In tournament action, there is an independent third party (which happens to be the official scorer) who handles the pitch count. It is the responsibility of the pitcher's coach to verify how many pitches are remaining. The Designated Pitch County Recorder does not have to speak up with pitch counts unless asked by one of the coaches. I have seen some of them provide this as a courtesy with a running total between innings (for example, at Montgomery County). However, it is not mandatory.

Yep I hope that other coaches do not push the envelope though.

The KHSAA ruled to keep the win for University Heights in the District Semifinal. Their head coach was suspended for the District Final. It is all in the tweets from the link. Precedent set?

IMO, there will be more pitch count infractions similar to this one in a 3-day Regional Tournament.

KHSAA would not rule on the pitch count protest until after the game was over. If the pitcher was over by a couple of pitches in a prior game, would the KHSAA stand firm with the forfeiture? I hope so. It will be interesting to see if this happens in the first year of the pitch count rule.

In the Regional Tournaments, there might be scenarios develop where a player pitched 30 to 40 pitches on the day before and the coach will pitch him on the next day and take his chances with the consequences. However, I would not take that risk!

Andrew Dyer pitched a great game for Montgomery County. He had 10 strikeouts over the 2-day contest. He gave up only 4 hits over 10 innings, too. Paul Wise and Dillon Day were the hitting leaders for the Indians.

I listened to the game on the radio. The double play you mentioned was 6-4-3; however, it was nowhere near conventional. According to Jim Forrest, Gage Hughes was at shortstop and he couldn't make the play although he touched the ball with his glove. It continued towards 2nd base where Kyle Gammon grabbed it and instantaneously stepped on the bag at 2nd. He then threw it to 1st base to complete the double play.

The Cardinals (20-8, 5-0) wrap up the #1 position in the upcoming 40th District Tournament at Montgomery County. GRC will face Paris and Bourbon County will play Montgomery County.
