Ram Reunion Set For August

RACELAND — Calling all Rams: The inaugural Raceland Ram Reunion will take place Aug. 20, just hours before the Rams kick off the 2011 high school season against the East Carter Raiders.

 

It’s a reunion that has been in the planning stages for 10 years, said Raceland Touchdown Club President Marty Johnson.

 

“Me, Coach (Randy) Vanderhoof and Coach (Danny) Mercer have talked about it a long time,” Johnson said. “We decided, why not go for it this year.”

 

The reunion will be at least loosely modeled after the Tomcat Reunion, an annual August get-together of former Ashland players that usually takes place the last Sunday of every August.

 

“We saw what they were able to do with that and thought we could so something similar,” Johnson said.

 

So that’s what they’re doing.

ASHLAND — The interest for Raceland’s inaugural “Ram Reunion” on Aug. 20 is heating up.

 

There’s been enough talk about it that organizers have extended the greeting (and eating) time from 2 to 6 p.m., about 90 minutes before the Rams kick off the 2011 high school football season against the East Carter Raiders.

 

Reunions are always great fun and are sure to stir memories.

 

Former Ram football star Mike Fannin, who graduated in 1980, emailed me after hearing about the reunion and passed along a good story. I asked him if I could share it with readers.

That's great man! I love when teams honor their old players, teams etc. We're honoring our 1st Final 4 team 20 years later this year. Raceland is a great communitty and has always had my respect. We had some knock down drag outs back in the day. Physical and a lot of respect. It was fun.

Thanks for that link Ram. I remember Mike Fannin well. He was a great kid and by this article is a fine man. Another funny story about talking Mike into playing came from asst. football coach Odell Pack. Odell told that Mike loved to hunt and fish and he(Pack) told him thjat if he would come out for football that he would take him hunting on the weekends. I guess that could be called recruiting,lol. Not illegal recruiting bc Fannin was a student/track star at Raceland. Fannin was an excellent reciever, if he caught the ball in the open the he scored. No on was going to catch him. This was on a team that hardly ever threw the ball.

Snyder was a great coach, ground game oriented but he would throw the ball on occaision. Unlike Larry Heck who used the philosophy if you throw the ball then three things could happen and two of them are bad.

:thumb: There was and is mutual respect between Raceland and LC. That goes back to when it was Louisa H.S.. Always hard hitting, tough football.

That is right oldrambler,hit somebody in the mouth and they seem to back away. The hardest hitting team seems to WIN! Most of the time

MEET THE RAMS

For those don't' know, Raceland's scrimmage with Lewis County has been moved to Friday August 12th, 6:30pm at East Carter.

I think Meet The Rams went well. I thought the hitting was pretty good, not too many arm tackles and only a few missed tackles. One of the officials expressed his compliments on only 1 holding penalty and only 2 false starts. This early in the year and with such a young team to have so few mistakes was pretty nice. It was truly fun to watch......of course having the pleasure of viewing it on the field with the coaches made it a little more fun for me.

All in all, a good first showing. You are right about the tackling, no arm tackling, thank God. Great attitude, good blocking, and good tackling. I like it.
