That's a great point. We were talking about that at the game about how it would have been in this district alignment when I was in HS (the mid 80s) as opposed to the old 32nd with Scott Co. The last Owen County district title, prior to 2009, was in 1987. The 32nd seeded for a few years in the 90s (before Walton Verona joined up in 97 or so), and Owen was almost always in the 2 vs 3 game, which meant a game against Grant or Williamstown to make regionals. Other than those years, the district draw was all about avoiding Scott Co, and, if you were Grant, Owen, or Williamstown hopefully drawing OC or Williamstown. OC made the regional every now and then, but there was no beating Scott County in the district final. Scott won the district 15 out of 16 times between 1990 and 2005. Prime example, the best Owen team that I can remember was in 1996. That team went to the state All-A Semis, beat #1 Lexington Catholic in the state All-A first round , but lost to Scott County four times, including the district and regional finals.

I know that way back in the old old days (pre-1980, when I moved away as a kid), the benches at the old BCHS gym were moved to the end zones for district tournaments, but they were still on the home side benches for regular season games. That gym was unique in that the benches on the home side and the bleachers on the visiting side went almost all the way to the ceiling. If you say in the top row, you were literally in the rafters. And if Bracken played one of their old 38th rivals (Augusta, Deming, Pendleton) or a special occasion like homecoming or whatever winter festival they had at the old high school, that place would be packed and get loud. Good times.

Dixie was very good. Just not enough firepower to go along with him. Owen also got 13 points from Hunter Trenary, and got some solid contribution from its bench tonight. Owen will go for its third straight district title Friday, and its fourth under head coach Devin Duvall. Prior to him taking over the helm, the Rebels had two district titles in school history.

The weirdest thing about that end of game call wasnt that there was actually a foul called...its the time it took to call it. The whistle didnt blow until a couple of seconds later.

I was there for Mason Co.'s first regional title, when they beat Clark in 1981. They had fallen short a few times before, so the MC faithful were understandibly stoked that night when they finally kicked down that door. It probably didnt help that even after Mason consolidated, their rivals Maysville, a much smaller school, were still winning region titles on a somewhat regular basis. The next year, I was there when they beat Paris for the title, which made them 30-0. I was there for Maysville's last regional title, I think they beat Montgomery in the late 80s. I was in college at that point. I was probably at that Harrison-Bath game, but dont remember details. I think they met in the finals multiple times if I am not mistaken. I vaguely remember Bath Co and Maysville playing in a title game that I think Bath won on a last second shot. Yes, when I was growing up, I always thought of Bath Co as a 10th region powerhouse. :thumb:. I know the split session deal isnt a very popular subject around here, but I always thought it was cool to leave right after school from Wed through Friday and go to a game with it still being daylight. I dont know why I liked it so much, but I did.

You know, you could turn back the clock to 1979 when Rupp Arena hosted its first state tournament, and in your quote, replace where you type Louisville (in bold) with Lexington, and replace where you type Rupp Arena (in bold)with Freedom Hall, and you would hear the argument that was made back then when the state tourney went to Lexington after the long run it was in Louisville. I remember people were complaining because Lexington didnt have the hotels surrounding the KFEC like Louisville did, so everyone wasnt staying in the same place. People got used to it, and it didnt take long for Rupp Arena to become "the place". Back to the topic- I went to numerous 10th regional tournaments during my childhood and teen years at the Fieldhouse, and went to last year's first round and finals at NKU (missed the Montgomery Co edition), and the atmopshere was better at Mason. But, I also dont see anything wrong with spreading it around every now and then, either. I think the tourney experience would improve over time at the BOKC as well.
