Congrats NCC...for my money this school has something special going on athletically. They are good in every sport I can think of boys and girls. Decent academic reputation from what I have heard too. Congrats to Coach Schulkens (sp), AD Rob D, and Principal Noll.

They are almost all 3rd generation kids. If anyone doesn't think that community is one of the main reason that schools have athletic success, they are kidding themselves. It has been a fun year to follow the Breds.

Very impressive. Local paper said something like 95 out of 96 grads going on to higher education and have earned scholarships in the millions!!!

I'm not an ump but my guess is they're instructed to let the play go on and if necessary they can send the runners back once it's determined if the ball was lodged in the tarp.

 

Are you saying that Cain didn't swing when he got hit?

 

Cain clearly did not swing--he was trying to avoid a high, inside pitch. He actually turned away from the the pitcher (towards the ump). Completely botched call by umpire. Oddly enough, NewCath pitcher (Brian Doyle) hit a LC player with a curve ball that would have broken in for a strike. the kid leaned into the pitch and his elbow was in the strike zone when he was hit (I saw this from a position directly behind the plate). Ump awarded him 1B.

I agree with the comment about the umpiring! It looked like Cain POSSIBLY went into the pitch, at least that is what we were thinking were I was sititing, but there is no way that was a swing! I THOUGHT the "tarp play" was the 2nd inning, but heck that 1/2 inning was so long I don't remember, but as was mentioned as soon as he called time he had the ball in his hand seconds later. The Sullivan hit was a foul ball, that was odd, the ump at first just stood there and didn't say if was fair or foul. The plate ump finally stepped in and he did make the correct call! But why did the ump at 3rd feel the need to question the call?

 

Also, what was the deal with the LC 1st base coach and the NCC dugout?

 

NewCath coaches claim that the LC batter threw an elbow at NewCath 1B Luke Schmits while he was running out a ground ball. NewCath coaches said something to the 1B ump and the LC 1B coach started walking towards the NewCath dugout. More than likely--it all happened out of frustration, for at that point in the game, LC was finished, demoralized, etc.

I'm a little late to the party but congrats to the Breds! No doubt they show good plate discipline and they can hit the ball. I am glad they were able to do their thing today. A big challenge though in game 2. As coop said, if Cain is ok, him being hit by the pitch could be a blessing in disguise. IMO they need him on the mound in this next game if they are going to get the W, and he will be able to throw since he only pitched two innings in game 1 ... if he is healthy.
