching are much better than the Boone's, HC's, and Beechwoods.

I see what both of you are saying. We all know that games are played because on a given day the underdog can rise up and knock you off. Ryle and CovCath have shown to be the two top dogs this year in the 9th and unbiased observers would certainly rate them as the favorites. So, would biased observers. But, neither team will take any of the challengers lightly, because baseball can be a crazy game on a given day.

Wasnt the hhs covcath score 2-1 and didnt curtin pitched as well? I'd think Highlands should be a team to watch out for. They are just a couple of outs here and there from having an outstanding record. If their pitching holds up they could be tough.

Covington Catholic's baseball team entered the season with two pitchers recovering from arm surgery and four newcomers in the starting lineup.

A lot of teams would get off to a slow start in that situation, but not the Colonels. They defeated Boone County, 12-0, in six innings on Wednesday to run their record to 10-2.
