  1. I absolutely get your point, and as a (non-coaching, non-administrative) parent I'll honestly admit I've never completely sussed out what's okay, what's not okay, what's technically okay but ethically up-in-arms territory, and so forth. My main point was not this incident -- not my circus, not my monkeys -- but rather the idea that players and families need to determine what works best for them rather than simply signing on with a perennial winner. Tark and I quickly found common ground, and neither he nor I meant to denigrate anybody.
  2. Okay, I didn't mean to confuse anyone or start anything; there was nothing weird or underhanded about the event, so maybe "invited" was the wrong word. Way back when someone from CCH -- and no, I have no idea who it was -- apparently saw our son working out with his middle-school AAU buddies, suggested he'd be a good fit at their school, and asked him if he'd be interested in going there. This story was related to me by the aforementioned son and one of the folks who was running the workout. Neither of them saw anything wrong with it; we and our son considered the possibility and chose not to pursue it. So no whammies intended. We good here?
  3. I'm sure you meant nothing negative here, but consider carefully how that statement might strike some folks. As an 8th grader my son was invited to play at CCH and chose not to -- not every school or program is for every player, even when the school and the program are both excellent.
  4. Apparently not, and odds are you (or someone) will be asking this same question about this same topic about this same time next year as well.
  5. I'm with this 100% but it also highlights one of my concerns about the way BGP "hype" tends to work. The kids who are truly superior get a lot of absolutely justified press here -- but face it, they're getting it elsewhere too. Then there are the kids who do something unfortunate, like getting thrown out of game or suspended from a team -- then, as a few recent threads demonstrate, they get a bit of online spotlight as well. I feel badly for the kids in the middle, the ones who score their 10 or 12 every game, maybe get lucky enough to play some small college ball, and go largely unnoticed. But I guess that's life.
  6. I agree wholeheartedly with the entire post and would like to add a small something (with hopes I don't offend). It's clear that coaches often view their team as a family, though the term family obviously means different things to different people. With that in mind, I think some coaches -- often inadvertently and with all good intentions -- devote a lot of attention to kids struggling with obvious disadvantages while maybe devoting a bit less attention to kids whom they assume will "be okay" based on the relative stability of their situations. I'm not saying it's good or bad, just offering an observation based on three schools' worth of involvement.
  7. My reliable source says the kid will be at 22 Ft. Academy next fall. Or maybe next week.
  8. When last I checked, Steffan was averaging 20+ ppg for UC-Clermont.
  9. I am uneasy about pushing this thread further in its current direction but I'm also genuinely curious about how different programs handle disciplinary issues. Am I right in recalling that Hollis and Mullins each have had one team suspension already this season?
  10. Cleared to play. Actually got about three minutes of burn in Holy Cross game, should be totally active for Friday at BB&T.
  11. This is one of those BGP threads that probably would have fared better as a verbal exchange at somebody's local watering hole.
  12. Good catch -- I mixed up my 6s and 7s. Or 7s and 6s.
  13. Final from last night. Sorry for the late post. Dixie improves to 17-6 and completes sweep of district.
  14. Based on personal and professional experience, I believe that many of the more troubling high-school and summer ball behaviors are "trickle downs" from the culture surrounding college athletics.
  15. This complicates things. Is it Airball in F Major or Airball in D Minor?
  16. No big deal but Newport-Dixie score was 55-51 rather than 58-48.
  17. Allow me to adjust your spectacles, friend. The kid in question is an NHS member with a 4.2 GPA, an ACT composite of 31, and a KY On-Demand Writing score of 300—out of a possible 300, that is. He has an armful of college acceptances and scholarship offers, some with basketball and some without, including UC’s engineering school. Solid enough for you?
  18. I agree that both teams played poorly, but I respectfully suggest that the "snore factor" wasn't just due to that. No high-school basketball game should last over one hour and fifty minutes.
  19. My bad. Maybe worth a separate thread, but cancel my order for now.
  20. I'll buy that but I don't know how better to judge them. What would your criteria be and how would you rank 9th Region defenses at this point?
