  1. I can remember another fall night a few years ago when LC had no prayer against St X, and wound up winning the game on a field goal by our third line kicker. Mike G took an oath that that would not happen again and it hasn't. Still, they have to play the game before they can count it, and anything can happen. Among the best values of playing a program like St X (and we have Trinity at end of season too) is that it gives us a measurement of where we are, as a whole and departmently. I'm giving our kids credit for putting out a heck of an effort, but I think St X's resources will overwhelm us in the end. I would really enjoy giving Mike and Bill Glaser a bad case of stomach distress on the way home though.
  2. The CC student body will be worth the price of admission. I think both teams showed some green legs and hands last weekend. LC finally settled down in the 4th Q (and WC was running out of gas-only played about 15-18 players) and ran away with it. LC's got some real raw talent but they need to settle down and play consistant...we've got a schedule that will provide a lot of opportunity for that to happen...I'd say LC by three scores in this one
  3. Whitley Co had a lot of guys cramping up in 3rd and 4th quarters and they don't play a lot of guys...22 and 34 were out there trying to run plays and couldn't bend their legs...until they can get more guys into the game, it's gonna be tough, but they're a game bunch...the 12-2 record is for real. We had some less than great plays in the first half that led to a significant deficit heading into the fourth quarter. I asked Coach Letton if he told the kids there was no fifth quarter, so they'd better get busy in the fourth. They did...but we're going to have to have more consistancy to deal with our schedule ahead...ok start though
  4. They WILL get out of the gate quick...LC has some real experience and talent at the skill spots...defense will be powerful, but they better be with the schedule ahead. The ace is they still have one of the best coachs in the state and he loves defense...they'll be alright.
  5. Explain to me how the "entrance exam" at LCHS works, along with how the "academic scholarships" are determined and awarded.
  6. I've said for years that parents are legally and morally responsible for their children up to age 18. They should have the right and responsibility to place their children anywhere they want for whatever reasons they deem appropriate. I think this is the basis for the legislators kicking down Proposition 2 (an attempt to restrict a student's participation in the high school his/her parents selected. This doesn't pass the legal smell test.
  7. He has both, sandwiched between thickly sliced bias bread This is classic Wilson Sears
  8. Although they'll be running over my alma mater, I see the Knights running on all cylinders for this one-should be over by halftime. The next four games will be tougher, but Letton has preped this bunch well for playoff mode. See you in Louisville
  9. The only "mal-lox moment" Sears is suffering occurs when the higher ups disagree with HIS vision of what the rules should be...he's been lead dog in any attempt to rid the state of high school parochial competition ONLY because he and his "PS puritans" can't find a way to compete with them. He really demonstrated his total lack of class when the higher review boards in the process rejected his concept of "fairness" in the doomed prop 2.. The news of his impending retirement is some of the best news Kentucky's prep athletics has to look forward to for 08-09.
  10. The big difference between high school and college is crossing that magic barrier line known as "18". Up to that point, the parents are legally responsible for the youth, and decisions regarding what they feel is "best" for him/her and future. After "18" (college or whatever), the youth may assume the responsibility of those decisions. Even state funded public universities receive athletic funding, from state to state, in a variety of ways. UK's athletics survive on the back of the Blue/White fund, not the legislature.
  11. You very obviously do not know what you're talking about-we can't address it here for the same reasons the names of public school kids getting free books, fees and breakfast/lunch can't be divulged. Rest assured, there are many, many "poor kids" who GO to the private school, do not participate in sports activities, and receive financial assistance (determined by a process considerably more objective and reliable than bringing home a sheet of paper for Mom or Dad to sign). And guess what else: the assistance provided is not your Mom/Dad's tax money.
  12. If the public superintendents are genuinly interested in a symbolic move to support their position, they need to have and display the intestinal fortitude to act: they need to withhold their dues from the KHSAA and not participate in any athletic functions of that organization. After all, the KHSAA is the entity which refused their desire to split the playoffs, and the state legislature is the entity which denied their desire to determine "feeder systems" and thus student enrollment/athletic participation. I would think this might be a much worthier example to teach the school children subject to their authority. And, who knows, some superintendents might adopt this approach (as opposed to a "boycott" ((of schools that we can't beat)) ), as soon as they recover from their testicular implant surgery.
  13. Why not just increase the school tax from KHSAA to all the schools by 50% for one year, use the money to give every school in the state that hasn't won a state title a "Championship Participation Trophy", and then move on with what is already a pretty good system of high school athletic competition.
  14. We just need to remember what got us where we are. We've got good personnel for next year, a challenging schedule, and a solid head coach who knows what the whole game is about. We'll be ready.
  15. They don't need anyone to match up with Hopson. Besides, he's going to be plenty busy just keeping up.
  16. It has amazed me for years how UK has overlooked local talent. It remains to be seen Billy G's approach, but Tubby was something of a mystery. I agree that Taylor Stewart would be a terrific catch. I've watched this kid for five years now and I see dramatic improvement in every phase of his game, plus he's got nice size and is a great student. He doesn't fit the mold of a "McDonalds All American" who stars in national dunk contests, but he's a heck of a good bball player. I'll be interested to see if Billy G does look at him.
  17. The public schools have been involved in providing financial aid for several years in the form of breakfast, lunch, and books/fees subsidies. Before you bend out of shape over amount comparisions, I did a little research a few years ago. In 2004, the five public high schools in Fayette Co provided $1,400,000 worth of free/reduced breakfast, lunch, and books/fees. The argument always follows that this is not financial aid, but to get this, the student must bring a form home, the parents fill it out and sign it and return it to the school. On the form, to qualify for the benefit, the family must meet an income test. If this is not financial aid, what is it?
  18. I still have a hiccup in the conversation whenever the phrase "cheating and recruiting for advantage . . ." enters the issue. This is a true "grey area" because we are talking about 12-17,18 year old children. Parents have the legal and moral responsibility to make what they feel are the best decisions for their children's present and future. I've said for years that the KHSAA's arm of control over a family's exercising those decisions is going to be a bone of contention. The cardinal rule is "parents are going to send their children to whatever school they want to for the reasons they want to." KHSAA making and enforcing rules that interfere with that premise are going to be subject to everything from mild scorn to violent rampages. The idea of restricting participation in high school activities because of where the child attended middle school is an interference in parental authority and responsibility. To imply that this decision process is "cheating" is, I think, a fight waiting for somewhere to happen.
  19. LC does not have an "admissions test" qualifying students for admittance...they do conduct a "placement exam" to help determine on what academic level the prospective student (not athlete) is best prepared and then suggest a curriculum for he and his parents to consider. The school places no limits on enrollment (especially since successful completion of the second floor a few years ago)...back in the early 90's the school's student population was around 300 and is pushing 900 now.
  20. It's just that Wilson Sears is the field general of the cheerleading squad promoting the "split" idea. Come to think of it, a cartoon of Willy in a cheerleader skirt is not a bad idea.
  21. I think most public schools throughout the state have these agreements. I know that if you live in Woodford Co and want your child to attend Dunbar, all you need is for PLD to have the available space and pay the tuition. Scott Co and Fayette have the same agreement as does Bourbon Co, and so on and the magic is that the student's family doesn't even have to relocate. To suggest that this doesn't facilitate recruiting activities would be naive (and the fact that this is allowed via Bylaw 10-recruiting, etc., asks how seriously KHSAA wants to outlaw recruiting problems).
  22. An incredibly refreshing and point-on accurate point of view. I'd be in favor of putting this guy in charge of the state school board.
