Insinuating? I never said WHY he left. All I said was that he wasn't coaching with his father. I never mentioned anything about personal or family matters. You brought this up. I am above bringing it up but you odviousely are not in order to try and make yourself look good. I will always post facts on here and not attack any other member unless they are posting inaccurate facts. Maybe, you should do the same!!

Excellent point and all true. As a former official I was tought to limit my conversation's with the coaches because their could be something else going on while you are talking and not giving your full attention to the game. As a fan, it looks really bad for the official who just made a close or controversial call when his partner is standing on the sidelines while carrying on a conversation. Good reply! This is why I joined this site!

All very good points! I think Jaggers is an outstanding coach with an outstanding record. However, it is odvious that their have been some poor decisions (3 onside kicks against HopTown, several 4th and longs and not kicking field goals) made THIS YEAR that I don't believe have been made in the past for whatever reason. By the way, I do remember a few people complaining about "little Johnnie" not playing but this was due to a couple of players from H-Burg that weren't getting to play as much because of the number of players and more talent when the 2 schools merged. I know that H-Burg's QB was pretty upset but he finally got over it and became a really good linebacker and went on to play at G-Town College. As far as Jaggers being old school, ask anyone in administration (except for Johnson) what they think about him and I don't think that you will get a "he's an old school coach" answer. You want "old school"? Larry French, Sam Harp, Alvis Johnson and Chuck Smith are just a few. What do these guys have in common that Jaggers doesn't? Respect of their community and their administration. Heck, even Jaggers own son quit coaching with him this year! All very good facts in this post

Also, good officials do not stand on the sidelines talking to the coaches while a team is shooting free throws. This is a real kicker for me.

Not hatred but just not liked. 1. Won't play Danville even though the gate would be tremendous. He says that he is too good of friends with Coach Harp. 2. Arrogance 3. Last year he said that Mercer had to play 2 games against Tenn. competition because nobody in KY wanted to play them. Personaly, I find this hard to believe. Lexington schools, Bardstown (I heard that they wanted to play), Anderson (oh wait, they bought out of the contract because of the merger). I do know that 1 of these games was brought on by Somerset backing out of a scheduled game but the other game could have been filled. 4. Arrogance 5. I can't get into on this site but he did not set a very good example for his players this past summer.

I never really trusted his officiating. I am sure that there was nothing to it but I always got the feeling...

That's a good one! Probably, one of the worst referees to ever ref a state tourney game and I believe he was there several times. :laugh:

He is saying that he is retiring at the end of the school year and moving to Tenn. This makes alot of sense being as this is his 27th year of teaching and that his "Ace in the hole", superintendant Bruce Johnson is leaving in December. You probably will not find 5 people in Mercer that will be sad about his departure.

In the 12th, Scott Bottoms and Terry Dyehouse are the best.

I don't know about the Rockcastle game but in the HopTown game it was a bad snap that prevented the extra point. In OT of that game the kicker kicked a 37 yard field goal in OT. Pretty good don't you think?!?:sssh:

So have countless others who have watched Mercer play this year. He has made some of the most stupid play calls since Bill Curry had Tim Couch run the option at Florida.:scared:

I agree! I don't understand his philosophy on this at all. The kicker has a great leg and 3 points is always better than 0! Thank goodness Jaggers is gone after this year!:fight:

Interesting comment. I was at that game and I didn't that. Southwestern gave Mercer all they wanted in the first half but they were completely dominated in the 2nd half. Oh well, I have a feeling that they will meet again.

Sorry, I didn't answer all your questions in the previous post. I believe that Smith arrived in 85 or 86. We had some good teams in the late 80's of which he was an important part of. I remember some of players describing him as crazy and in your face during the summer 2 a days. But, they all liked him. Mercer made the semi-finals in 87 and got beat by Heath Co. Heath, had a huge line that we were no match for. Dennis Davis was the quarterback of an option attack. Good team but we still couldn't match the speed of Danville.

I won't swear to it but I believe French left after the 1989 season to go to Meade Co. Smith had left a year or 2 before that. French went to Meade Co. because the Mercer school administration would not upgrade the football locker room which was in pitiful shape at that time. It seems that I remember some talk about hiring Smith for the job when French left but they decided to hire Roscoe Perkins instead (another great hire of former AD Larry Yeager).:mad:

I believe for just 2 years, 1986 and 1987. But, now that I think about it, they may have been together for a couple of years after that, also. I'll check on it.

I would have to give the advantage to Mercer if it rains. They do have a terrific run defense.

I agree. The key to beating Mercer is the passing game because you are not going to beat them with the run. Heck, Shayne Boyd could throw for 300 yards against Mercer's pass defense!:eek:

I was at Mercer when French and Smith were both there. Mercer's team got better when Smith arrived but the quality of players was also better. Bottom line is this: French and Smith are excellent coaches who happen to also be QUALITY people! Marty Jaggers could learn alot from these 2 coaches.
