  5. 11th Region Tournament / Finals Preview The 11th Region Tournament came to an end on Tuesday night in a defensive battle between Henry Clay and Frederick Douglass. Frederick Douglass scored 4 points quickly to start the game, but the rest of the first half was all Blue Devils as they went to halftime with a 6 point lead. Douglass came out in the third quarter with a renewed sense of energy, which helped them gain a 1 point lead. Henry Clay battled back with the most important run of the game which gave them a 7 point lead at 32-25 heading to the 4th quarter. With 3:23 to go in the game Henry Clay maintained a 37-35 point lead. The Broncos had a couple opportunities to tie the game but their shots did not fall. In the end Henry Clay walked away with the nets, the trophy, and a trip to Rupp Arena as they won 41-36. Kanye Henderson, Aziel Blackwell, and Kyan Miller were all big for the Blue Devils in this game as they were selected to the All-Tournament Team. Salute to the Douglass Broncos and Coach Moseley for a great game, a district championship, and for playing their best basketball at the end of the year. The Blue Devils will face off against 1st Region Champion Murray. Like the Blue Devils, Murray also lost in their district championship before eventually winning their region. Murray also won the 1st Region All A, before eventually losing to All A State Champion Pikeville. Murray is led by Grant Whitaker and Trey Boggess. Looking at their team stats, they shoot the 3 really well. I like the Blue Devils in their first round match-up because of their defensive intensity on the perimeter. I’ll take Henry Clay by 10. Should they win, they will face the winner of Warren Central-Male in the second round. I look for Male to win in the first and second round, and advance to the Final 4. 11th Region Results Tuesday 1st Round: Henry Clay at Lexington Catholic - Henry Clay Won 70-58 Madison Central at Great Crossing – Great Crossing Won 61-55 (OT) Western Hills at Frederick Douglass – Frederick Douglass Won 92-39 Dunbar At Madison Southern – Madison Southern Won 54-46 Friday Semi-finals at EKU 6:15 - Henry Clay vs. Great Crossing – Henry Clay Won 47-43 8:15 - Frederick Douglass vs. Madison Southern- Douglass Won 60-54 Monday March 7th 11th Region Finals at EKU Henry Clay vs. Frederick Douglass – Henry Clay Won 41-36 11th Region Rankings 1. 6. 11th Region Tournament / Finals Preview The 11th Region Tournament tipped off Tuesday night with 3 great games. Frederick Douglass kept rolling as they blitzed Western Hills from the beginning and ended the night with a 43 point win. When this score was posted, it definitely made a statement to the other 3 teams remaining for the semifinals. In perhaps the most surprising win of the night, Henry Clay went into Lexington Catholic and picked up a huge win. The Blue Devils used a great 3rd quarter to pull away from the Knights. In the best game of the night, Great Crossing picked up a great win at home against Madison Central. As I mentioned last week, Madison Central’s point guard was injured in the last play of the district championship and did not play against Great Crossing. Vince Dawson was huge for Great Crossing in this first round match-up. In Richmond, Madison Southern defeated Dunbar in a very physical game with a lot of fouls in the second half. Madison Southern made their free throws and executed down the stretch to knock off the Bulldogs. On Friday night, Henry Clay defeated Great Crossing in a hard fought 4 point victory. The Blue Devils stretched their lead to 10 points in the 4th quarter, but Great Crossing was able to cut in the lead and had a chance to tie the game with under a minute to play but could not pull it off. In the second semifinal, Douglass jumped out to an 11 point lead in the first half before Madison Southern chipped away and eventually took the lead at halftime. The Eagles were in control of the game heading to the 4th quarter, but Frederick Douglass turned up the defensive intensity and finally got some points in transition to take the lead. That made it 7 victories in a row for Frederick Douglass, including their victory over the Blue Devils in the district championship. Monday’s night game should be a great game at EKU. I’ll take the Blue Devils to win by 6, 53-47. I’ll be there Monday night, hope to see you there! 11th Region Results Tuesday 1st Round: Henry Clay at Lexington Catholic - Henry Clay Won 70-58 Madison Central at Great Crossing – Great Crossing Won 61-55 (OT) Western Hills at Frederick Douglass – Frederick Douglass Won 92-39 Dunbar At Madison Southern – Madison Southern Won 54-46 Friday Semi-finals at EKU 6:15 - Henry Clay vs. Great Crossing – Henry Clay Won 47-43 8:15 - Frederick Douglass vs. Madison Southern- Frederick Douglass Won 60-54 Monday March 7th 11th Region Finals at EKU – 7:00 Henry Clay vs. Frederick Douglass 11th Region Rankings 1.
