Newport 35 Dayton 0

Featured Replies

7-0 at halftime. Devils played their tails off. 21-0 after 3 quarters. 28-0 Newport scores on Dayton's second string with 5:00 to go. Thomas Rogg the qb and lb was hurt on first play of the game. That hurt the Devil Offense tonight. It was a dogfight and a game most probably did not expect to be played that tight. The score does not indicate how good of a game it was. Devils made questionable call faking a punt on 30 yard line. However I heard the coaching staff say that the punt was to be a rugby kick and kicked out of bounds. However Newport had 4th and 1 and stood Rice up and he pushed his way into the endzone. Newport 14-0. Dayton was beat up tonight physically. I saw a lotok kids limping off the field. Curious as to Newport's onside kick up 28-0 with 6:00 to go in game. Maybe I'm just old school and that is new thing with young head coaches. Just did not understand it.

I was at the game. Both teams played physical! What I took from the game is the poor class shown by Coach Rice. It was very clear with it 21 to 0,that Dayton subbed ALL their JV guys in at the 6 minute mark due to the game getting chippy. Suprisingly, both teams' players showed class. However, Coach Rice left his varsity in to score again to make it 28 to 0. Then an onside kick, REALLY! It was called because I looked at Coach Rice and he was telling his kicker it was that close. Then Dayton with its JV in goes 3 and out. THEN, Coach Rice runs option with his first team!! I know Rice is upset that he was passed over by Dayton yrs. ago, but the, that coach is now on your sidelines as a coach. Don't punish the kids! This is the third year that he has done something very questionable to Dayton. It is about the kids, however, I hope they get theirs when Holy Cross and NCC just run it up on them. I try not to root for the private schools over public. But, based on tonight and Coach Rice's decisions, my two favorite teams are Dayton and whoever plays Newport!

Was thinking the Dayton offense showed enough last week that they would be able to put some points on the board tonight.

Rogg going out early surely didn't help matters.

I still contend that Dayton is better than billed.

I agree! Sounds like a closer game than the score indicates.

It was a very good game. Rogg got hurt the very first play. It wasn't a hit, he just got rulled up on, on a bootleg play. That made Dayton very one dimensional. With him out, Newport could focus just on the run game. This wasn't a game that Dayton gave away. You have to credit Newport for going out and winning. This was a very, very physical game. in the past under the former regime these kids would have folded. However, Coach Montgomery has instilled toughness into the program. Congrats to Newport, however if they lose out I think Coach Rice gets what he deserves and that is bad for those kids because they play hard.

Recap with no emotions: 7-0 Newport at half and the game is very physical. People of both schools are very suprised, especially with Dayton's QB and best LB on the bench. Both teams exchange punts and then Newport drives to 7 yd line for a 1st and goal. Dayton gets them 4 and 1 and drills #6, 2 yards in the backfield. However, #6 has the determination and leg drive and refuses to be denied and spins out and dives into endzone. 14-0 Newport. From there it is what it is. Dayton's spirit is broke but they are fighting their hearts out. Newport scores on a methodical drive ending with a slip screen into the flats to #9, 21-0. Dayton subs their jv in and Newport's varsity tacks on 2 fourth quarter scores. Final 35-0, Newport. Congrats to Wildcat players and parents. Much class shown by both players and fans from two very proud communities facing hard times.

I was not at the game last night but after reading this thread I had to check into the onside kick because I too agree, that would have been classless.

I was told there was absolutely no intentional onside kick ordered by Coach Rice. The kicker mistakenly kicked the ball very poorly. I was told that it did indeed look like an onside kick but it truly was a miskick by the kicker. Dayton recovered the kick. I was also told that the Dayton faithful shouted some four letter words to Coach Rice after the game letting him know they did not appreciate the kick.

I mean really...The final was 35-0, not 70+ to 0. It just boils down to Dayton not being a very good team. I have no problem with the onside kick. It was Newport's way to ensure their victory. It is ridiculous that when people lose they say the other coach is classless etc. You mean to tell me, that Coach Montgomery wouldn't run a trick play up 21-0 against Bellevue. If he did the same people complaining about the onside kick now, would be talking about how brillant it would be if he did that against Bellevue.

That's the problem with athletes today...they need to grow some thicker skin and realize that the object of the game is to win no matter what (obviously within the rules). So just get over it!!

Good job by Newport and Coach Rice. Like I have said before, Dayton just isn't a very good team right now and will win one more game at best this year.

You have no clue what you are talking about. I agree that the world, especially sports has become soft. That game last night would have been a much different story with a healthy QB. Dayton is on their 3rd QB. Say what you want but when healthy, example last week was the first and only time they were full strength, they are the second best team in Class A in NKY! Newport will get theirs!

Hmmm sounds like this is coming from a very Dayton perspective, and painting a picture that may not be true. I attended this game, and asked the kicker for Newport after the game about the onside kick. He even said it was his fault, coach rice said push kick deep right, and the kicker took it as they wanted an actual onside push kick done. It's still for people to get this upset about something, if they don't know the whole truth.

Now I see a lot of question about Coach Rice on this thread. My biggest question though has to do with WHY would Dayton's coach even pull his starters when it was just 21-0 as people have said. I was at the game, and I remember most of Dayton's 1st team still being in on defense when it was 21 to 0. Maybe Dayton took them out right before Newport scored, since Newport was inside the twenty because Dayton wanted to try whatever they could to keep it just at 21 and hoped if Newport put their 2nd team in that it would happen. Because they knew they was not going to stop them, so they wanted to make theirselves look better by trying to keep it just at 21-0. Just none of this makes sense to sit here and complain about how Newport kept their 1st team in when it was just 21-0 is new to me. I must say this is the first time I have EVER seen a coach just pull his starters before the winning team does, especially when its only 21 to 0. Usually you see the winning team pull their starters, then the team who is losing does. So it's kind of sketchy to why Dayton pulled theirs when they did. Is it because of the reason I stated before? That is the only thing I can think of, because pulling your starters when it's 21-0 with still 6 minutes left is like telling your kids you don't believe in them and your giving up. Thats not a good example to make. So what was the reasoning behind it. A lot of crazy things have happened before in football where it is not impossible to come back still. So why did he pull his starters? That still makes no sense at all, and I have never seen that done before in a game that was just 21-0. I mean you never see even winning teams pull starters with that 6 minutes left when its just 21 to 0. What happened if Newport scored a touchdown to just then at the 6 minute mark to only make it 21-0. Would people expect that team to take their starters out after that for defense the next series? No not at all because that is unheard of. It just really makes no sense at all, and instead of complaining about Coach Rice who is a classy guy he just had to deal with a situation that you never see in football. You all should wonder about that decision of Dayton to pull staters. However from the sound of things on here, I think I already know the answer. It seems like most Dayton folk were more concerned about their image and what the final scored showed. Which might have been what the Dayton coaches were thinking. They wanted Newport's 2nd team in, because they wanted to try to keep it at just 21 to 0 to make things look better. Which is just not a good way to go about things at all, and also its giving up on the kids. 21 to 0 with 6 minutes left is very hard to overcome, but not impossible. No reason to throw in the towel that point, especially no reason to think the other team should stop at that point too. I know this is his first year at Dayton, and he had a great gameplan coming in to this game trying to control the clock, and did a great job with clock management. However that decision just made no sense at all, nobody does that and pulls starters in a game like that at that point. By doing that, it created this whole situation.

Now after that I will like to add I do think Dayton has a decent little team, and they do play hard. Newport was just flat out the better team, and honestly in the first half Newport blew chances to put the game away in the first half. So it's silly for people to get on here and saying what they are. It's a loss for Dayton and a win for Newport no matter what the final score is, so what is the point in this?

(You make think it is silly for me to throw out reasoning's like that, when I don't know for sure what the reason was for Dayton to do that. Which is exactly the point of what is wrong with this thread. People are throwing out accusations about Coach Rice being classless, when these people really don't know. They don't know that he didn't actually call for an onside kick. They don't know for sure that he was trying to run up the score on purpose. Because I mean seriously you never see losing teams take their starters out first especially when its only a 21 to 0 game. These accusations are just silly and just wrong. Just like my theory could be completely wrong too. Which is why their is no need for them on here, and calling people classless when you really don't know for sure what the thinking was. )

Before talking about how Newport needs to get theirs, people need to look at why Dayton did the subbing the way they did. It made no sense at all as I explained in the previous post. Also Using the injury thing is using excuses. Other team's in class A also have had to deal with injuries, so maybe those teams would definitely be the best teams too if fully healthy. I have seen all three river schools in class A play this year, and IMO they are three are very even and its wide open. Dayton very easily could end up being the 2 seed, however Dayton very easily could also end up as the 4 seed. It is that wide open, and no team on here should feel like they are clearly the 2nd best team in that district this year. I know I look forward to seeing how it plays out. Good luck to all the team!

Coach started pulling their starters because things were getting chippy and Dayton needed to stay healthy and not lose anyone else for the next few vital games.
