The Value of Business Experience for the POTUS

Featured Replies

"Business experience" is often mentioned as a way to judge a potential POTUS. Gov Romney always gets high marks for that.

Is it possible we're overstating that requirement/trait/experience?

Is deciding how many employees to hire this year or overseeing the development of a new product required to be a good "business" POTUS?

I'm struggling with this. IMO the US economy is not similar to the P&L of a privately-owned business.

Where am I wrong?

We might be overstating it. I'm not sure how we could measure that though. I feel like it's a positive myself.

Agreed.. But now we have seen the results of having a president without any experience at all and the disastrous results that have followed.

I believe business experience is benefical. They have a better understanding of relationship between management and workers. They understand the need to meet a payroll and how taxes and regulations play into meeting the payroll, plus how hiring is affected. Any business experience is better than having none all. This is true for politicians or just average Americans.

Need the experience of being the senior, in charge executive. That is why governors get elected more. And since all governors have to meet balanced budgets the can usually find their way around a balance sheet. Junior, first term senators seem to struggle with that skill.

What would a "business POTUS" have done differently since 2008?

What would a "business POTUS" have done differently since 2008?

Allowed the marketplace to take care of the car companies and the housing industry.

Would not have passed the Health Care Law.

Allowed the Keystone Pipeline to procede.

Have the Senate to pass a budget.

Allowed Boeing to open its factory in SC.

Focused any 'stimulus' on capital spending to obtain the down-the-road and spin-off effect. Verses using to to pay off government union employees.

Or not done stimulus at all. It was either grossly mismanaged or just corrupt in its function. Either way. It failed badly.

Good point bball:

1000 days the US has been running without a budget. No executive or CEO would run without a budget. Especially for 1000 days. This is an example of gross mismanagement.

"Business experience", "running a state" (i.e. serving as a governor), "non-Beltway insider", "family values"; are all part of the litany of election-time catch phrases. I'm not sure if any of them are accurate predictors of Presidential effectiveness.

The fact that former President George W. Bush's prior corporate experience bordered on the disastrous didn't seem to deter the voters too much. Of course, we see where that got us.

Add to this no subidies for green projects.

How does anyone who says you should have business experience refute (or refudiate if you're Mrs. Palin) the above? It sort of proves what I'm saying.

What did President Reagan's business resume look like? Nice run while he was there. President Clinton's? Nice run while he was there.

I'm certainly no expert on how things work in DC but it sounds like you're saying one person decides if he is going to pass a budget or not. Am I misunderstanding his this process works?

While Bush made his mistakes he was far more business friendly than Obama.

The tax cuts were a good thing, ones that even Obama had to give in and allow to be extended.

Obama couldn't run the a school's consession stand profitably.
