This game was played at Mercer. Mercer got outhustled in the first half but slapped a press on Wayne in the 4th quarter that was the turning point. Mercer has the potential to go a long ways in the region if they can get better guard play.

The teacher that told me this said that Marty told him this in the Fall. So, hear-say for now.

The answer that I got was that there were too many players and that he wanted to evaluate them all for a longer period of time before making the final cut. Yes, there is definately some help coming from the football team. Jake Mayes for one should make a contribution to the team.

By the way, the first game in the new gym is Dec. 19 against Lexington Christian. Come check it out. Also, miss having you guys in our district except for when the tournament was at Garrard (bad road at a bad time of year).

Oops! What a typo! I meant to put "over 2,500" and not "over 5,000". Sorry! By the way, I have been in the gym and 2,500 does not seem to do it justice. The old gym is said to hold around 1,400 and this gym seems a lot bigger that that.

I was told that he was saying that he was going to teach through December and that he had enough sick time to cover the rest of the year and then retire. This was told to me by another teacher in the system so take it for what it's worth.

You can believe me when I say this, "I know Brian WAY too well". What would you like to know? Where he grew up, who his first wife was, where did he live when he first got married, where was he living when he got a divorce? Get the point!?! With that being said, he could have very easily ran down Donnie Redd once or twice, but only if he had an angle on him. My point was that Danville had too much overall team speed. I know, I was there!

I figured it would be close. Mercer has the potential to be one of the top teams in the region and IMO McCreary is not heads and shoulders above the rest of the region. Too bad that this was the first game of the year and on a Tuesday night.

Your right, I think. The only one that I can think of is the Mayes kid. I believe that their are a couple of others who quit the team last year but do play football. I am not for sure if they are going to play basketball or not. Really no big loss if they don't.

Mercer, should have their full compliment of players. The football team was beat a couple of weeks, ago. Granted, they won't be in basketball shape but they still should play, IMO.

Mercer, has a new gym that should open in Jan09. I have not been to Scott Co.'s gym but the principal of Mercer told me that the new gym is closely modeled after Scott's. Seating capacity of over 5,000, 3 full courts, walk around upper deck with seating and a video replay screen. HUGE compared to Mercer's old gym.

Brian and Brandon both were sophmores on the 87 team and yes they were fast. I know Brian very well and I am sure that even he would admit that he wasn't as fast as the Danville running backs.

Exactly, what I was saying. Speed, speed and more speed was what seperated Mercer and Danville. Don't get me wrong, Danville is a far superior program compared to Mercer.

I'd agree with you on all of the above. I liked playing in Somerset's gym but Monticello's was a dump! Probably the worst locker rooms and showers in the history of basketball! Great games, bad gym!

Danville, Anderson and Mercer was the ranking of the district. This was Mercer's first year in AA. I believe Anderson got beat by Fort Knox in the Semi's on a blocked extra point that year. Mercer finished up the year 7-3 with losses to Danville, Anderson and I can't remember the other team. Danville beat Mercer 20-0 that year. Speed was the killing factor.

I agree! Nobody, could stop their running game and their defense was top notch. People, tend to forget that before the merger H-Burg would only have around 20 football players with only about 13 that actually played. That's not a big addition when the school merged. However, no way would Mercer have won the state if they had not merged.

Mercer had a couple of bad coaches and not a lot of talent during the mid and late 90's. Mercer's problem has always been a lack of speed until the merger. IMO, in 1986 and 1987 Mercer had a better team than Danville but Danville had too much speed for Mercer. Basically, all Danville had to do was hand it off to their tailback and he would go around the end for 5 to 100 yards.

Mountain Thunder, I remember the game that you are talking about. Didn't you guys have a real good player that got hurt during the game? Did he end up going to UK? Thanks!

I am really not complaining (except for trying to make sense out of your rant) but instead just stating the facts and correcting a previous poster. Please, feel free to correct me if I am posting anything that is incorrect. I do not have a child playing for Marty but instead I am a loyal follower of Mercer Co. sports. I very much appreciate what Marty has done with the football program and personally he has done nothing to me to want him gone. However, facts are facts and things are what they are.
