Summer Competition

Featured Replies

I'm just sayin there are more benefits in competing in June at 7 on 7's at colleges then people think. I think it is just some Basketball coaches and football coaches just don't get along and that is not the case at all schools.

I understand, but what if you are a school that competes with these schools and you can go out 4 hours a day andhave the resources, but choose not to because your coach just says "Ah screw it."

Ehh, maybe, as in maybe a percentage of

As for the football coaches and basketball coaches not getting along, I completely agree with you that isn't the case most place. As for 7 on 7, I have my likes and my dislikes for it. There's no doubt in some of it's benefits. Is it a complete difference maker in your season? JMO, but I don't think so.

While everyone else's kids have 4 weeks off at the pool, drinking moutain dews, and just chillin', these schools are getting better.

Yeah they are. So much better. Do you really want to know why these schools are better? Or are you just sold on the fact that practicing 3 extra weeks in June is the difference maker?

Tell ya what, ask Joe Morris, Beatty and Larry French behind closed doors if they think 3 weeks in June was the reason they won state titles last year.

By the way, Mountain Dew should be banned; an age limit to be able to drink that crap, don't you agree?

Ok....... I believe if a school is serious about football like these three schools then yes June will be very beneficial. You can get your whole offense and defense in with the practices in June. So when July comes around your not experimenting ,installing, and etc. You can get right down to business in preparing for season opponents. Call Beatty yourself and ask why he practices for 4 hours a day in June not to mention weights and conditioning. Who knows why he does this? I guess for his health or the kids are bored from cruising up and down the watterson parkway all day in their SUV's, while drinking mountain dews.

Interesting, yes, but I call it an 'honest' take more than anything. For the record, I think June should be off limits to all sports. I just have a hard time believing that June is a huge difference maker as the season progresses. Does January-end of May? Dang right. Does preperation and how a team practices once the season gets here? Dang right. 4 weeks in June? Ehh, going to say no on that one I can promise you that I believe in the hard work and it's rewards as much as anybody on here, but working all the time doesn't mean you are working hard. When it gets down to it, the Jimmy's and Joe's make a bigger difference than some with blinders on fail to realize.

Agreed. For some reason, basketball thinks they pay the bills for athletic budgets across the state, and I'm sure they do at a lot of places, but I know for a fact that football rakes in the cash v.s their winter season counter-parts at many high schools across the state.

Excellent explanation. I agree in the circumstance that no football team gets work in June that it won't make a difference as to who is better later. I thought you were saying that if team X works an extra month more than team Y it wouldn't have a difference. Maybe that is what you're saying as well? I wouldn't agree with that, but I can respect that point of view. :thumb:

If X and Y are on a realtively level playing field in terms of coaches and most importantly, players, then yes that month could make a difference. All is good!

Now June is important. Wow!

That's more of what I'm talking about. I do think that month is important for making the brand of football played in KY much better. Maybe everyone cannot be Trinity or Highlands, but every program in KY could continue to improve. I think that month could help with continuing to put a bigger emphasis on football in KY which would imrpove the product on the field alot. :thumb:

BINGO!

Key word, "could". Look back at what it said, "could make a difference".

Beatty succeeds because he has a program and a school community as a whole that excepts nothing, but excellence in everything they do(which goes back to my whole point of just because you work all the time, doesn't mean that the work is more effective and a better product. Our new house is being built right now, and they could work 12 hour days over a month, everyday, but that doesn't mean the job will be done any better than if they worked 8-9 hour days, 5 days a week for 2 months). Beatty succeeds because he has kids that come from families who are mostly all successful themselves, and will except nothing less of their young men. Beatty is successful because he has every resource imaginable for a high school football program. Beatty is successful because he is at a high school that had already had a football powerhouse 2nd to none, traditionally, in place before his arrival (granted, he has taken them to an even higher level now). Beatty is successful because he has 200 kids in his football program that are completely sold out to the program. Beatty is successful because having those 200+ kids in his program, they are able to Two-Platoon from the freshmen level all the way through varsity, practicing one side of the ball 4 days a week (2+ hrs a day) during the season, while the vast majority of their public school counterparts are only able to do half of that, if that lucky? Beatty is successful because he has a pool of almost 2,000 boys in a school to pull from, allowing (I'm guessing), 75% of the team to participate in their offseason program from January-end of May (June is the real difference maker, though, I forget)Beatty succeeds because he has a staff, in terms of numbers, and qualifications, from top to bottom, that most in public schools will never have the luxury of. Beatty is successful because he has facilities that are 2nd to none in the state. Lastly, he's a pretty dang good coach himself to go along with a couple others on staff that are his 2nd in command.

Shall I go on? Maybe it's just me, but I'd put 3 weeks of practice in June at the bottom of the list as to why Trinity is as good as they are. And, I'm thinking FIJI Purified water is probably the drink of choice for them as they drive around in their SUV's (Chevy/Ford or are you thinking more upper echelon like Acura, BMW or Infinity?)

Bigger emphasis? No question about it. Better products on the field by a lot? I still don't think so, not compared to other states (not meaning to get side-tracked). Kentucky's biggest problem is the lack of overall talent when compared to our southern neighbors (and northern when talking about Ohio), and that gap will never change. Not in my lifetime anyway.

Great thoughts Cats.

Back to the actual subject...the fact that football no longer gets to do team competition in June is the issue, not the relativity of practicing in June. Most, I would say 90%, did compete and practice in June. The fact that we no longer have the OPTION to do so is where the root of the problem rests. It's one thing to choose to own a gun, it's another thing to completely have it taken from you and told you cannot own the gun to begin with...so to speak. I think that is the underlying issue, being told you CANNOT. The removal of choice for one sport, when a double standard is held by other sports. It's all smoke and mirrors folks! As for Trinity...they will just do intersquad stuff anyway and continue as they always have, it's the smaller public schools that will suffer the most, when you can't do intersquad due to numbers or just a lack of actual skill. Just my opinion.

Beatty may have keys to a porsche, but he hasn't recked since being at Trinity. Alot of coaches would with that program. He may have fine facilities and great this and that, but many coaches would go on a run and it would come crashing down. He does a great job of managing and yes he does a have some great assts, BUT he does take advantage of June which many coaches neglect or choose not to take advantage of with practice. Again, not saying ALL schools can compete with them, but there are some that could and they may not choose to do so. Then claim Trinity cheats.

You won't hear the word "cheat" from me.
