Anderson faces a 3rd & 5 and opt to do another run that goes for three yards. The quarter ends with Anderson facing a 4th & 2. First Quarter: Danville 14, Anderson County 7

Anderson County's kickoff return doesn't go many places and they will start on their own 26. Fullback run goes for four yards to start Anderson's drive. Playaction pass that is deep gets a first down to the 40 yard line of the Bearcats.

Ads line up in the I-formation and in a battle of size on the lines, Meaux runs up the middle but is stopped at the 3 yard line. Second and goal (3;40 to play in the quarter) sees a pitch to Meaux and he stretches over some bodies and scores his second touchdown of the game. Garcia adds another extra point. Danville takes the lead 14-7 in the 1st Quarter

Cruver now passes to Peters again for another first down to the Anderson 5.

Cruver works out of an empty backfield and runs a draw but Anderson snuffs it out after a few yards. Cruver rolls out on second down and throws it to the right side for a first down to Mylan Peters (sophomore). Ball now at the Anderson 17.

Anderson takes their kickoff return about 20ish yards after receiving but there is a fumble and Chandon Carter (senior) recovers and takes it to the Anderson 28 before getting tackled.

Dillon Cruver (sophomore) throws to Cam Peters (junior) to start the next drive for five yards. The Ads follow with a misdirection play to Meaux, who goes to the house for a 53-yard touchdown. Game is tied 7-7 with a little less than 6:00 left in the first quarter

Anderson onside kicks but the Admirals barely recover it. Coach Buchanan taking some risks early, so I appreciate the strategy! 6:12 is left in the quarter. Ads start on their own 42.

Anderson does a HB toss to the left and the rusher goes to the house. They definitely seem to have more energy at the moment than the Ads. Extra point is good. Anderson County leads 7-0 in the first quarter

Anderson runs for five yards on their first carry. Another run gets a first down to the Admirals 49. (Sorry for the lack of Anderson player names but the radio call isn't giving them to me, so I intend no disrespect!) Anderson starts their next set of downs with a QB scramble for a loss but the QB is hit out of bounds so a personal foul advances the ball 15 yards. Anderson has a busted play and fumbles on 1st down for a four yard loss. Fullback run sees Anderson get 7 yards as they are pushing the Ads around early. On 3rd and 4 in Admiral territory (31 yard line), Anderson runs misdirection and it gets close for a 4th and inches. On 4th and inches with 6:30 to go in the first quarter, Anderson calls timeout.

Jayvian Meaux (sophomore) is stuffed on his first run for a loss of a yard. Meaux runs again and fights for five yards. On 3rd & 5, Meaux runs up the middle for three yards. The Admirals elect to go for it on 4th & 2, there is a pitch to Meaux but he does not get the first down. The turnover on downs will give Anderson the ball on their own 39 Score is 0-0 after the first series from the Ads

Anderson's opening kickoff goes out of bounds. Danville forces them to rekick. Their next kick goes out of bounds too and the Admirals take the ball this time from the Anderson 48.

I think the Ads are still about 2 years away from making that a game. You can easily see that the depth has improved on the team but they need to get stronger on the lines to really hang with the top teams of 2A again. The offense can put up points but the defense will need to make some big headway by the end of the year to avoid a big loss like last year to LCA.

Have to keep picking Boyle until they drop. But there's a lot of history between these two teams!

Week 3 sees Anderson County (1-1) head to Danville (2-0). The game will be "Bate Night" for the Admirals, who will be honoring alumni of Bate High School, the pre-integration Black secondary school in the Danville system. As a result, the Admirals will be wearing jerseys to commemorate the school. Last week, the Admirals got into a basketball game with Knox Central, winning 72-42. It was the highest number of points for an Admiral team since the Sam Harp days in October 2004 when that Admirals team beat Trimble County 77-0. The Admirals had "perfect game" offensively, scoring on every drive, including a hail mary touchdown at the end of the first half that was arguably the biggest difference in the game. However, the Admirals struggled defensively for three-quarters of the game, giving up lots of quick scores to Knox Central on the ground and through the air, although they seemed to find some solutions late by stopping Knox on fourth down conversion attempts and getting a key interception in the third quarter. The Admirals also had five different players find the end zone, demonstrating that the old, explosive depth that existed on the rosters of old is coming back. The Bearcats dropped their first game of the week last week to Grayson County by the score of 40-14. Quarterback Henry Cooper went 3-for-8 for 43 yards, 1 touchdown and 2 interceptions. Hanks Melloan was also at the position and went 2-for-7 for 59 yards and 1 touchdown. Nine different Bearcat players touched the ball in the game, with Brayden Caldwell accumulating the most yards (31) on five carries. Last year's game constituted a bit of a statement for the Admirals as they went to Anderson and won 41-13. It became the first true road game win for Steve Stonebreaker as coach of the Admirals. Anderson will look to return the favor on Friday night. So who do you have in this one?

It's kinda funny because I remember growing up people said these same things about Boyle County. Attendance fell off near the end of the series but I think that was due to the dysfunction in the program that was created by bad administration so the fan base just dissolved. No one here has even suggested that Danville is on the same level as Boyle right now or is ready to compete with them. The schedule is weaker than the past to try to build confidence among these players because most of Danville's talent are freshman and sophomores. Give it another 3-4 years and, assuming things remain steady and with support, and Danville will have the depth to get back to where it wants to be. I heard nothing about that rumor you note. But if Danville starts to get back into the title mix in 2A - and it is still a ways from that as other benchmarks need to be checked off - there will be calls to resume this series and there will be growing community pressure to do so. Again, we're talking a 5 year plan here, not next season.

I'm confident that Burns will eventually get the ship on a good path at Mercer but not this year and not in this game. Atherton will run away with it.

I'm glad that this year's juniors and seniors, who endured those horrible winless years, are getting to enjoy success. As our 2A poll on this site shows, the Ads are a step below the other 5-6 2A competitors but give it another 2 years and I think Stonebreaker can change that narrative. Heck, I think you all under Clevenger have really built yourselves into a team that can break out of that logjam in the semis and get to Lexington. There's a lot of good teams at the top of 2A and many of them keep upgrading (see Rash back at Beechwood) and no one is coming down!

Agreed. This is one of those depth issues that will take time for the Ads to correct. The depth of some playmakers is starting to improve but getting that push on the lines is what is going to be the next thing that needs addressing as that's where championship caliber teams are made.

Someone used to tell me a story that when they were doing radio football PBP they'd have one of those little sand hourglass timers that went for like 3 minutes and once the sand ran out they'd always make sure to say the score/time again for the listeners. Thought that was an idea others should copy!

I try. The Ads radio crew does their best and I know it's not an easy job but it is frustrating when the clock isn't said for a long period of time or they tell you "That was a 1 yard run and now it's 2nd & 5" and you are like "Huh?"
