From all accounts, this is West Carter's best team in a long time. I look forward to this game because it has the potential to be Russell's first close game of the season. It's probably helpful to have some close games prior to the playoffs to see how they react. That being said, I think Russell will pass the test and come away with a 28-20 win.

I think a letdown from Ashland is inevitable in this game as the crowd will be much smaller and there won't be as much excitement in the air. However, I don't it will be enough to cause them to lose! All I know about Waverly is (1) they are 3-1, (2) their colors are black and orange and their mascot is a Tiger (sounds familiar, huh?), and (3) their QB is their star player...#6 Derek Roback is 6-3, 220 and some website I ran across said he runs a 4.5 40-yd dash, so he's probably pretty fast. Good luck to the Tomcats. Keep your unblemished record intact through this week and then you get a week off to prepare for the trip to Johnson Central.

For the record, I am a Russell fan who mentioned Highlands. I think Painter (an Ashland fan) told me to shut up. I think Ashland just beat the best team on their regular season schedule rather handily tonight, so my mind automatically wonders if they can beat the team that stands in their way of a state title. Sorry I mentioned them. Could a moderator just delete my posts from this thread?

Congratulations to Mason County on pulling out the win against an obviously vastly improved Rowan County team. Rowan County and Lawrence County are turning what used to be a rather weak 4A district into a LOT stronger competition!

OK. I'll lay off the Highlands talk. It does make one wonder, though, since the last time Ashland beat Ironton was 1990 and the Tomcats managed to win the state title that year. And since Ashland will clearly have to go through Highlands to do the same this year...OK, enjoy your victory celebration...I'll leave it at that. Highlands has bigger things to worry about, too, as they play Cincy St. X this coming week! Congratulations to Ashland on beating what I thought was a very good Ironton team.

Congratulations to Lawrence County. I think all of their district opponents are going to be rather surprised at the Lawrence County team that shows up to play them this year. I predict the Bulldogs are going to go on a "run of revenge" against all of them and go unbeaten in district play.

This team was in the state championship game last year, though. I would think that behind even a halfway competent line, a player being touted for state player of the year who has already signed with a major SEC power should be racking up yards. Did Breathitt graduate their entire line from last year's team?

Great win for Raceland! Congratulations. It looks like now that "transfer-gate" is over, the Rams can get down to playing some serious football. :-) Good to see them finally put it together.

I'm just curious about Highlands because I know that's where the story will be told on Ashland's season virtually every year from here until they get out of the region they are in. I thought Ironton was awfully good, but I haven't personally seen a Highlands team play in a long time. I just wonder if they are really all that much better than Ironton or is this another potential state championship Ashland team?

That's why I think a ton of credit needs to go to Coach Hart. Ashland wasn't 14 points better talent-wise than Ironton, but he outcoached the soon to be all-time winningest coach in Ohio high school football!

This is an impressive win. I know Breathitt has lost a few this year, but the margin in this one is pretty impressive.

Congratulations to Ashland on the win. I listened to most all of this one while watching the Russell/Boyd game. Credit has to go to Coach Leon Hart who clearly outcoached Lutz in this one. The only thing I was disappointed in was my usual favorite radio announcer for Ashland. Demartino from Ashland tackled Taylor from Ironton on a play in the 4th quarter and he busted out into a cackle saying "he cut him right in half...he's not getting up and he might not get up til tomorrow". He carried on in glee that the Ironton player wasn't getting up. Never once was there a word of concern for the player. To be honest, it was one of the most despicable things I've ever heard on a broadcast. I've just never heard anything like it on the radio. Maybe in the stands, but not on the radio. Anyhow, thankfully Taylor got up. The Ashland radio announcer then went on to spell out the words L-O-S-S and O-V-E-R several times as the game wound down. It made me think, though, just how important are these games? I've got to admit I've been into games so much before where I hated the other team so much, I lost perspective and actually enjoyed it when I saw an injury to the other team. I've got to say thanks to the Ashland radio announcer for helping me remember to keep that perspective, though, in victory or defeat. That's one I don't think I'll ever forget. Good luck to Ashland, though, the rest of their season. I said before the game that if they could beat Ironton, then maybe they have a shot against Highlands this year. We shall see.

Russell doesn't give up any points to anyone but Ironton and Ashland. In all seriousness, Russell did a good job in this game. It was a solid performance after taking two beatings in a row. Boyd County looks like a lackluster team at this point that makes a lot of mistakes. Russell took advantage of the mistakes when they had to. Good win for the Devils to get the season back on track. On a side note, I must say I was rather disappointed in the crowd that was there tonight. Not very many people for what used to be a fairly decent rivalry.

I'm not sure if this baby has seen Ironton play yet! In all seriousness, I wish Ashland the best in this game tonight. I hope they win it to represent Kentucky well. By the way, is there any chance it's on TV? I would think out of all the games the Ohio University station chooses to broadcast on Time Warner, this one would be at the top of the list this year.

Ram said it best. Some his posts on here should be required high school football reading. :-) I think "we" is appropriate in high school, college, and pros. It is interesting to note, though, that fans of tennis players or golfers never refer to them as "we". You never hear anyone say "we won the Masters" when Tiger Woods wins (except maybe his caddy). It must only be appropriate for teams with a certain number or more.

I heard that Raceland is now free of all of the Greenup transfers. Is this true? If so, perhaps this will be a rallying point for the remaining Raceland players to come together and get it done.
