Size alone doesn't equate to being a "banger" in basketball. Maybe I'm old school, but I always heard the term "bang" under the basket used to describe tough, physical play. Again, maybe I'm old school, but that style of play usually shows up in the rebounding stats, since there are no stats for tough, physical defense (other than maybe fouls). When I think of the term "Banger", I think of those types of players that when I was a kid were memoralized in Holy Cross gym's "Board of Control". Some of those guys were undersized, but always tough, aggressive rebounders and defensive players - we called them "bangers".

WOW! Some of the BGP posters had Heritage ranked as high as 5th or 6th in preseason in the D-III poll. Beechwood is leading Heritage by 27 at half and then coasts to an easy win, and the other D-III schools are DROOLING for a chance to play Beechwood? As Dickie V would say, "ARE YOU KIDDING ME"?

Agreed. Stauffer and Ryle are too much down low for CCH. Wellbrock can play physical with them, but CCH has no one else who can bang with Ryle under the basket. And, while I agree with Clyde about Ryle's offense, CCH has not yet found its perimiter game either.

Scott will be as good as advertised, Mason plays tough at home, should be a good one. Scott by 2 with a Kellen Smith shot at the buzzer.

What position is Montgomery playing? I always thought he was a guard.

I really like Jacob Flesch at guard. Very smart and gutty player. He has played AAU ball with Hodges and Robinson for years, and I see a lot of upside for this team.

I know it doesn't always translate to the varsity level, but when CovCath's class of 2011 (next year's seniors) were freshmen, they finished tied for first in the east division, and were a coin flip away from going to the freshman championship game. Last year, when the class of 2011 were sophomores, the JV team went undefeated in NKY and beat Highlands pretty handily. The 2011 class was highly touted when they came in as freshmen (they were the first class to come to CovCath following the 2006 state championship and enthusiasm was very high regarding CovCath football at that time). As a result, they have a number of good athletes and expectations about that class were high. The question mark surrounding the 2011 class has always been quarterback. Troy Timmerman did a very good job at quarterback as a freshman, and began the season last year as the starting JV quarterback, but for some reason, he has not played quarterback since the middle of last year. When Timmerman (who is 6'3" or 6'4") was a freshman, he had two tall receivers (one played wide receiver and the other lined up mostly at tight end, both of whom are 6'3" or 6'4") and a third very speedy receiver, to throw to, and they were very effective. For what it's worth, Timmerman and those three receivers all also played on a very good CCH freshman basketball team, so they indeed are athletes. As freshmen, the 2011 class also had very good running backs which complimented the passing game and had an excellent defense. The 2012 class and the 2013 classes are also strong, so there should be a lot of depth for CovCath next year. Everyone around the program is high on the new coaching staff, and it is well deserved. However, one unfortunate by-product of the coaching change is that the current staff did not have the benefit of watching the class of 2011 when they were highly successful freshmen and sophomores. It will be interesting to see what becomes of CovCath's class of 2011. Will they have the success that everyone around the program believed they would have when they came in as freshmen?

The coaches did not pick Beechwood to even be in the preseason top 10 in NKY this year. Beechwood lost most of their starters and offensive production from last year. Heck, many BGPer's were predicting Dayton or Villa to win D-III this year. Yet, Beechwood gave the defending state champs (who also happen to be nationally-ranked) fits. Either everyone missed the boat on this team, or Beechwood's coaching staff must be something else!

Jenkins, Shumate, Pauly and Bir all played for the N KY Flash AAU team. The Flash finished in the final four of the state AAU tournament the last two years (beating Lexington Catholic in the quarterfinals to get there last year). And....you know that if they played for Mark Ogle, they certainly know how to play aggressive man to man defense.
