For the last 5 years, the All-A Champ has also won their KHSAA Region and gone to State: 2015 Holy Cross Won All-A, Won Region 2014 Glasgow Won All-A, Won Region 2013 Owensboro Catholic Won All-A, Won Region 2012 Walton-Verona Won All-A, Won Region 2011 Owensboro Catholic Won All-A, Won Region Look at that. Do you know how many big schools they had to defeat to win their region? Competing on a big stage isn't a problem. Start seeing the All-A for what it is. They tournament clearly no longer serves it's original purpose. be bolder and change it... change the enrollment requirement. make your own districts and regions instead of copying the KHSAA. put all the private schools in 1 region, and make the other 15 all public

Couldn't agree more. Middle school is a waste of time for good players. Everyone earns their spot in HS. What's the difference if you get beat out by an 8th grader or a Junior? You still got beat out. You are guaranteed nothing. Get better.

I think many do it the other way around. Where's the best team/Where will I be able to play, with academics being the smaller part of the pie. Just look at the distances that private schools draw from, or the rise of out-of-district players going to public schools. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with that, because in some places, you can have both - or at least better your situation in both vs your closest school. But saying it's all about academics and no one is picking the school because of the sports is just being naive. The players, the real-deal players in any sport, are going to have athletics first on the list.

You have to build up enough quality wins during the regular season to even make the Regional Bid Tourney, there's a seeding system. Only 24 or 28 (depending on age group) teams get in. You don't just "show up". In AAU you can just "show up" Really? Like Water. They give out 2 national and 3 American bids to a 24 team bracket. That's 20% of entrants who get a bid, and that's on top of having to qualify to even be there. 100% of the people who mail in their entry form get into the AAU National Championship. You could play no matches all season and still go to AAU Nationals as long as your check clears. Which one seems more like water to you? I don't know. But if it's not a lot, then you're proving my point on how competitive USA volleyball is. Name any NKJV team that's playing OPEN at a USA National Qualifier. Wrong again. Look it up. It goes.. OPEN NATIONAL USA AMERICAN PATRIOT And neither does Sports Performance, Milwaukee Sting, or any of the other top JVA clubs. So your point is what? It's easier to get into USA Nationals than AAU? I think even the JVA Board of Directors would disagree with that.

You have to finish 1,2 or 3 in a qualifying tournament to go to USA nationals.... You know how you get into the AAU tourney? Mail in a check. Which one is more of an achievement?

That's a lot of talent on the floor the past 5 seasons. I think they could have won any of these games. The NCC program clearly has a wall in front of them - how do they break through?

Well, the perennial Catholic schools are at the high end of the enrollment qualification, so I'm guessing the feeling is the tournament sells more tickets because these schools are larger, have more of a fan base, and likely travel better. So there would less $$ for the tourney. Which shouldn't be a problem because I've been told over and over it's not about making the money, but giving small school players and teams exposure they'll never get anywhere else - like for example at the KHSAA Regional tournament, or the KHSAA State Tournament. I also imagine some would say you can no longer call it a "State Championship" since you have eliminated the Catholic schools. Wait? You mean when a team wins a privately organized tournament that doesn't include all the schools in the state as laid out by the current classification of the official governing body, you can no longer call them "State Champions"? Imagine that.

To imply that NKJV's 16-1's are on the same level as NKYVC's 16-1's is laughable, and proves you really don't know what you are talking about. I'm basing my opinion based on the facts. Let's take a look. The Central Zone invite was the only tourney so far where both NKJV 16-1 and NKYVC 16-1 both played in OPEN, the highest level, so we are comparing apples to apples and common opponents. NKJV went 1-5 at CZ. They won 1 match. NKYVC went 5-2. NKJV lost 0-2 to Pineapple, NKYVC beat Pineapple 2-1. NKJV lost to Asics KIVA 16 White 0-2, NKYVC beat them TWICE 2-0, 2-0 both times. So against common opponents in the same division, NKJV was 0-2, NKYVC was 3-0. This past weekend at Bluegrass, NKYVC again played in OPEN and finished 5th. NKJV played down a division in Premiere and finished 11th. For the big qualifier coming up in Indy, NKYVC is registered for Open. NKJV has signed up to play down in the USA Division, which is 2 below OPEN. Even their own club doesn't think they are an open team. And yes, there is a big separation. You're just not seeing it.

Interesting. I don't know if it's about money. I've been told it's not (but again what else would they say?) Do you think the tournament would make more or less money if they invited only public schools? How would that decision affect ticket sales? If the feeling is some private schools travel better and have larger fan bases, then I wonder if they are keeping the enrollment right where it needs to be so certain private schools are in it.

I know this..If her team was very good they would be playing in OPEN, because that's where the very good teams are, especially in large national tournaments and qualifiers. Finishing in the middle of the pack in a lower division, and behind 3 other NKY club teams in the same age group, tells me maybe you know not what you speak of. If you go to the club websites, you can see which NKY HS players are on which club team, and get a sense of which HS team will have a good team this fall. There's really no way to compare finishes between levels. A low finish in the OPEN level is still higher than the first place team at the PREMIERE level. I'm no fan of the All-A...especially for a team like this. They could have skipped that tourney and used the time to play tougher teams in Ohio. But to their credit, I seem to recall the All-A post game comments from NCC players were - and I'm paraphrasing - that it was a nice win but the goal is to win the State Championship in March. So even the players realized the All-A for what it is...and the team goal was to win the real State Championship.

I'm been told over and over that the All-A is there for small schools to compete and have their day in the sun with their own little "State Championship". Problem is, when small schools are able to win their Region and go to the actual, real State Championship (almost happened in both boys and girls for the 9th) the argument doesn't hold up. You can't have it both ways, small schools. Maybe the enrollment for the All-A needs to be lowered. Or maybe it should be limited to small Public schools only, who I'm guessing it was designed for in the first place (Silver Grove, Dayton, Bellevue come to mind.) Either way will stretch the already thin "State Champs" claim even thinner.

First, it's girls basketball - so I don't know if any window ever closes. That said, Reg final 3 years ago, and now 2 reg semi exits in a row. Sure, everyone will take that season - but I think with their talent and recent success the feeling was this year would be the one to win the region. Now, it's down to one last season to get it done for a talented group next year. I'll pick them to win it next year in a 9th that's down from this year, but my confidence was higher this year.

It's the age old question - does an earlier than expected playoff exit overshadow a successful season? Expectations were high for this team - were they too high? They were talented and highly ranked and by any measure had a successful regular season. Yes, many schools would have killed to have their season, but then again, once you've tasted success, the expectations and goals are much higher.

There's a big club tournament this weekend in Louisville, with girls from many NKY High School teams playing in it, and even against each other, on their club teams. Some of the schools the players are from: Beechwood Bishop Brossart Boone Co Bracken Co Campbell County Conner Cooper Covington Latin Dixie Heights Highlands Holy Cross Lloyd Newport Central Catholic Notre Dame Academy Ryle Saint Henry Scott Simon Kenton Walton-Verona Villa Madonna Academy (Any more?) Within the tournament, there are levels of play, with "open" being the highest - and not everyone from these NKY High Schools plays at that level. Still, a good chance to see who the potential stars on the court will be this fall in NKY.
