Posted by Mike Fields on December 27, 2008 Updates from Saturday’s quarterfinals of the Republic Bank Holiday Classic boys’ basketball tournament at Lexington Catholic. No. 10 Hazard had no trouble beating No. 7 Manual 71-50. Junior point guard Josh Whitaker’s 23 points, 7 assists and 5 steals led the Bulldogs. Robert Warren didn’t miss a shot and had 18 points. Michael Campbell had 8 points and 10 rebounds. Manual’s Jacob Jenkins had 13 points, but still looked far from his old self as he is still recovering from a foot injury. Junior point guard Josh Whitaker has 11 points and 3 assists as Hazard leads 29-19 at halftime. The Bulldogs are shooting 60%. Michael Campbell has 8 rebounds for Hazard. Manual’s Harold Calhoun has 6 points. Senior star Jacob Jenkins, showing the effects of a foot injury, played the second quarter and had 2 points. Hazard, paced by Josh Whitaker’s 7 points, leads 15-9 after one quarter. Manual star Jacob Jenkins, who had been sidelined with a foot injury before playing in Friday’s opening round, hasn’t been on the court yet Saturday.

Defending tournament champ Lexington Catholic blew it open in the second half and won81-58. Knights senior star Vee Sanford had 17 points despite sitting out the first half with a sore knee. Aaron Watts, who had 34 points in McCreary’s first-round win, had 22 against the Knights. UK Coach Billy Gillispie has a front-row seat, presumably to watch LexCath’s Vee Sanford. Sanford sat out the first half with tendinitis in his right knee, but the Knights were still able to build a 39-28 halftime lead. Sanford is seeing action in the second half.

It will be really hard for Middleton to get a lot of attention for Mr. Basketball already committing to Georgetown. Jon Hood is a lock, no question.
