No Holding Hands During the Lord's Prayer

Catholics Priests finding edicts that aren't mentioned anywhere in the bible, imagine that.

To quote the newspaper article

"Only the priest is given the instruction to "extend" his hands. Neither the deacon nor the lay faithful are instructed to do this. No gesture is prescribed for the lay faithful in the Roman Missal ; nor the General Instruction of the Roman Missal , therefore the extending or holding of hands by the faithful should not be performed."

Seems to me the bishop is wanting to instruct the lay faithful when no instruction is given in the new Roman Missal. Surely there are more important issues and concerns that the bishop could champion.

The church really needs to pick and choose its battles. The Bishop was correct in a sense due to there being no direction to do so. However, I'm confused on why he comes to this conclusion when there is no mandate saying yeah or nay? Who cares if the people raise their hands, or a family holds hands. (I still maintain this position) The Cardinals, and apparently the Bishop in this sense, need to get out of the Vatican and back into the streets so that they can get a sense of what real life is like. They live in a Theological bubble, like many college professors that I have encountered.

It's one of those things people just started doing. But the big push to make sure the rubrics are followed more exactly is something I wholeheartedly support. But on the list of problems that can spring up when the rubrics aren't followed... quite frankly, this one doesn't even make the list.

It is one of those things that bothers a surprisingly large number of people, I've learned. Those people tend to lean more traditionalist, but this is one traditionalist who doesn't see the harm in it.

The Bible is but one of the three sources of truth for Catholics. We do not and have never believed that the Bible is the sole source of truth.

Yes, I have a degree in church history. I have several complaints with the Catholic Church, though most of the date back to pre vatican II. I think the church has came a long way in the last 50 years under the leadership of the past two popes who I do think are very good at their job. However, I still believe a lot of Catholic teachings are wrong.

People do what they are comfortable with or not comfortable with. My grandfather would never shake hands during the 'offer the sign peace' after that started in the 70s or 80s. I do not take wine at communion. So some will hold hands, others will not. Its really is driven by what people are comfortable with vs. the direction of bishop or priest.

That's okay. I don't know your denomination, but the chances are pretty good that most Catholics would believe that a lot of your beliefs are wrong. No problem with that, to each his own.

2nd Timothy 3:15:16. This verse speaks that "All Scripture is from God." Can't pick and choose the Bible verses.

A couple of years ago we did a huge thread on the views of the Catholic Church, it was very long, and not sure if we solved anything. But I did learn something and thats not to bash other peoples Religion. All religion is made up for man and man is not perfect, so no Church is perfect.

Nothing may have been solved, but I do honestly think that many of us involved in the discussion grew in our respect and understanding of different facets of Christianity. I noticed a big difference in yourself as I did in myself after all was said and done.

My question is, "who cares?". Why does it matter if people hold hands or not? I've never done, know quite a few that do. Don't see it as an issue.

I also don't drink the wine at Communion, and don't kneel after Communion (was told when making my first Communion by our priest that this wasn't necessary). I don't think that makes me less of a Catholic or a worse person than those that do. :idunno:

Personally I can't stand the idea of people not kneeling after Communion. As long as the blessed sacrament is exposed I feel as though kneeling is appropriate as a sign of reverence especially after receiving the Eucharist. I don't stop kneeling until I see the ciborium placed back in the tabernacle. In fact i really don't like going to parishes around Louisville that encourage standing during communion.

Some seem to forget the actual purpose of Christian faith (and I am pointing the finger at all faiths :D) So................................

Catholics can't hold hands during Lord's Prayer

Baptists can't dance or have a beer

Methodists sprinkle instead of immerse

The Church of Christ believes it has a leg up on everybody else to get to Heaven (I think that's the denomination that believes that???)

Some denominations believe it is a sin to use musical instruments during the service

The Mormons................Actually don't know what they believe.

Everyday I am reminded of why I'm so fiercely non-denominational and proud of it.:ylsuper:

I kneel beforehand, and until time to receive Communion, but once I get back to my pew, I sit with my head bowed in reflection. It's what I was taught to do by the priest, and I don't feel the need to change because those around me kneel.
