It is silly to consider a team coming off an upset road win over the 4-time defending state champs as a 28-point underdog (both CalPreps and Massey predicted a 42-14 score) may not be as sharp the next week on the road? Agree to disagree. Post game we will over analyze the game, win or lose, and point to effective passing games, effective running games, turnovers, untimely penalties, questionable play calling, and stout defensive line play as reasons the game was won or lost. But being ready to go emotionally and mentally at the start of the game is a factor and it's up to the coaches on both teams to have their players ready to go. I do agree Franklin County is extremely good.

You have to feel for NewCath and Newport. They both could easily be there as well.

Quisenberry is obviously the real deal. But shoutout to the Boyle linemen and receivers for staying on their blocks downfield. Quisenberry runs through arm tackles, but many of those arm tackles are because the Boyle blockers stay on their blocks and the CovCath defenders were reaching to make tackles as they were still engaged by the blockers. The Rebels are a well coached team.

Brown being out and losing the turnover battle obviously impacted the game for Boyle. The other thing I was hoping would impact the game was overconfidence from Boyle. No matter how many times you tell 17- and 18-year-old kids a team you whipped last season is capable of turning the tables, it is hard to get that message to resonate. And CovCath had the opposite effect working for them. A proud program coming out fired up and ready to play hard to make up for last year's debacle. Congrats to the Colonel players and coaches on a well-deserved win. On to the next one.

So I had to follow up with my Lloyd buddy. There were 4 classes in 1976, a state at large 4A division and the 4A Jefferson County division. Those winners would play for the 4A state championship. Lloyd was the 3A champ beating Whitley County 43 - 6 in the first round, beating Belfry 26 - 6 in the second round, and beating Shelby County 24 - 0 in the finals 2 days after Thanksgiving at Commonwealth Stadium.
