I think Tilghman is rated a touch too high and Marshall a touch too low. Calloway is the favorite for sure but if I had to bet they will play Marshall 4 times, including District and Regional finals, this year and they will be tight games. McCracken would be the slight favorite over Tilghman in the 2nd District race also. Just no way you can rate Tilghman above McCracken at this point. McCracken beat them handily twice last year and even though they lost some good players they have enough back to be rated the favorite. I also think Mayfield is slightly underrated here. In my opinion they will win the 3rd District this year over Graves. Graves was decimated by graduation. Finally initially I would probably rate Ballard ahead of Fulton County in the 10 slot. As far as players go I think the top 6 are really solid and I would have a difficult time arguing with that at all. I think Jason Armstrong for McCracken is the most underrated player in the region and should be in that top 10 somewhere. He will be asked to score more this year, he is a load inside, and he may be the best defensive player in the region. Not sure who of the last 4 I would replace though. Probably Hart at this point although that could change. I think Conner Wagner is also slightly underrated here. If he was on a less talented team he would score a lot more. He can play. I would put him 7th. But really these are small things. This was a solid job by Mr. Waters.

Agree with this assessment. The top four teams will likely be Calloway, Marshall, McCracken and Tilghman with Murray, Graves and Mayfield in the second tier. Graves had a several year run of a lot of talent and experience. Now they rebuild. Vogt is huge and has good shot blocking instincts but from at least what I saw last year may get pushed around until he bulks up.

Southaven's Maxpreps national computer ranking would place them 5th in Kentucky just behind Bowling Green. This a really impressive win for McCracken. McCracken is 11th fwiw...

Calloway has a very strong class of seniors who have been Regional contenders the last two years and at least on paper have to be the favorite. As sophomores they lost in the Region final to Graves and last year they lost in the first round to eventual winner McCracken. Parker Adams is likely the pre-season region player of the year and Skyler Hunter has committed to play at Colgate. Also have a couple of good guards. Would seemingly be their year. If they are to be knocked off I think it would most likely be Marshall County who have most of their team back from the Region final OT loss to McCracken. They did lose Austin Rentfrow who was arguably the best player in the region last year. As far as McCracken it is hard to say. I think they will be good but they lost a lot to graduation. They have Caleb Stonecipher back and he will score a ton. They also have Center Jason Armstrong back. He can guard any position on the floor and is a load inside. The key may be a couple of transfers. Cole Smith from CCA can score and they added a point guard from South Fulton to the mix. I would put them 3rd at least to start the year.

If ranking Region 1 teams for the coming year Graves would not be among the top 2. They lost almost everything. Pre-season Region 1 for most people would probably go Calloway, Marshall, McCracken, Tilghman, and possibly Murray ahead of Graves.

I actually think Stunson has potential to be pretty good. Obviously, this game story wasn't his best work but by just reading what he has written so far and seeing Twitter stuff I think he actually is interested in High School sports. That's a start. Not sure about Horne and never felt that way about the other guy last year who was obviously dying to get out of here. I'll reserve judgment a little while. Truthfully all people from McCracken County have heard for years and years when it comes to football is Tilghman and Mayfield and rightfully so. Can't blame them from enjoying the spotlight. Also easy to understand why Tilghman and Mayfield don't like it.

In fairness, McCracken has done quite a bit to warrant that coverage over the last year but I get your point.

I am no Paducah Sun apologist, but I wonder if that headline was written for deadline time while McCracken was dominating the game. Story inserted later and headline not changed. Just a theory.

Look I give all kinds of props to the job the Mayfield coaches do and did last night. But that sideline was out of control at times. It was a terribly officiated game for sure and McCracken did plenty of griping also but just no comparison. I have never seen a coach spend as much time on the field as Morris did last night. Should have been flagged multiple times.

I'm not sure. Would like to see it again. Mayfield got a lot of penetration but they had been on extra points all night. My uneducated guess is low kick. Truthfully McCracken should have kept the ball in the middle of the field on the play before and OT may have never happened.

Glad you brought that up. I really thought the way the game was played in the 2nd half that this was a tactical error by Mayfield. McCracken literally could not stop the Cardinals at all. And with Jones out for McCracken it was a matter of time before they were stopped. Now that completely discounts the fatigue factor but Mayfield was the stronger team down the stretch. Just felt like an unnecessary risk to me.

The officials literally iced the kicker on what would have been the game winner at the end of regulation. I still have no idea what they were doing.

What a game. One of the best high school games I have seen. I definitely underestimated Mayfield and overestimated McCracken. Some observations. Mayfield's number 22 was the best player on the field. He runs as hard for a small guy as you can see. McCracken simply could not tackle him in the second half. McCracken's tackling overall was not good. So many missed tackles. Pooh Jones is an absolute stud and if he is seriously hurt it is a huge blow. Not only does he run the ball well, but he is a dominant defender also. Mayfield is as well coached a team as you will ever see. What a fantastic job the coaches for Mayfield did adjusting at halftime. I will say I think Mayfield's head coach spent as much time on the field yelling at the referees as many of the players did playing. I was taken aback a little by how active the Mayfield coaches were with the referees. And that referee crew was an embarrassment and were bad both ways. The head referee lost control of the game in the second half. Finally, McCracken has gone 2 and 0 against two historical programs and it really doesn't feel like they have played as well offensively yet as they did last season. The QB switching steals rhythm in my opinion. They need to pick a QB and stick with it in the coming weeks. I thought some really questionable coaching decisions by the McCracken staff made the game closer than it probably should have been but in the end they made the plays. Again what a game.

The old saying is if you have 2 Quarterbacks then you really have none. This strategy for the season feels like a mistake to me. But what do I know.

McCracken by at least 2 touchdowns. Same prediction as I made for Tilghman game. Once again, too big, too deep, too fast and too athletic.

Definitely understand that Hughes will not play QB in college. Just saying that the passing attack will have to be much better come 6A playoff time. Jones simply overpowered Tilghman tonight and he will be able to do that to most Western Kentucky teams. But he won't do that as much to Henderson or other 6A playoff teams. Long time to get that corrected though.

As expected McCracken just too big, too deep, too fast for Tilghman. Couple of things of note to me from that game. First, I understand Tilghman's coach is new and needs time to put in his system, but it doesn't seem to fit Tilghman's personnel. Will be interesting to see how it unfolds not only this year but going forward. Will also be interesting to see if a run first offense can keep players from transferring out to the more wide open McCracken offense over time. Second thing is McCracken's passing game didn't look nearly as sharp as last season. I realize they are trying to work Hughes in at receiver some to prepare him for college football but the shuffling made the passing game look rusty. Of course for both teams this is only the first game. Long way to go.
