The Gators (5-4) are hosting the Braves (5-4). The 3A State runner ups from last season will look to close the season with a good win before hosting Larue County next week in Round 1. Game got a little more interesting with the Hawks win over Taylor County last night. Greenwood will be hosting MNH in the 1st rd, a tough matchup but one I believe the Gators can win. Greenwood should be able to own the LOS on both sides of the ball this evening and find a way to win this game. Honestly I’m not sure anybody in 2A can hang around with Beechwood, but I’ll take my chances with the Pirates. This is the year to win one for the legendary Coach Haywood who passed this January, and what better tribute than a State Championship. Coach Varney is a long time Pirate himself, he played and coached under Haywood. Adding another layer to it all is that he has a son who is a SR on this football team. As far as on the field Varney is a defensive mind. I think they’ll be in position to make plays but it’ll be a matter or not if they execute defensively. I look at last year they were bounced out of the 3A Semis due to Jarren Johnson of Union County having a night, 250 on the ground with 4 TD’s. Is the JR QB Queen elite enough to find the holes in the defense and pick them apart and give the sort of performance needed to beat Belfry? I have to admit it sure does seem like it after a stellar regular season from the Tigers QB. I’ll stick with the long shot and destiny of the Pirates though. I’m a sucker for a feel good story and it has all the makings of a classic.

I’ll go with Belfry, sleepy pick, they’ll be able to avoid Beechwood in the 3rd round. Then if it works out the way RPI has it as of this afternoon a long trip to Mayfield or LCA seems to be the trip they’ll have to make in the Semis, which again avoiding the Tigers until a trip to Kroger field would definitely be a route you’d want to have. I like their defense, and their lone loss was to a 10-0 Johnson Central team who looks like they have a State Championship on their mind in 4A.

I figured the Wildcats would have a different energy getting the extra home game, Glasgow better wake up.

I don’t believe Class A would ever be upset getting a noon slot in late November/Early December, if you’re looking at it from a weather perspective. Also don’t have to make it a weekend thing either, can travel home that night and get in your own bed and avoid hotel expenses. When you look at 5A that’s totally opposite, crisp winter breeze, 2 am arrival home or a $100 hotel. Would make sense to shuffle the deck yearly.

Money talks? I remember reading this a few weeks ago and that the UFL would pay for any damages done. Not sure where the UFL is getting their money though, that’s for a different discussion. I’ll eat my own words, I didn’t think this would ever be allowed even under the condition of financing the repairs to their pitch. What’ll be interesting is one of those classic KY weather sort of weeks in the spring where it rains nonstop and the Kings just go out there and tear the place up. Not sure the KHSAA has the finances to handle the possible damage that could be done nor do I believe they are looking for another location for the State Championships, they enjoy it in their backyard.
