  1. 2012 is the biggest crock I've ever heard. ...anyone remember when Y2K was going to be the end of the world? I wonder what kind of doomsday warnings we'll have to look forward to in 2013?
  2. From experience, that doesn't always work. I know someone who told them that and the guy came to him during the oil change and said, "We saw that your serpentine belt was cracking and needs to be replaced soon otherwise your car could completely die on the highway. You can only go about 15 miles before the car dies if that belt breaks." Since this is a scary thought, the guy was talked into having that belt replaced for $120. I saw the belt...it was fine. This is on top of his $49.99 oil change, so with tax, he went in for an oil change and ended up paying nearly $200. In fact, I've taken my car to a Valvoline roughly 3 months after having a new serpentine belt replaced myself. They told me that my belt looked like it was getting some wear on it and might need replaced soon. I would imagine, it mostly depends on who the salesperson is at your local Valvoline.
  3. To add some positivity to this thread. I will say that the S&S Tire I've dealt with locally has been good. They never try to sell you anything unless you really need it, i.e. you have a bald tire that needs replaced or they just pulled a nail out of your tire and it'd probably be best to have it fixed. They're also the cheapest chain store around for oil changes. I always liked going to Valvoline because it was convenient. You just pull in and you're out in roughly 20 minutes, but the selling they try to do gets ridiculous. I did talk with a guy who worked at a Valvoline and he said that corporate wanted them to get at least $36 from every customer.
  4. Kind of funny, but I stopped at Valvoline to get an oil change one night. Should have known better because they always try to sell me SOMETHING, whether it's wiper blades, various lighting, etc. So the salesman comes in, tells me that my battery is bad and needs to be replaced. I told him that was impossible because I've never had a single problem out of that battery as it was just replaced one month prior. He said, "Oh, well we must have gotten a bad read on it then." He then went on to try and sell me some kind of automatic transmission flush. Mentioned something about how Jeeps had like 3 of these things that needed flushed so it'd be roughly $80 per each thingy-majigger to get flushed. So, roughly $240, plus the oil change. I stopped him there and and asked, "So, if I get you all to flush the transmission, how long will it take you guys to realize it's a manual transmission?" He looked at me funny and said, "Well I feel like an idiot now."
  5. My fiancee' ran into some shade-sters at the local Meineke. Her car died, due to busted vacuum hose and it was towed to Meineke. They charged her nearly $400 for replacing the vacuum hose AND installing a new battery. The car did not need a new battery at all, but since she told them to, "Just fix it," they did whatever they felt like they could get away with. So, she gets the car and a couple months later takes it to get an oil change. They call her about 15 minutes after dropping it off for the oil change and said, "We need you to come see this." There was a socket set, electrical tape, and an open pocket knife laying on the engine of the car. Obviously, this had been left there from Meineke.
  6. I dislike Coldplay because they steal other people's music and make millions of dollars off of it. From the link: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/09/16/coldplay-settles-satriani_n_289508.html "Joe Satriani's copyright infringement lawsuit against Coldplay has been settled, Satriani's rep tells Billboard. Last December, Satriani sued the British soft rockers, claiming that "Viva La Vida" ripped off his song "If I Could Fly." But the legal dispute was resolved Tuesday with an undisclosed settlement between the two parties." And here is a sample YouTube clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eb49QuPLuHg&feature=related
  7. This weekend isn't shaping up to be much of anything. Next week, however, could be a darn strong storm if it stays snow. Problem is, the latest model runs put us in the rain.
  8. What exactly is the "emergency?" That the snow plows can get down the streets?
  9. Lexington has declared a "snow emergency" - whatever that means. In other news, UK will still be having classes tomorrow.
  10. It's basically just snow + milk + vanilla + sugar. Mix to your liking.
  11. Fiancee' just reported that they had 10+ inches on the ground in Buckner/LaGrange.
  12. I know of people who live in Richmond and travel to Lex. for work. They had to turn around halfway to Lex. because 75 was so bad. I do find it a bit inconsiderate that UK is still operating on a normal schedule, no delays, nothing.
  13. Ranging from a half inch to and inch in Richmond. EKU has been put on a 2 hour delay, which completely screws up my day and work schedule. It's still coming down pretty good and all side roads are bad. I have no idea what the bypass looks like, but if it keeps going at this rate, they'll cancel classes - more the timing of this event rather than the amounts.
  14. Rentals are at least maintained regularly. They have to have regular oil changes, etc. in order to rent them out again. Also, any service problems have to be addressed in order to keep the cars working properly. If the car has a problem, it sits on the lot and doesn't make the company any money. Now, as for the driving, that's something that can't be controlled. Some cars may be driven wide-open and aggressively the entire time they're rented. Others may only be used for light trips around the city. You never know how well it will operate, but you can test drive them if you're interested. IMO, buying a used car from a rental company at least gives you some background info on it's use. You know it was maintained, whereas with any old used car you can never really be sure. Yeah, you may get a car that some old lady only drove to church and the grocery store, or you might get a car that somebody only got the oil changed in once every 10,000 miles. And as we all should know from the recent Toyota recalls, even buying a new (or practically new) car doesn't guarantee that you won't run in to problems with them.
  15. Been flurrying for about 2 hours here in Richmond. We have a nice little dusting outside. Waiting for the big stuff to crank up.
  16. Try checking out Enterprise. They sell their cars after they reach a certain mileage, something like between 25,000 and 50,000. They also give you around $1,000 less than the blue book price for the car.
  17. Later tonight, with the heaviest snow coming after midnight.
  18. IMO, Bailey is the best around here. I was sad to see him leave WKYT.
  19. You might want to add that that's the first call from Chris Bailey's weather blog http://www.kyweathercenter.com LEX18 is calling for 3-6 with spots of 8 inches. NWS is saying 3-5 right now, but that could change depending on the storm's track. WKYT has yet to make a prediction.
  20. Fair warning, that is (former WKYT weatherman) Chris Bailey's blog. He's been my favorite weatherman and far superior in terms of running his blog, but he is bullish on the snow at times. Not saying he's never right, just that he sometimes overestimates, while the other weathermen underestimate.
  21. Snowing now in Richmond. Probably a half inch and all of the roads are completely covered.
  22. They're saying around 2 for the Lexington area, but I doubt that will even happen this go around. Looking like enough snow to maybe cover the ground, then switch over to rain, before changing again to snow...again maybe an inch after it's all said and done.
