This is obviously a very subjective question. However, in this rare Spring 2012 weather season, can you claim to be serious about baseball if you did not play more than 30 of the 36 allowed regular season games? My response: No. Nothing is more important than game conditions and repetitions / experience, particularly in baseball. If you didn't schedule enough to start with, get on the phone and find some folks to play. If you are running short of pitching, give someone else a shot that has never tried. You never know how they will respond.

at Dixie. Details anyone? I know JR Quentin Murray pitched for the Birds and the Birds' offense was slow to get started. I think they scored 3 in the 6th and 1 in the 7th to cut the deficit, but could not claw all the way back. Birds are off until FRI when they play Conner at Highland Park at 5:00 PM. If it doesn't rain, this will be the Birds 36th game of the season. Congrats to the Coaches for juggling the schedule to get to the maximum # of games. Experience is huge for a young team and getting to play this # of games is invaluable. When was the last time the Birds (or any KY team) actually played 36 games in a single season? I'm sure it has been done recently and that many teams will do it this year, but it is such a fine calculus of weather, scheduling games, cancelling games and keeping momentum going into the playoffs. (Hmmm, maybe another thread?)

It is more of a "geographic regional" tourney than a "KHSAA 9th Region" tourney. Not sure if the 10th, or the schools in that geography, have a similar JV tourney.

Nice showing overall and a nice age range from 2 to 90! Not sure about total attendance, but I know we went through 88 hot dogs, 4 large pizzas, several inflatable bats, multiple temporary tattoos, bunches of silly bands and quite a few autographed pictures by the Seniors for the little ones. As important, I know some of the young kids got to toss on the field with the Varsity players prior to the game. Hopefully some of them grow up wanting to play on the same field for the Birds. Thanks to all of the volunteers who helped make it a special event.

If the game you were going to watch tonight (Varsity, JV, Knothole) was rained out, come on over to Highland Park for Community Appreciation Day with the Highlands Bluebirds v. Dayton Greendevils. Festivities start around 4:00 PM with 1st pitch at 5:00 PM. Free pizza (donated by Mio's), hot dogs and small Gatorades while they last. A small way of saying "Thanks" from the Highlands Baseball team to the community for all their help and support this year. Very good to see for Duesing, Bausch (who played 2B) and Meyer (who played 1B). A nice reward for Grant sticking with it and working hard through adversity. A tip of the hat to Bausch who does exactly what is asked of him without questioning and with a great attitude. A much-appreciated "Thanks" to Meyer who, after a slow start, has been crushing the ball over the last 3/4 of the season. Also a "rock" at 1B saving the infielders errors all season with great scoops.

Appreciate the correction. I was not there. In fact, I was watching the pitch by pitch on my iPhone (thanks ESPN iScore!) at a stop light. Early onset Alzheimer's when attempting to remember the sequence the next morning when I posted.

From the description, correct call is likely to give the runner from 1B 2B and kill the ball based on the "out" call from the ump who didn't see the ball trickle away. Bases loaded with 2 out and the score 3-1 AC with AC still batting. You shouldn't jeopardize the defense by allowing the play to go on and any other runners to advance since the defense was correctly acting as if the game was over based on the umpire's call. You also can't allow the OBVIOUSLY incorrect call of out to stand. If it was a judgment call of whether he was bobbling it and had possession when he touched the base, let the call stand and move to the bottom of the inning. Hope Blue is OK.

at Highland Park. Birds built a lead (3-0). Beechwood rallied to tie it in the top of the 6th. Birds pushed across a run in the bottom of the 6th to take the lead and held on to win it. Great effort by SO Joey Cochran on the bump. 5 shutout innings with only 2 walks and several Ks. As Coach Baioni has said, the defense plays well behind a pitcher throwing strikes. SR Mitch Meyer with a couple of 2B bombs and JR Jakes Lester and Heck with big offensive contributions. Heck also threw out a runner at the plate from RF. In the bottom of the 6th, SO Evan Allen starts the 2 out rally with a single up the middle. Steals second. Scores on a single by FR Luke Hennigan, beating the throw to the plate. Birds play St. Henry tonight at Highland Park and it is Senior Night. Festivities start a little after 4:00 PM with the 1st pitch at 5:00 PM. Also, Fan / Community Appreciation Day is MON, May 14th at Highland Park against Dayton. Same schedule with festivities at 4:00 PM and 1st pitch at 5:00 PM. Come on out for both games!!!

Highlands 3, Beechwood 2 FINAL from Beechwood. Details to follow from those who were there, but sounds like Doty pitched a gem (CG, 7 Ks & 0 BB) and drove in a run. Orne had a huge 2 run double with 2 outs in the top of the 5th. Birds advance to face the winner of Scott v. NewCath tomorrow. (Location TBD). Congrats Baby Birds!

With 7 games scheduled for tonight and a great weather forecast, I thought I would bump this back to the 1st page and ask for any insight going into tonight's matchups. Also, please post results to this thread for discussion in 1 location rather than several. P.S. Pretty sure the Beechwood v. HHS game has been moved to a 4:30 PM start. at Highland Park Closely played game with a unique ending. JR Gabe Schultz pitched very well for HHS, going 6.2 for the W. Cooper pitcher (#31, I think) stifled the Birds most of the night as well. Schultz was also a star at the plate going 2/3 with an RBI. With the Birds up 3-2 entering the Top 7th, Schultz retires the 1st batter on a nice diving catch by RF JR Jake Heck. Next batter hits a double over Heck's head. Following batter hits another double to chase Schultz in favor of JR Jake Liggett on the bump. Before Liggett makes a pitch, Coach Baioni appeals that the runner missed 3rd on the 2nd double. Umpire says "Yes, he did" and rings him up for the 2nd out. Takes the score back to 3-2 from a 3-3 tie. Liggett struggles with control to walk the bases loaded. Next batter grounds one up the middle which is stabbed by FR Jakey Whitford who steps on 2nd for the final out. Birds next play Beechwood at Highland Park on THU and St. Henry at Highland Park on FRI for Senior Night.

at Simon Kenton on 5.4.12 Wasn't there, but heard that SK hit the ball solidly again off of JR starter Quentin Murray. Anyone with more details, please share. BTW, HHS JV defeated SK 6-4 at Highland Park last night. Rematch scheduled for today for JV and Frosh both cancelled.

Can anyone confirm what I heard at the HHS game yesterday? A - 2012 Draw Newport v. Bellevue in "play in" game. Winner plays Highlands NewCath v. Dayton on the other side of the bracket. B - Bellevue said that in the future they will vote for seeding (rather than blind draw) in District Tournament, but that this will only apply to baseball and not other sports.

at McNick Good game as the Birds left the tying run at 2B in the top of the 7th. FR Jones and SO Cochran pitched for the Birds. Key hit was a 2 out bases loaded single by McNick in the 4th to keep them out front. Some nice pitching and defense by the Birds to get out of a bases loaded, 0 out situation in the bottom of the 6th without any scoring by McNick and keep the deficit at 3. Birds are off today and next play at Simon Kenton at 7:00 PM on FRI. P.S. They have some very nice facilities coming together at McNick. Looked like the turf football field was brand new.
