Anyone raise chickens?

Featured Replies

I was wondering if anyone else raised chickens so I thought I would start a thread so we could talk about them.

I have 12 bantam mix that I got the day after they hatched. They are a little over four months now. They are kind of like pets, I go to the pen and play with them when I have the chance on the weekends. Right now it's dark when I leave for work and when I get home. They will eat out of my hand and follow me around the yard like a puppy.

My avatar is one of my young roos

Most of the chickens I see around where I live are fighting chickens. These guys take better care of their chickens than they do themselves. I mean, make them do excercises such as push ups with weights on them. Each one has an individual chicken house to live in. They're well fed and their water is changed daily. I suppose they fight them occasionally in the places where that still occurs, so some of them may pay dearly for their room and board.

Isn't that illegal everywhere?

Yes, in all 50 states.

Doesn't stop people from doing it, though.

I never have, but know of people who do.

The only time I raise a chicken......is to my mouth.

My husband tried to raise chickens last year. The raccoons ate well that month. Epic fail.

I was going to say that, but didn't want to offend the feather fans in the thread.

We have a rule for animals brought to our house whether it's a dog, cat, pig or chicken: If you name it, you have to keep it and you can't eat it!

Not yet, but that's always a possibility

I will be getting some standard sized birds this spring for eggs and meat. What I have now are all small birds. They all stand under a foot tall. Not much meat on one of them.

They don't do that to pamper them. It's to make them more territorial and antisocial toward other fighting cocks. Same concept as keeping a fighting pit bull caged and/or isolated from other dogs.

Is the cockfighting arena still there in Montgomery County? Or has that been torn down?

It's illegal and sometimes there are arrest, but evidently the fines are not stiff enough to stop them.

I've never seen a fight but a teenager showed me one that he had on his phone. They put spurs and razor-like objects on their feet to do as much damage as possible. Very grim ordeal and hard to understand why people would want to watch that.
