I was sitting with a former official of the 9th region, and he also said it was NOT the outside officials call. If you think about it if the outside official (in this case Pouncy) is behind the player in question and he is calling a foul because he deems the player is over the back of the player in front of him there is no way he can tell if there is contact in front of him or if the player went straight up over him to get the rebound. The official under the basket however, can see everything especially if there is contact.

 

I guess we can agree to disagree. I will solicit info from other officials and see how they interpret that call.

 

I am not an official so maybe there are calls that belong to one official or another, but I have always asked myself one question when I see a call by an official further away from contact than another one - Was it a foul/violation? If it is a foul or violation, then it seems to me it shouldn't matter if the official that calls it is at the other end of the floor.

I only saw one former 9th region official last night and he's a HOFer. He may have said that in A particular call that the outside official did not have the best view but I know for a fact he did not say that or imply that the best person to call an over-the-back call is always the official on the baseline.

 

If the play you referenced had the baseline official on the opposite side of the lane than the Campbell kid then it WAS James' call as the C or outside official.

I don't think I said anything about the call "always" being the official on the baseline, I simply said I would assume he would have a better angle and view. The official on the other side probably had the best view of the play...I brought this up earlier only to point out that it was a crucial call in the game because it gave Campbell his 4th foul....The officials DIDN'T cost HC the game. Like I said earlier the Boone Co kids played harder and they won the game.

So basically I can surmise that Holy Cross struggled defending Boone Co doing a lot of fouling which in turn sent the Rebels to the line 34 times. That is a very very good FT shooting %.
