Henry County Job Open

Featured Replies

They played in the Bluegrass Championship yesterday in Frankfort. Who coached them?

Does anybody have any details on this?
Springate gone already? They won thier first District Championship on 40 years last season. Maybe Coach Nethery over at Eminence will be interested in the job.

Makes you wonder if Springate has landed a job a little closer to home? I can't imagine he quit coaching altogether - he's been doing it for several years.

Springate did a good job at Henry County.

Timing is interesting, if the job is actually open.

I think Henry County would be a really good job in the eighth region, if they were still in the "A". As it is, it's kind of a tweener job. Too big to be an A school, but not big enough to compete for the overall all regional title very often.

That said, best of luck in their search.

From the Henry County Local & Tommie Kendall:

Todd Gilley was surprised on Monday morning when he opened an e-mail sent from Derek Springate, which the athletic director said was a letter of resignation from Henry County’s two-year head basketball coach.

Springate has decided to back away from the program, effective Monday morning. Assistant coach Rick Schepman hosted practice on Monday, and the Wildcats are in need of a new head coach for this coming school year.

In the e-mail, Springate said he is resigning as the coach and teacher at Henry County because there are “family issues that need to be worked with and taken care of. I tell my kids to keep priorities in line, but I haven’t, and I want to work on those at this time.”

A phone call to Springate was not returned by press time.

“As far as I know, he’s resigning, and we’re going to go from here,” said Gilley, who was surprised by the news. “I will say he did a great job coaching while he was here.”

Springate took over the program from Jason Holland following the 2008-09 season. In his first year in charge, the Wildcats finished 15-13 and lost to Owen County in the opening round of the 31st District tournament.

This past season, the Wildcats finished 17-15, won the district championship and advanced to the semifinals of the 8th Region tournament. The Cats beat Carroll County and Gallatin County to win their first district title in 40 years, dating back to 1971, then beat Martha Layne Collins in the first round of the regional tournament. They lost to Oldham County, 34-32, in the semifinals.

In a turn of events, that was Springate’s last game coaching the Henry County squad.

Gilley said the school is going to move quickly, post the job and see what happens. The school can either hire someone as an interim head coach for one season before reopening the search or find a more permanent replacement.

“We don’t know exactly what we’re going to do now,” Gilley said. “But we do know our kids deserve a quality coach so we’re going to do the best we can.”

They are not currently in the "A".

I know. That's what I posted.

Any front runners for this position?

Any new details on this position?

I heard Jeff Davis from Simon Kenton was interested?

Great coach. I have the highest respect for him.
