George Rogers Clark 54 Covington Catholic 49

Interesting that the coaches son scores almost half the points for the Colonels and he's only a sophomore. Is this a good sign for Colonel fans that a soph transfer scores 20 of the 49? Where would this team be if Listerman was still on the sidelines? Just curious.

Sounds like it was a tight game. Congrats to GRC for the big road win.

For first time in many years it was fun to watch a CovCath team.

Ruthsatz is the real deal, and only going to get better as his teammates also get better.

Fredricks just had a off night.

The only big problem was the lack of height and defending the middle.

Come January this team will be a player in the region.

Ruthsatz - his mental toughness on the court and ability to score at will, resembles another sophomore a little further south on Highway 25.

Nothing interesting about it. He is their best overall player. When the outside shooting comes around (and it will) you will see better balance.

Completely disagree and you're not giving any credit to past years' players who busted their hump. Last year's team was a lot of fun to watch.

I've watched him twice now and what he lacks in speed and quickness he makes up for in knowing how to use the dribble and his body to get the room he needs. Fun to watch.

Congrats to Coach Humphrey and the Cards.

I am just telling you want I saw and relaying the comments from the people I talked to after the game.

As for as not giving credit to past players is not true, many gave there best, but where in a bad situation.

I know many of those players and there parents and they will say the same thing.

For some reason too many people are looking to justify having Coach L removed. Coach L was a valuable asset to CCH. It was time for a change and we've got what appears to be a strong coach. Let's not give the CCH haters ammo by bashing a previous coach.

Kid had to sit for a year or two behind Vinny Z and now is showing he can play. Nice jump hook. GRC did a nice job of running plays for him. He used his size well.

You are right had has had to come off the bench for the Cards. He has started for the BA Hoyas AAU team for the last several years and done well. i knew this would be his year to show everyone what he could do.

Really hate that I missed this game...just got in from Tennessee.

Super great road win for the Cards and in front of the crazies too. Very proud of this young team. Think we are going to be better than most think.

Cardinals survive opener

George Rogers Clark boys basketball coach

Scott Humphrey didn’t know what to expect from his team in the Cardinals’ season opener Tuesday night. However, Humphrey had to feel more at ease after the Cardinals survived with a 54-49 triumph at Covington Catholic.

“I don’t know if you saw two state final teams, but I think (you saw) two teams get better with the environment that we played in, and I was real pleased with our kids’ execution down the stretch,” Humphrey said. “We had zero experience going into the environment that we had and it was a great night for us. We really improved a lot since our last scrimmage.”

The Cardinals broke open a close encounter by scoring eight straight to open the fourth quarter and made five free throws in the final 1:40 to hold off the Colonels and win the season opener for both teams.

“I didn’t see one time where we looked rattled,” Humphrey said. “We just stayed the course.”

Clark trailed 43-41 going into the fourth frame, but grabbed the lead for good with an 8-0 spurt to open the final quarter. The Cardinals made just eight free throws on 21 attempts, but connected on five of those when it counted. Senior Dominic VanCleve swished three of those and made a clutch steal in the closing seconds to preserve the victory.

“I was happy with Dominic making those free throws,” said Humphrey, adding that VanCleve’s steal was a “great play.”

The Cardinals got a big outing from Adam Fatkin, who paced all scorers with 22 points. Fatkin scored 11 of those in the opening half, including six in the second quarter.

“To me he can’t get enough (touches), because he’s the type of kid, when you keep feeding him, he makes good decisions,” Humphrey said. “He’s good right-handed and left-handed, he’s strong and so poised.”

Bopper Stenzel followed Fatkin in double figures with 11. Stenzel connected on a nifty four-point play in the second quarter and gave Clark a steady presence in the backcourt.

Clark connected on four shots from long range, with all of those coming in the first half. Blake Roberts swished two of those in the first eight minutes, while Riley Caudill drained a trey to complete Clark’s scoring in the first quarter. Stenzel also had a 3-pointer in the second quarter.

As for his team’s free-throw woes, Humphrey took “a lot of responsibility” for his team’s outing at the charity stripe against the Colonels, but expects his team to improve as the season progresses.

“With our practice schedule, I don’t have a lot of free-throw time on there right now,” he said. “Because there are so many new faces, I just feel like there’s so much other stuff that we need to get to. As we get (deeper) into the season, we’ll spend more time on it and I feel like we’ll get better as the season goes on.¿We have good shooters, we just need to get in the time and the effort.”

Next game: Friday, 7:30 p.m. vs. Mercer County at Norton Gymnasium.

Clyde, my man, relax. It's all good. No one's trying to hurt old Coach L. Just Cboy's opinion that the game was more enjoyable to watch than previous years. It's an opinion, which I share for some technical / philosophical basketball reasons; but that is only a statement about Coach L if you make it one. I took it simply as a positive statement about the future. Coach L's legacy is what it is. (Btw, I really like the format of my exam papers a lot more this semester than the format of last years exams...(does that read that last year's prof was an idiot?) :)

Cool. I don't agree that everyone shares your viewpoint though, thus, my response. Too many consider "last year's prof " to be an idiot. We need to move past that conversation.
