  1. For Dunmire to play on a badly injuried ankle is tough, but last year Hills' Arie Slone had surgery to place 3 screws and a pin in a shattered finger on Monday and led Hills in tackles against Frankfort on Friday. Is great to see kids show heart to get to play in big game against a rival. Hope both teams do not have any more injuries!!!
  2. Hills has the best passing attack Frankfort will face, as well as a renewed commitment to the run. Curry being able to hit 5-6 different receivers will open up the running lanes for Wright and Curry. WH also has big/strong lines which could wear on Frankfort as the game goes along. If Hills limits big plays and special teams scores, do not see Frankfort being able to drive the ball consistantly. Frankfort will get yards/scores (too many good/fast backs for Frankfort), but Hills wins 28-20.
  3. The entire atmosphere has appeared to change at Western Hills, and most of the credit for that goes to Coach Miller. The team is much more physically and mentally tough. This team is physically stronger as a whole, and plays much more as a team. Last year's seniors showed great leadership, and that has carried over to this years seniors. The senior class took their lumps as sophs (going 1-10), but now expect to win (not hope to win). Coach Miller and his staff have done a great job getting this entire program on the up-swing.
  4. Has to be one of the longest games in high school history (ran almost 4 hours)!! Many turnovers, penalties called, clock "issues," Washington County slow to ball, etc. One of the worse officiated games at the high school level! Was bad both ways, but seemed to hurt Hills more at times (even with scoring 59 points). Does anyone know if this is most points scored in single game by a Western Hills team?
  5. Huge character game for Western Hills. Touch loss last week, players sick all week, expectations for big season, and down 20 points in first 6 minutes on the road. Hills came back and out scored Washington County 59-6 rest of game. Seniors showed great leadership. HUGE rushing numbers for Hills and limited Washington County to 6 points after terrible start. Many bumps, bruises and illness to overcome before rival game against Frankfort High next week
  6. Not sure how many starters will be out for Hills, but on Wed. there were over 20 kids out of practice due to illness and injury (and around 135 absent from school). Could be a character building game for Hills, see how they overcome adversity.
  7. If Hills corrects its mistakes from Woodford County game, Hills could roll. If a few missed assignments or plays off for Hills, allows Washington County to hang around. Hills 28-7.
  8. Was a close game throughout, even with Woodford up by 15 at halftime. Woodford Co made plays when they needed to, while Western Hills had too many mistakes. Woodford Co scored 2 TDs on 4th down, and had a bubble screen go for a 79 yard TD. Western Hills had 7 turnovers!! Also had a blocked FG, 2 missed/blocked extra points, 4th down pass dropped, 32 yard competion off of a fake punt nullified on penalty, and a sideline penalty (not seen one of these in a high school game). Was a good battle throughout, with Hills getting to Woodford's 32 yard line in the last minute. Difference in number of varsity athletes showed. Hills (especially the line) tired by last drive. Curry had 256 yards passing, Justin Wright (MVP) had 114 yards rushing, Chris Pugh had 96 yards receiving, and Arie Slone had 11 tackles for WH.
  9. Woodford struggled last week against South Oldham (winless in 2008), and was down 12-10 in 4th quarter. Woodford blocked 2 punts (one for a TD), recovered a fumble, and had the ball in the red zone 5 times; but only scored 27 points. Suprised predicting 35-41 points for Woodford. Woodford did bring a great deal of pressure on every play and WH will have to find a way to block, but Curry's size and ability to get outside helps WH. Woodford has the advantage of having a game under its belt, but also allows WH actual game footage. Could be a low scoring game if defenses can pressure both QBs. Hills 21-17.
  10. Western Hills did some really good things at scrimmage. They beat Dunbar 3 TD to 0, beat Lou Southern 4 TD to 0, and tied North Laurel 1 TD - 1 TD. Typical first scrimmage with a few missed assignments and mistakes. Dylan Curry had a good day throwing the ball and would have had big day running the ball, but limited contact on QB (Curry is a LOAD at QB). Defense did well swarming to the ball and limited missed tackles. Offensive and defensive lines were able to control the line of scrimmage well - a good sign since Hills still without one starter due to injury. A good day for a Hills (3A) against two 6A schools and a 5A school. Depth and conditioning did hurt by the last scrimmage (North Laurel), but sure coaches will work on conditioning more until season. Other than the limited parking it was a great event - good viewing areas for the fans and great opportunity for teams to play different opponents from around the state.
  11. Hills did lose 4 VERY important players to graduation, but they should be an improved team this season. They have four linemen returning that should give Curry more time in the pocket and open bigger holes in the running game. Wright returns at FB giving Hills a good inside running attack. The loss of Reed (WR) and Lee (TE) do hurt, but Hills has more weapons this season if they develop. Chris Pugh (WR) is almost a Reed clone and Bobby Clay (WR) has state title track speed (must develop consistency). At TE Arie Slone is a better blocker and reciver than Lee. On defense the starting front four return almost intact and the LB corp will be a team strength. Slone had over 100 tackles as a Soph last season and played the entire season in a cast, while Wright can play inside the box or on a slot reciever. Curry will play a strong saftey role this year, while Pugh started at DB. Must do better against the pass, but a strong front seven will help the secondary. In regard to the schedule, this is the first mention I have seen of anyone say Hills plays a weak schedule! For a school with little football tradition, Hills plays a difficult schedule. This season they have two 5A teams (Grant and Woodford County), three 4A teams (Franklin County, East and West Jessamine) as well as Frankfort High and Washington County (one of the top scoring teams in the state in 2008) - along with the district schedule. While not playing Trinity or St. X, still a difficult 3A schedule. Hills has no reason at this point to be overconfident, but there are plenty of reasons for excitment and expectations for this season.
  12. Not sure it is a lack of respect for North Oldham, just a fact that they lost a great deal from last season due to graduation. The Cats Pause looks purely at returning players in relation to last years results. Hills played every district game within 10 points ( 2 decided by 3 points), as well as beating two 5A and three 4A teams; and has the bulk of its starters and primary back-ups returning. Does not hurt that one of the only Division I recruits in the district plays for Hills. Will be a very competative district and might also hinge on injuries by the time the district games begin.
  13. Western Hills has only had two. Mumme's first Uk recruit Patrick Wells and Dylan Curry just committed to UL.
  14. Hills has the horses, now just has to use them. Last season they started to play more consistantly after implimenting the I formation with the Jet. Able to run the ball late in the game with the lead. I should be more effective this season with Wright at RB and Quetin Martin (5'9" 205lbs) at FB. Also have two good size TE in I with Cody Hecker (6' 215 lbs) and Slone(6'2" 205 lbs). Curry has a big-time arm and moves well for a kid his size. Hills also has good speed on corner with Chris Pugh, but must find another WR. Defense is the key. D-line looks to be strong and LBs are a team strength. Must do a better job stopping pass, but if d-line gets good rush will help DBs. Helps to have Noth Oldham and Spencer Co at home. Huge rivalry game at Henry Co for last district game!!!
  15. Hills has all of the parts to win the district and host a play-off game, but as COL Mike indicated this is a wide open district. Hills will be in their second season with their new office so with 4 lineman and most skill players back, should improve in point production. Curry (6'6" 245 lbs) and Justin Wright (6'0" 190 lbs) return at the skill positions. Defense actually played well most of the season, but struggled against the pass. Defense returns 8 starters including Arie Slone (6'2" 210 lbs) at LB with Curry and Wright - as well as all of the defensive line. With 2 of the 3 district game in Frankfort this season, could be a deciding factor in who wins the district crown.
  16. They left out Shelby County. Replaced them with one of the Bullitt County schools in their district.
  17. Do not understand the comment about not standing out when Curry runs the ball or plays defense. Hills has very few designed QB run plays, so Curry only ran the ball when scrambling. He ran a 4.8 at a college camp, so has very deceptive speed for a kid his size. Is big enough at the high school level to run over most D-line and LB, and is DBs nightmare at 6'6" and 250. He does run a little high, but is hard not to at his height. On defense he played DE last season, but played limited plays. Impressed UL, Duke, UK, Ball State, and Indiana enough at DE for them to consider offering a scholarship at that position (still a possibility he moves there at UL). Curry is a much better athlete than many are giving him credit for.
  18. Curry is being recruited primarily as a TE. He is big and strong enough to block like an o-lineman, but athletic enough to catch balls downfield. He is very strong and athletic for his size, and is deceptively quick. Has a high football IQ (son of a coach), so should be a great pick up for UL.
  19. Western Hills' QB Dylan Curry committed this afternoon to UL. A very good pick up for UL. Curry has the size (6'6" and 245 lbs) and speed (4.8) to play TE at UL, but also has a very strong arm (won a distance competition at the Bishop Dullagahan Camp with a throw over 70 yards) to play QB at the Div I level. Has not been mentioned by many recruiting services due to Hills' ball control offense, but a very good athlete. Will team with Frankfort High's Quan Weaver at UL to give the Cardinals a 1-2 Frankfort punch.
  20. Really love to hear the "Imperial March" (Darth Vader Song) from Star Wars when defense comes on the field the first time. Florida State used to do so - was very impressive.
  21. Was a good day for Western Hills. Their 7 on 7 team made it to the Final 8 (lost to Seneca 33-22) and they came in 2nd in the Big Man Challenge. Seneca is very athletic and go up to get the ball. Against Hills they had 2 TDs in which their WR just out jumped Hills FS - which is a feat since FS Dylan Curry from Hills is 6'6" with a 28" vertical.
  22. Western Hills (Frankfort) will be there as well.
  23. Hills will have a very good and experienced team. Their offense made great strides last season with a new offense, and have 4 linemen, the entire backfield and 3 WR returning. Curry is a big and athletic QB with a D I arm. Justin Wright is a hard-nosed FB with good size and down-hill speed (6'0" - 197 lbs and 4.8 speed). On defense Hills returns the bulk of its line and three LBs. Wright at LB is a load that can play the run or cover the slot, while Arie Slone (6'2" and 205 lbs) is a excellent run stopper in the middle (over 110 tackles playing with a cast due to surgery last season). The defensive backfield needs to improve, but young and athletic. Hills does not need to talk smack, but is in position to win the district and beat both in-town rivals.
  24. Hills should have a solid team this season and should be considered the district favorite. They return 8 starters on offense and 9 starters on defense. For the first time in many years expectations are high for Hills - will have to see how they play with these expectations. Numbers are up (around 60 kids) and attendance at off-season work outs has been good. Look for QB Dylan Curry (6'7", 245 lbs) to have a monster year. Should be an exciting year in this district.
