Are we pushing our kids too hard in sports?
Handy Manny replied to EZ Living's topic in KY Boys Basketball (High School)
My son really enjoys playing summer basketball. Should we force him to play something else. Maybe playstation? Kids can be kids and some kids enjoy the competition of summer basketball. -
I agree to this. Ryle played good defense. I don't think Conner intentionally stalled the ball. They were running a deliberate offense, but failed to get the looks they wanted because of smothering defense by Ryle. Congrats to the Raiders.

I am not a fan of stall ball at all, but I do not agree with a shot clock at the high school level. Some teams just cannot play the uptempo style of ball. I am to each his own. If you prefer the fast paced game as a coch, then you should find ways to initiate that style. Why take that advantage away from the schools that need it and master it as part of their game plan. I am sure there are people out there that don't like the 3pt shot, but as a coach you find ways to incorporate it and defend against it.

Free Throws how much of it is coaching?
Handy Manny replied to kyvince's topic in KY Boys Basketball (High School)
Free throws are muscle memory and repetition. Kids need to shoot at least 100 a day. They just don't do it. I don't know what goes on at open gyms and shoot arounds, but I would hope that it is essentials like free throws. Sadly, I assume not though. I think coaches don't spend time on them because they may instruct a player to do it on their own. I guarantee that very few actually do. The result is what you see in the box scores. Is 50% from the line acceptable? I like to see a team shooting in the upper 80's. -
Conner/Ryle Predictions (2/24)
Handy Manny replied to Walter's topic in KY Boys Basketball (High School)
I say Conner gets down early and makes a run late to take the lead and win by 2. Conner 48 - 46. -

Dixie Heights/Boone County Predictions 2/19

This is a no brainer. Trammel at full strength is one of the top guards in the 9th. You take him out of any lineup and the ceiling lowers on that team. -

It is good to see Stewart making some noise. He has been playing really well all season. -
Conner/ Newport Catholic Predictions
Handy Manny replied to Handy Manny's topic in KY Boys Basketball (High School)
Conner should be fine in the paint. If Hodges can stay out of foul trouble then Conner should have no problem containing Giesler. I think this game hinges on Lang. If he has a good night then the Cougars win by 3 or 4. If Lang has an off night it can easily go the other way. I am going to say Conner by 3 with it being a game of runs. -
Any ideas how this game plays out in Newport?

Campbell County / Ryle Predictions 2/18
Handy Manny replied to dd734's topic in KY Boys Basketball (High School)
I like the Raiders in this one. I am predicting big games from Stauffer and McLeish. I take Ryle 62 - 52. -
Cooper/ Dixie Heights Predictions (2/18)

Bradley may get his 25, but I don't see any way in the world Cooper beats Dixie. -
Holmes/Conner Predictions (2/16)
Handy Manny replied to Walter's topic in KY Boys Basketball (High School)
I can confirm the Silver Grove game tonight. It is Varsity only at 7:30. I do not believe the Holmes game will be made up. -
Same can be said for Lang. Conner played a bad game, but managed to pull out the win.
-
The 9th region should belong to Conner next year. They return 3 starters and 5 from their 7 man varsity rotation. Liechty, who is the 6th man this year has played varsity since he was a freshman. The will have Jacob Flesch 6'0" SR Taylor Miller 6'0" SR Jordan Liechty 6'2" SR Clay Robinson 6'6" SR Tyler Hodges 6'8" SR Brandon Ernstes 6'5" SR
-
Perkins and Stinson will be back and neither of them plays JV.
-
JV scores and records cannot be used to determine how a team's varsity will be the following year. Conner's jv struggles this year alot and they will likely be the top team in Boone County next year because of the amount of varsity experience they return. Boone will be tough as always. Montgomery and Brown are very solid, but how much deeper do they go without throwing in players with little to no varsity experience?
-
I really think Boone looses more than Ryle. Gabbard, Popp, Cotton, Earls, Lay. They will be alright, but I think Ryle with Stauffer, Vollet, Perkins, & Stinson will be better.

This should make for a very entertaining game. I like the Cougars chances at home. I will go with the them by 4 or 5. -
You have got to like Conner, Ryle, & Dixie next year in NKY.
