Casey County 77 Russell County 69 OT
First replied to KySniper's topic in KY Boys Basketball (High School)
Casey seems to be playing much better of late. -
Glad you appreciated the House of Cards reference! I don't know whose flyers I've yet to see, but is there anything we didn't already know about the 3 candidates that are running for office? I'd say most sports fans in KY already know as much about them as they do Trump and Clinton. Sorry, it's a little over the top for my taste.

I'd like to see Williams win it. He plays for an All A school; he has a tremendous work ethic; he plays hard all the time; and he has always seemed pretty humble. I also like the strong academics though I understand that shouldn't be a factor. Now for the complaint. Are we seriously to the point that we make flyers to campaign for these kids' run for Mr. Basketball? I could go on and on and on and on about this. It is ludicrous, sad and funny all at the same time. Francis Underwood would be proud!

You obviously get to see Wayne County play a whole lot more than I do but I have always thought that Stearns is Wayne's best player. Plays smart and is a good all-around player. Very efficient. -
I have no problem with your position as it relates to Mr. Basketball. That's not my contention. I even started by saying there are 2 guys head and shoulders above the rest. I took issue with the statement that he wasn't All-State worthy. If you take everything in context with what this kid has done in the past and then what he's doing to get his team where it is this year, I just can't see that.

Faulkner is a tremendous player, no question. I'm not comparing him to his own teammate. Let's be honest. Hager never had the "hype" of a Goodin or Williams. It has always been theirs to lose. They are both elite players and are on another level compared to other seniors in this state. That said, whatever hype Hager had was based on his role as the leading SCORER the last 3 seasons at Mercer. Now that he's not doing that... This year, he finds himself surrounded by 3 other kids that would be leading scorers on most high school teams. What's being asked of him this year is completely different than in the past. He's actually shooting less than 10 times per game, but shooting in the upper 50's % and mid 70's on FT's. He controls the game for his team; is the vocal leader; averages more assists; and draws the toughest defensive assignment the second half of most games. He is doing whatever it takes to get the W, and his team is 24-0 today. Most times, people see stats, scoring in particular. He could be averaging 23 PPG if that were his goal, but his team would suffer. Leaders lead, which requires personal sacrifice. This kid doesn't care about personal accolades, which is rare to say the least. His priority is winning.

Mercer County 69 Pulaski County 58

I suppose they are trying to become eligible for next season? Having actually played for Pulaski will not help their cause. -

It was a solid 10 point game For much of the second quarter, but Pulaski banked in a 3 with about 2 seconds left to cut it to 7 at halftime. Mercer came out strong in the third, pushing the lead to as high as 21. It stayed in the 15-20 range for much of the second half. Pulaski has nice guards along with a talented interior presence in Sylvester. I really liked their team's demeanor. They played disciplined, unselfish basketball and moved the ball very well. -

That's my answer every year. Same for college. In a one and out format, it's very difficult for the best team to win it. The NBA's format mitigates that issue. -
Cordia 62 Murray 45 (All "A" State Finals)
First replied to Lawnboy13's topic in KY Boys Basketball (High School)
Cordia has more players eligible now and seem to be figuring it out - just like that. They are playing at a high level now. Beating Murray by that margin is impressive. I'm looking forward to their game vs Mercer. -
Mercer County 85 East Jessamine 44

James finished with 26. East packed in the 2-3 zone. When that happens, the team knows who to look for. Kid can shoot a little. -

Did Boone play for Murray? Has he been healthy this year? Haven't heard anything about him. The few times I've seen him he seemed like a really nice player. -

Mercer County 83 West Jessamine 79
First replied to PurplePride92's topic in KY Boys Basketball (High School)
West Jessamine is an average to above average team, with a great coach, that wanted revenge after having been embarrassed earlier by a district rival. Mercer came to play like they were 44 points better than their foe. That pretty much explains why it played out the way it did. Mercer was extremely fortunate to get out of there with a W. I think this will help Mercer in the long run, including if they play West again in the district championship. I don't think they'll approach that game the same way. -
Mercer County 70 Boyle County 51
First replied to Randy Parker's topic in KY Boys Basketball (High School)
They have faced athleticism this year but not an athletic team that's also very good. But, this team is at its best playing up-tempo. Most athletic high school teams like to play up-tempo to maximum their advantage. Point being that I think Mercer would fare better against a really good team that is athletic than a really good team that plays a methodical style. For what it's worth, they played several athletic teams over the summer and fared very well. -
How tall is Hollingsworth?
-
They beat Henry Clay by 18; lost to Trinity by double digits; and Henry Clay won at Trinity by double figures. Granted, they also have beaten Trinity, but lost to Madison Central. I think they are one of the top 3 teams, no question. But my point above is along the lines of what PP said. I would have very little confidence in predicting the eventual state champion. There are simply too many variables in a one and out format.

I don't doubt that, but anyone that says they predicted a 30 point margin is not telling the truth. 15 wouldn't have surprised me, but 30? Wow.
