  5. 11th Region Tournament / Finals Preview The 11th Region Tournament came to an end on Tuesday night in a defensive battle between Henry Clay and Frederick Douglass. Frederick Douglass scored 4 points quickly to start the game, but the rest of the first half was all Blue Devils as they went to halftime with a 6 point lead. Douglass came out in the third quarter with a renewed sense of energy, which helped them gain a 1 point lead. Henry Clay battled back with the most important run of the game which gave them a 7 point lead at 32-25 heading to the 4th quarter. With 3:23 to go in the game Henry Clay maintained a 37-35 point lead. The Broncos had a couple opportunities to tie the game but their shots did not fall. In the end Henry Clay walked away with the nets, the trophy, and a trip to Rupp Arena as they won 41-36. Kanye Henderson, Aziel Blackwell, and Kyan Miller were all big for the Blue Devils in this game as they were selected to the All-Tournament Team. Salute to the Douglass Broncos and Coach Moseley for a great game, a district championship, and for playing their best basketball at the end of the year. The Blue Devils will face off against 1st Region Champion Murray. Like the Blue Devils, Murray also lost in their district championship before eventually winning their region. Murray also won the 1st Region All A, before eventually losing to All A State Champion Pikeville. Murray is led by Grant Whitaker and Trey Boggess. Looking at their team stats, they shoot the 3 really well. I like the Blue Devils in their first round match-up because of their defensive intensity on the perimeter. I’ll take Henry Clay by 10. Should they win, they will face the winner of Warren Central-Male in the second round. I look for Male to win in the first and second round, and advance to the Final 4. 11th Region Results Tuesday 1st Round: Henry Clay at Lexington Catholic - Henry Clay Won 70-58 Madison Central at Great Crossing – Great Crossing Won 61-55 (OT) Western Hills at Frederick Douglass – Frederick Douglass Won 92-39 Dunbar At Madison Southern – Madison Southern Won 54-46 Friday Semi-finals at EKU 6:15 - Henry Clay vs. Great Crossing – Henry Clay Won 47-43 8:15 - Frederick Douglass vs. Madison Southern- Douglass Won 60-54 Monday March 7th 11th Region Finals at EKU Henry Clay vs. Frederick Douglass – Henry Clay Won 41-36 11th Region Rankings 1. 6. 11th Region Tournament / Finals Preview The 11th Region Tournament tipped off Tuesday night with 3 great games. Frederick Douglass kept rolling as they blitzed Western Hills from the beginning and ended the night with a 43 point win. When this score was posted, it definitely made a statement to the other 3 teams remaining for the semifinals. In perhaps the most surprising win of the night, Henry Clay went into Lexington Catholic and picked up a huge win. The Blue Devils used a great 3rd quarter to pull away from the Knights. In the best game of the night, Great Crossing picked up a great win at home against Madison Central. As I mentioned last week, Madison Central’s point guard was injured in the last play of the district championship and did not play against Great Crossing. Vince Dawson was huge for Great Crossing in this first round match-up. In Richmond, Madison Southern defeated Dunbar in a very physical game with a lot of fouls in the second half. Madison Southern made their free throws and executed down the stretch to knock off the Bulldogs. On Friday night, Henry Clay defeated Great Crossing in a hard fought 4 point victory. The Blue Devils stretched their lead to 10 points in the 4th quarter, but Great Crossing was able to cut in the lead and had a chance to tie the game with under a minute to play but could not pull it off. In the second semifinal, Douglass jumped out to an 11 point lead in the first half before Madison Southern chipped away and eventually took the lead at halftime. The Eagles were in control of the game heading to the 4th quarter, but Frederick Douglass turned up the defensive intensity and finally got some points in transition to take the lead. That made it 7 victories in a row for Frederick Douglass, including their victory over the Blue Devils in the district championship. Monday’s night game should be a great game at EKU. I’ll take the Blue Devils to win by 6, 53-47. I’ll be there Monday night, hope to see you there! 11th Region Results Tuesday 1st Round: Henry Clay at Lexington Catholic - Henry Clay Won 70-58 Madison Central at Great Crossing – Great Crossing Won 61-55 (OT) Western Hills at Frederick Douglass – Frederick Douglass Won 92-39 Dunbar At Madison Southern – Madison Southern Won 54-46 Friday Semi-finals at EKU 6:15 - Henry Clay vs. Great Crossing – Henry Clay Won 47-43 8:15 - Frederick Douglass vs. Madison Southern- Frederick Douglass Won 60-54 Monday March 7th 11th Region Finals at EKU – 7:00 Henry Clay vs. Frederick Douglass 11th Region Rankings 1. 7. There goes my bracket! Went 1-3 on the night. Great night of basketball. Can’t wait for Friday night
  8. 11th Region District Review / Region Preview The District Championships started with a great game in the 44th as Madison Southern defeated Madison Central in the finals by 5 points. The Eagles quickly got up 10-0 before the Indians answered with a run of their own. This was a back-and-forth game the whole way with a great environment at the site of the regional tournament at EKU. The 3 championship games on Friday night did not disappoint. In the 41st, Great Crossing kept rolling as they defeated Western Hills. In the 42nd, Frederick Douglass defeated Henry Clay in the best game of the night. Frederick Douglass also picked up a tough win over Bryan Station in their semifinal game. In the 43rd, Lexington Catholic once again defeated Dunbar. The Bulldogs were up 34-24 before Lexington Catholic made a run to take the lead. However, I would not count out the Bulldogs in the 11th Region Tournament. The top half of the draw includes 4 of the Top 25 teams in the state with Lexington Catholic, Madison Central, Henry Clay, and Great Crossing on the same side of the bracket. Check out the rest of the schedule below and my predictions for the region! District Tournament Results 41st District: Great Crossing 65 Western Hills 50 42nd District: Frederick Douglass 57 Henry Clay 54 (Overtime) 43rd District: Lexington Catholic 47 Dunbar 44 44th District: Madison Southern 48 Madison Central 43 11th Region Schedule Tuesday 1st Round: Henry Clay at Lexington Catholic Madison Central at Great Crossing Western Hills at Frederick Douglass Dunbar At Madison Southern Friday Semi-finals at EKU 6:15 - Winner of LC/HC vs. Winner of GC/MC 8:15 - Winner of FD/WH vs. Winner of MS/PLD Monday March 7th 11th Region Finals at EKU – 7:00 Region Predictions: Lexington Catholic over Henry Clay - This could be the best first round region match-up in the whole state. These two teams have not yet this season. Based upon their body of work, I'll say Lexington Catholic is favored but I would not be surprised if the Blue Devils found a way to win this game. I'll take the Knights by 6. Madison Central over Great Crossing - Is Great Crossing ready for this moment? The only team left standing in Georgetown has had a great season, but are they ready to back it up with a win in the region? On the other side, the Indians are coming off a surprising loss to Madison Southern in their district finals. Trey Skaggs was injured on the last play of the game, and his status will definitely impact the result of this game for a thin Madison Central. If he plays, I'll take the Indians. If he doesn't I'll take Great Crossing. Indians by 8. Frederick Douglass over Western Hills - Frederick Douglass comes into the region looking to make it back to EKU. Frederick Douglass came up just short last season in the finals of the regional tournament. They seem to be playing their best basketball with the dynamic duo of Simpson and Barrett. Western Hills can not be overlooked however. They played a tough schedule and picked up solid wins all season long. They have the size down low that could really cause problems for Douglass. I'll take Frederick Douglass by 5. Dunbar over Madison Southern - Coming off a big win in their district finals, Madison Southern looks to cement their place in the region with another statement win. Although their record is better, I'd say many people will predict Dunbar to beat the Eagles on their home court. The match-up of Nick Spalding vs. Jay Rose is worth the price of admission to this one. Both guards are strong and athletic and look to attack the rim. I'll take Dunbar by 10. Lexington Catholic over Madison Central Dunbar over Douglass Lexington Catholic over Dunbar 11th Region Rankings 1. Lexington Catholic – 26-5 2. Great Crossing 26-6 3. Madison Southern – 20-11 4. Frederick Douglass – 17-14 5. Henry Clay – 24-8 6. Madison Central – 20-11 7. Dunbar – 14-12 8. Western Hills – 15-14
  9. 11th Region District Review / Region Preview The District Championships started with a great game in the 44th as Madison Southern defeated Madison Central in the finals by 5 points. 10. 11th Region Week 12 Review After a great week of basketball with a ton of games in the area, it is finally tournament time! The results of those games are below, but as we all know the records do not matter anymore. Looking at the 41st district first hosted at Frankfort, Great Crossing enters as the favorite as they went 7-0 in the district in the regular season. However, their last meeting with Western Hills was just a two point victory. I look for these two teams to meet again in the finals with Western Hills finding a way to win this third meeting. The 42nd at Bryan Station may be the most competitive district in the 11th region. Henry Clay enters with a 7-1 record in the district, with their lone blemish being at Bryan Station in January. The matchup between Douglass and Bryan Station in the first semifinal should be a great match-up as the two teams split high scoring games in the regular season. I look for Henry Clay to defeat Douglass in the finals of this one. In the 43rd district at Lafayette, Lexington Catholic enters as the clear cut favorite with their 8-0 record in the district. This one sets up on paper for a third meeting between Dunbar and Lexington Catholic in the finals. Although Lexington Catholic won both meetings in the regular season, Dunbar has the talent to win if they play their best; I’ll take the Knights. In the 44th, Madison Central and Madison Southern ended up on opposite sides of the blind draw for the 12th time in the last 14 years. The two teams expect to face each other again unless Berea or Model can pull off a huge upset in the semi-finals. Madison Central won the first meeting in December by 15 points. I’ll take the Indians over the Eagles in the 44th. 11. Which teams in the state have a losing record, but still have a chance to make some noise in their district and possibly region tournaments? Thinking of teams with a tough schedule or a team that has dealt with some injuries/illness. In the 11th Region, Scott County has some good wins and close losses that give me reason to believe they will be a tough out in the 42nd. Who else?
  12. 11th Region Week 11 Review The basketball in Week 11 in the 11th Region did not disappoint. The biggest statement of the week was made by Madison Central as they went to Lexington Catholic on Tuesday and picked up a 14 point win, without their starting point guard. This victory vaulted the Indians to the number 1 spot just ahead of Lexington Catholic. No one would be surprised if these two teams meet at EKU in the semifinals or the finals. The best game of the week was played on Thursday, as Dunbar went to Henry Clay and left with a 3 point win in triple overtime. Dunbar went 2-0 on the week, moving them to number 5 in the standings. Looking ahead to Week 12, three match-ups to watch are Great Crossing at Scotty County on Monday, Lincoln County at Lexington Catholic on Tuesday, and Covington Catholic at Madison Central on Friday. Enjoy the last week of the regular season. February is setting up to be a great month of basketball! 13. 11th Region Week 10 Review Week 10 featured the fewest games of the season, with many teams only playing one time due to the ice that came through. Madison Central jumped ahead of Henry Clay in the standings after defeating the Blue Devils on Tuesday night. The Indians also defeated Frederick Douglass and a really good Perry County Central team from the 14th region to go 3-0 on the week. The other mover in the standings was Scott County. They defeated Bryan Station and Western Hills to move up to #9 in the standings. Lexington Catholic just kept winning with wins over Lafayette and Trinity. Great Crossing had a “Great” week going 4-0 with wins over Grant County, Seneca, Franklin County, and Frankfort Christian. Week 11 includes a slate filled with more district and city match-ups. My favorite games for the week are Madison Central at Lexington Catholic on Tuesday and Dunbar at Henry Clay on Thursday. Here’s to hoping all games get played this week. Just two more weeks of the regular season to get ready for the district tournaments! 15. 11th Region Week 9 Review Another week, another round of snow. Unfortunately, it looks like we may be in store for some more winter weather Wednesday to Friday. Enough about the weather, let’s talk about the action on the court. Don’t look now, but the defending 11th region champs, Madison Central, picked up 3 good wins over Lincoln County, Trinity, and Boyle County. As we move into February this team will be a tough out no matter who they play. Lexington Catholic just keeps winning as they defeated Tates Creek and Dunbar. Henry Clay picked up two wins as well, with a big win over Woodford County at the buzzer. Great Crossing had a solid week that ended with a very respectable 9 point loss to GRC. Frederick Douglass seems to be hitting their stride as they have won 4 out of their last 5. Week 10 has some great match-ups on the schedule. It is hard to believe we only have 3 weeks left in the regular season! 16. 11th Region Week 8 Review Although many games in Week 8 were cancelled or postponed due to the wintry weather, we still saw some great games in the 11th Region. Great Crossing started the week with a two point win over Western Hills, and finished the week with a great win over Jeffersontown. This helped them move up to number 3 in the rankings. Henry Clay picked up 3 20+ point wins this week with wins over Sayre, Lafayette, and Clay County. Although Lexington Catholic only played once this week, their win on the road at Dunbar further solidifies their place at the top of the rankings. The Bulldogs also dropped a game this week to Frederick Douglass, going 0-2 on the week. Finally, Madison Southern picked up a great two point win over Harlan County. The week ahead features some really good games on the schedule. Although it will be cold, it does not look the weather will impact any of these games. This week should help provide some clarity for the top teams in the region as we head into February and the last month of the season for some teams. 17. 11th Region Week 7 Review Three teams in the 11th Region went undefeated on the week. Lexington Catholic had a big week as they went 4-0, including a trip to Owensboro against some great competition to win the KY 2A State Tournament. Henry Clay picked up wins over Douglass, Dunbar, and Tates Creek to solidify their spot at number 2 in the rankings. Sayre went 3-0 as they defeated Frankfort, Berea, and LCA to win the 11th Region All A hosted by Model. Sayre will head to EKU in week 9 to represent the 11th Region. This is the time of year when the 11th region teams start to really compete against each other. It is hard to find another region in the state with the strength of the top 10 teams. Week 8 is loaded with some great match-ups. Check out the schedule below and get out this week to support the student-athletes!
