Please don't tell me I've been fudging one of my favorite phrases for years. I've been of the opinion that it goes "Where in the Sam Hill have you been?" for the entirety of my life.

 

You haven't, I took the liberty of going "hardcore". A euphemism for 'Hell', esp. in what in (or the) Sam Hill...! Also, Sam Hill is an American English slang phrase, a euphemism or minced oath for "the devil" or "hell" personified (as in, "What in the Sam Hill is that?").
