1. A mistrial does not invoke double jeopardy. No judgment has been rendered in a mistrial.

 

2. This is not a trial about baseball. This is a trial about a man who asked to testify before Congress and then lied under oath. The fact that Clemens is such a high profile person works against him in this case IMO. It is important that people see you can not lie before a Congressional committee and get away with it.

I hate that argument. You either stand for what is right or you don't. If you can get the goods on someone in Congress who lies under oath, go get them too. Clemens lied under oath after insisting to testify. What a selfish, egomaniacal scumbag. He thought he could do whatever he wanted when he took the drugs and he still thought he could do whatever he wanted when he testified. The real justice in this will be if the Hall voters hang him out to dry. That will get him where it hurts more than anything else. That is why he insisted on testifying in the first place... it was all about protecting his image for the Hall voters.

Once that happened, you should be scared to death if they wouldn't have followed up on Clemens lying. That precedent would have been very, very bad for our investing futures.

That's the ironic thing about Clemens. Apparently someone inquired as to whether he would be interested in testifying before Congress. From that point forward, he was the one who insisted he be allowed to testify before Congress. That is where I say his ego and protecting his image got in the way of any rational thought. If he knew he used and would have to lie, all he had to do was say he wsan't interested in testifying and this would have never happened.

I read today that there is not unless Roger's attorney proves there was intent to disobey the order there will be a new trial.

So what ?? My vote is not for them to clean up drugs in baseball. I though that was the commissioners job... My vote is for them to do right by this country. No matter what happens to Clemens with his high priced lawyers he'll be lucky to serve a year. How much did this cost the taxpayers? By the way that price looks like it will go up as well. Now there arguing over to raise the debt ceiling. I love sports but IMO it has no place in government.

Perjury...really...to the congress. There the biggest perjurors in the country. They talk out both sides of there mouth and accomplish what? I'm not against prosecuting perjury in a court of law. On Capital Hill they need to look in the mirror a little more often and maybe they might get a little respect from the common man.

I understand Clemens, McGwire, Sosa and so forth compromised the integrity of the game. Did they break any rules concerning the game of baseball within the Major Leagues? If so, what is that rule? Look at my avatar, I want Pete in the Hall of Fame. He did break the rule and lied about it. Why didn't congress call him in ?

Pete lied to the Commissioner. Big difference from holding your hand up at a Congressional hearing.

The biggest difference is you all hold those in Washington D.C to a lot higher esteem than I do. Clyde what I was trying to say is the congressional hearing IMO was nothing but a bunch of show boating by members of that committee. It had nothing to do with the problems of the USA or the the rest of the world.

It's not a matter of "esteem." It's a matter of law. Roger should have taken the McGwire route and say nothing. Instead, he lied. That broke the law. Simple distinction to me even if you are correct about the committee. However, the showboating part is not a "get out of prosecution free" card.
