I loved Coach Schneider's quote in another article. in discussing what the playoffs may look like if the few football playing privates were banished to their own playoffs, he said "It would end up LexCath vs. CovCath and Trinity vs. X, one heckova doubleheader, but not much of a playoffs!!"
-
I think you'd be shocked at how few you'd have outside 20 miles!!
-
I think it's a joke for them!! They'll just lose the St. Henry kids to Boone & Dixie, unless CovCath would go big!!
-
Couldn't you at least wait until they win something with the kids people complain about, until you name a rule after them??
-
I think there is a maximum of only 18 proposals you can sign on per year!!
-
I believe this rule is already in place in Ohio.
-
At least these three, as some off the major beneficiaries of the banning of the privates, make some sense!! Scanning the list I noticed most of the "new haves" on there. If they can get this passed and then get rid of the independent, city, and open-enrollment schools; they may find a championship or two along the way. Some of these guys might want to rememeber the old saying about glass houses!!

What are the real (and unavoidable) private school advantages?

Maybe there aren't any Real AND Unavoidable Advantages?? But maybe it's too early for this answer!! Or too honest!! -
What are the real (and unavoidable) private school advantages?

Speaking primarilly from a NKY point of view, but I think this holds true in other areas as well; I'd say a REAL advantage I've encountered would be students who come from "participation focused backgrounds". Watching my kids come through the Catholic schools systems, I was constantly amazed at the participation levels in grade and middle schools. My son's grade had 39-40 of 42 kids playing basketball from grades 3-8, similar in my daughter's class. Same held true for volleyball, soccer, baseball, softball, spelling, academic bowl, science fair, etc. Kid's were envolved and stayed envolved and I think that follows through to high school. I'm sure some public schools have the same experiences, but from my personal experiences, it was much more prevelant at the Catholic schools. Just didn't see it from the public school systems up here. Call it more envolved parents or whatever. More AAU teams, select soccer or baseball teams, club volleyball, etc. Money isn't the only factor either. In NKY the publics have a huge facility advantage over the privates, and the privates for the most part have to "fund raise" for everything!! -
Academies, City and Open Enrollment Schools

Thanks for the insight--But then, being a little right leaning, I probably wanted to hear that! -
Some good points in here Buzzy. The problem that many fail to realize is that in the zeal to "get" some schools who many of the publics feel "bend" the rules; they are also hurting the majority of privates who are playing by the rules!! And if you think the only ones "bending" the rules are private schools, then your heads are buried DEEP in the sand!! Wake up guys--The easy way out is to ban all privates, then ban all open enrollment schools, then ban all who take out-of-district students, then ban all transfers, etc. Enforce the rules in place!! But then again--That would take work!!

So you support NCLB, as a better alternative to the "sort and place" method; which would seem ridculous by pigeon-holing kids at an early age, especially boys who often seem to be "late-bloomers". -
We're a little disadvantaged Catholic HS in Alexandria, KY with about 400 students. No football, no powerhouse. I'm assuming you're talking about Newport Central Catholic (1-A) or Covington Catholic (3-A) who traditionally have very good football programs. I can safely say their kids are from NKY as well, but both have had significant problems getting past PUBLIC school powers Beechwood and Highlands the last several years!! Several posts you've made so far, and no facts yet?? You can't always believe "what you hear"!!
-
Feel free to check the Bishop Brossart rosters for out-of-anything kids if you'd like?? Despite serving a suburban/rural area, you'll find most kids live within 10 minutes of the school!! The reason I even mentioned any NKY kids from out-of-state is there were a couple of Cincinnati kids playing for a school over here a couple of years ago, whose inner-city school didn't offer football. (By the way, they didn't win anything with these players, but simply gave some disadvantaged kids a chance to play)
-
Only speaking for one, but I'm confident that all of the ones from the primary private high school I support are from in-state, in-county, in-parish, in-district, from our feeder schools, and still competitive athleticly!! Not sure what you're "hearing", but there's not many out-of-state kids playing in NKY in any given year. Actually, if anything the opposite is true--KY kids playing in OH, but that doesn't happen much any more. Maybe in other parts of the state--But that's just what I hear!!

Academies, City and Open Enrollment Schools

So ignore my comment and explain how these two approaches differ, because I know what they mean to me; and I'd like a comparison from someone who knows the current educational system. -
Did you see them last year? Very solid, with a lot of talent coming up from their top JV and Freshman teams. Would be a mistake to overlook them!!

SS--Respecting your opinion on this matter, what's the difference of these two approaches?? Aren't both somewhat responsible for the "dumbing down" of our schools??
