Breathitt County 68 Newport 12

Featured Replies

Nice game by Breathitt, not looking forward to Somerset visiting in a few weeks.

The score was 41-12 after one quarter. I've never seen anything like it in a high school game. It literally seemed like the teams scored on every other play for a stretch. I don't know much about Newport, but they had no answer for the Bobcat offense in this one. Breathitt County has a good shot at making a deep playoff run. They probably have their best combination of QB and skill players since their last state championship team in 2002.

QB (Trent) is much improved as a passer. More accurate, better touch on the ball. He's also the best runner on the team, which is saying something because the RB (Collins) is no slouch himself. He's a very good runner and also a good receiver out of the backfield. And, they have at least 3 good options at WR in the passing game. They've got room for improvement, so the potential is there to be even better. If they reach that potential, they'll be a challenge for any team in the class, IMO.

Newport looked like a JV team....Breathitt still hasn't played from behind....that will be the true story when they play a decent opponent

Newport is not a bad team, I think you all will see that as the season goes on. That just goes to show how bad Newport played, and just how well Breathitt Played. Breahitt has a heck of a team this year, and should be a deep run. Newport's best player barely played in this game due to an injury, and their other top player hurt his knee after catching a 60 yard touchdown. Also one of Newports linebackers was out for this game. So wouldn't be smart to judge Newport based on this game, because they do have a pretty decent team this year, but were missing players and just never seemed to really get over the bus ride. Add that to the Breathitt being the real deal this year, and that is the type of game you get. I look forward to see how Breathitt does this year, I know I believe they should make a big run in the playoffs.

Breathitt's weak schedule and very weak district will not allow them to be playoff tuff....as for Newport, they will have to improve tremendously to even have a .500 season....no depth at all....only dressed about 30 players vs. Breathitt...

I will put it this way for you. It would be a shame if Newport ended up a below .500 team this year, and I think you will see you were wrong basing your opinion after one game. By the time this season is over, I think you will see that it was actually a nice win by Breathitt. Newport had some injuries, and just never got over the bus ride, while Breathitt came to play and took it to them. Which I also think you will see Breathitt be more playoff "tuff" as you would say than you think they will be, and will make a good run at it.

Hope you are correct.....Good Luck to both squads.....

I wish I could share in your optimism. Newport has its problems. They are decent to good at the skilled positions but struggle up front on both sides of the ball. Newport has played only one good quarter this season (1st against Bellevue). The other 11 qtrs gives no indication this is a good team. I hope we see improvement tonight.
