QB Immersion Session for QBs and all coaches in program, youth through HS, today at Grant County w/ my good friend, Coach David Gay. 30 minutes of drill presentation 1 hour instruction 30 minutes Identifying & Attacking Coverages 1 hour instruction Kids and coaches both did a good job! #4thAnd40

Taylor County made an excellent hire in the offseason by adding DC, William Harris. William played at CU for Perry Thomas. When he and I worked together at Mercer , he did a great job, first with our frosh/JV program as head coach, then in 2021, was our defensive coordinator. Very creative, works extremely hard, super intelligent, and great relationships with the kids. When he was an assistant for me, he constantly wanted more work and more feedback on his work. Sometimes I had to tell him..."What you have here is great! Relax! I have to get to work on the offense and you are a million miles ahead of me!" Lol The guy is a buzzsaw who absolutely loves kids and football, 24/7. I've been around some excellent coaches in a lifetime of HS football. William would rank among the best of the best. He will make an excellent head coach in the future. His impact at Taylor County will be both massive and positive. A game changer for the Cardinals. He is that good. #FindAWayToWin

I sure do appreciate all of the kind words. A few random thoughts.... 1- I have enjoyed all the speculation & comments over the last few weeks. 🙂 2- Have met some awful nice people at some different schools over the past year. Very thankful for those experiences. 3- Coach Gruneisen said one time that coaching HS football is the greatest profession. It was good for me to take a step back and not take so much for granted. I am very thankful to be in this role once again. 4- Thankful for Kevin Wallace giving me a place to land for a year. Yes, his football is top notch. His culture, leadership, and team chemistry are elite. One of the best. Those guys were super to me during a tough time and always made me feel welcome. Players and coaches. I enjoyed scouting great teams for them, prepping reports/potential gameplans, and lived for Mondays to go watch the Tigers get ready for another week of football. The X is special. 5- The podcast will continue. Chuck and I really enjoy it. Will make Mondays super busy, but we enjoy it too much and our listeners love it too much to give up. When they called me back for a 2nd interview, for lack of a better term, I interviewed them... 15 questions. I liked their answers alot. As I get older, the tough part to navigate is wanting to coach football and have a team, but also do what is best for my family. Fortunately, that has happened at Anderson County and I am very thankful. As I have said in the past, I really appreciate @theguru. He works hard to keep this site first class. Time to get back to work, but wanted to share this info with a tremendous group of people that love KY HS Football! #FindAWayToWin

Had this pop up on twitter... thought the BGPreps crowd would enjoy. These two sets have been really good to us. Top set evolved into a great 3rd & Long formation. You can blame Chuck Smith & Jeff Hester for the top set. They had an awful good defense in 2017. This offered some good solutions early in the game. The game picture is from 2020. Bottom formation. Substituted Guards for the Tackles so they could run and move better in space. Screen to the WR who is circled vs. Cover 0. TD Last thing… the two “Guards” are not necessarily Guards. They are your two best offensive linemen. Make the defense uncomfortable. Create matchups up front that give you the best chance to win. #FindAWayToWin

Most of the really good coaches I've been around, the external pressure is minimal compared to the internal pressure they put on themselves. Some coaches laugh about it. Some want to fight. But, at the end of the day, nothing like their own personal expectations... which sometimes can approach unrealistic. I wish Coach Volker and the Tigers all the best!

As much as anyone, not a fan when a good tradition comes to an end. But, Jimmie Reed, Clay Clevenger, & Jim McKee worked like dogs to get the KFCA Mr. Football Award established and to do a good job with it. Going forward, believe this will work out well and our KFCA members will do a good job in selecting Mr. Football.

We played Highlands that night in the snow. Since we were further north, had to be colder in Fort Thomas. 🙂

Your strategy got me a little bit, but a great example of why we script our plays. Part of me wanted to force the ball to Chris (Lofton). Part of me thought it best not to overreact and stay with the game plan. Those runs scripted for Dustin(Grutza)... should have got to them quicker. But, those were prepped and planned going into the game. Didn't want to start the game that way. QB run game in November... needs to be ready, but if you can keep a lid on it, try to protect his body, especially in week 13. Not sure, but I think Dustin may have had 6 TD's rushing that night... maybe 3 or 4 in the 4th. We had an excellent defense that year. Earlier at Putnam, my ILB ripped the wristband off your QB's arm and threw to me on the sideline. I loved it, but told him, don't ever do that again. Your offense was backed up in the endzone and your student section was getting after our guys. The atmosphere at Putnam is special. Love that place. Always enjoyed dressing in that old visitor's lockerroom with the ancient plays drawn on the brick. Chris had over 100 yards receiving in the first quarter at Putnam. After that, I believe you used your FS to help with him, but I am not sure. You may have also widened your OLB. We both played that 4-4 and your FS was like an extra ILB. Very physical and really came down hard vs. run. Side note... the night I gave Dustin his shoulder pads, he was upset with me. He wore the same pad as our linebackers and defensive line. He also started DB. I told him, you will figure out how to throw in them. But, if I put you in a traditional QB pad, playing defense and as much as we ran him, he would have got hurt. And, the reality is that we were not even close to the same team without him. His career, he threw for over 8,000 yards. I think he adjusted ok to the heavy pads. 🙂

That was a tough Ashland team. Love Leon Hart. Wonderful man, friend. Excellent football coach. They were beating us going into the 4th quarter in the region championship. That might have been the best 4th quarter ever, that we had a team play. That was the loudest game I ever coached in. May have been the snow, but not near as loud at Highlands the next week.

We would do... 1- scripted plays for the following situations: 3rd/4th & short; 3rd/4th & long; 3rd & medium; redzone; goalline; coming out, etc. 2-analytics could tell us on 1st down if we were in 4 down territory or 3 down 3-analtytics could recommend go for it or punt on 4th down. Some times, the difference was minimal in terms of predicted game winning percentage 4-ultimately would go with my gut. All of those were tools. But, it is on me and our staff to make the correct and best decision. No hiding behind analytics after a loss. Guys that do that do not need to be a head coach. Hope this answers your question. The analytics is a great tool, but it is not a decision maker and it is not the head coach. Ultimately, the head coach must own everything that happens in their program. Mistakes will happen and problems will arise for everyone(even Saban & Belichick).. it is all in how they are addressed and handled.
